  1. I'm afraid I don't know any LLL, midwives, or childbirth class teachers. To be honest, I don't know what an LLL is. :blushing: Jennifer in MI and Mama Lynx, you are wonderful. I will check out those docs. Unfortunately, they are both located pretty far from me, close to a 45 minute drive. DH wants me to find one closer. Anyone else have an idea?
  2. You mean the doctor's name? I'd rather not say. I wouldn't like to give her a bad reputation based only on my experience. I'm sure she has patients who love her, too. But me, I gotta find a new one.
  3. Anyone know how I can find a good pediatrician that is accepting of selective immunization? My current doc was recommended to me by a friend for just that reason. However, I'm finding that the doctor, as well as the nurses, are not at all accepting of my right to refuse any (or all, for that matter) vaccines. Not to mention, I just tried to make a well-visit for my son, and the nurse was unbelievably rude to me on the phone. She was trying to convince me that my insurance would not cover a visit until after his birthday. I had already pulled out my insurance papers, and I'm certain it will cover the visit. When I tried to politely correct her, she got all, well, rude.:glare: This is my second pediatrician, and my oldest is just five. We had to leave the first one when she all but threatened to drop us as patients for refusing an immunization. Help! Where do I find a good one? BTW, if anyone has one to personally recommend, I live in the Detroit area.
  4. I have a friend that is allergic to beef. Whenever I make something that she will be eating that I would usually use ground beef in, I just substitute ground turkey. My family has actually found that, at least in some cases, we end up liking the ground turkey version better. :001_smile:
  5. As some others have said, this sounds exactly like what my migraines are like. I also get them only on one side of my head (usually left), then go from behind my left eye, up to the top of my head, then all the way around and down to the base of my head/top of my neck. I take Imitrex. Before I FINALLY went to the doc to get a dx and med, my migraines would last two or three days. I am also very sensitive to light and sound when I have them. Also, my vision is, well, the best way I can describe it its lopsided. Visiting your family doctor would be a good place to start, in my opinion. Blessings, Bethany
  6. I have no preference on way or the other regarding burial or cremation. I just thought I'd put my two cents in here to encourage others to become organ donors. I am a living donor (my sister has my left kidney), and my husband knows that he should have my other organs donated when I die. I would encourage everyone to discuss their wishes regarding donation with their family, including their children (if they are of appropriate age, of course). In our state, they have an organ donor registry. My sister needs another transplant, and is on dialysis while she waits on the list. Which is five years long, on average. Most people on dialysis die of heart failure. My sister is only 32. Organ donation is a big deal to me. :) I would be forever grateful for someone's family who, in their time of grief, decided to donate the organs of their loved one, which in turn would save my sister's life.
  7. I'm trying to plan my curriculum for next year, but I'm stuck on third grade science. We use a lot of CLE, but their third grade science looks a little dry and hodge-podge. Rod and Staff looks a bit better, which for third grade is 'God's Protected World'. But still, it seems a bit all-over-the-place as far as what we'd study. Is this just what third grade science IS? Anyone have any experience, good or bad, with either the R&S or CLE that I've mentioned? Can anyone recommend anything else that they've enjoyed for third grade science? We're looking for something with a Christian worldview.
  8. My two little boys love to sing a song based on this scripture. My DH and I recently made a point of explaining exactly what it meant. Praise and Bless the Ancient of Days, and thank him for his blessings. Thank you for posting this, what a beautiful reminder that we should bless His name in every situation.
  9. Susan, I meant no offense to the 'bunny-tying' adult population. :001_smile: Well good grief, now I'm just as confused as when I originally posted the question. I guess we'll just keep practicing, and he'll get it sooner or later.
  10. Ok, so over all, I'm getting that maybe I should wait until his fine motor skills develop a little more. I just thought that Kindergarten age is when most children learned to tie their own shoes. I guess I was hoping there was some 'secret' to it that I didn't know. :)
  11. Listen, I realize it's not that complicated. :001_smile: But I can't figure out where to start. He's my oldest, almost 5 1/2, and I figure it's time he learns how. Please, you more experienced parents, tell me what you did. Did you get a book, toy, video, or just go the old-fashioned use-your-sneakers route? I really don't want to teach him the 'make two bunny ears then knot them together' way, since I don't think that's the way most adults tie thier shoes. I want to go the 'make a loop, take the rabbit around the loop, the rabbit comes up the hole, etc.' way. Wow, I hope other people understand what I mean. I sound kinda nutty... :tongue_smilie:
  12. Hey look, I have a friend! Now I've gotta get an avatar...

  13. Ha! This is almost exactly what I was thinking! Dh and I were having a talk with his daughter, 14, this past weekend. I remember my parents talking/lecturing me at her age, and all I would think is 'man, they're old'. I'm 30, my husband is 32. 'Old' depends on who you ask. :001_smile:
  14. Really, I meant no offense. We just happen to disagree. :)

  15. I'm sorry, I did not intend to be confusing. I don't participate in Halloween at all. I've never passed out tracts for Halloween. The situation I described was purely hypothetical. I have no idea if you 'decorate your house in ghosts and witches', either. :001_smile: (We don't attend a 'church' with 'members' in the traditional, American sense.) Either way, I believe this is where we disagree. I do not see Halloween as an 'apparently innocuous and secular' event. I'm very sorry we feel so strongly in opposite directions. Blessings to you and your family. Bethany
  16. No. We do not celebrate Halloween. At all. Well, I just read the posts before me, and I thought I'd add... My husband and I pass out tracts in our everyday lives. Grocery store clerk, bank teller, etc. I don't usually use Chick tracts, they're not really my favorite. However, others I know like to pass them out. I don't see what would be the problem with passing out tracts for Halloween? So, say I put a tract in your kid's bag, and you didn't like it. You'd probably just throw it away. Now, say I had to drive by your house down my street, all decorated with ghosts, witches, and the like. I wouldn't like that, either. Maybe both situations are good opportunities for conversation with our kids? Just my two cents.
  17. But it's the same type of question I was gonna post. :001_smile: So, does anyone have any experience with switching between CLE and A/O lifepac for math? We are currently doing CLE level 200 math, we did CLE level 100 math last year. Both levels 100 and 200 that we've done are the Sunrise version. My son will need 3rd grade math soon. We have had someone offer us the A/O lifepac third grade math. Would this be comparable to CLE's 3rd grade sunrise math, as far as content? Would I be able to switch back to CLE's 4th gade sunrise math with minimal problems? Thanks! Bethany
  18. I know it looks like I said I didn't understand your post... Someone had come and posted after you, and it appeared to be a poorly veiled advertising attempt. I believe the post was removed. YOUR post I understood... :001_smile:
  19. Sorry, either I'm really dense, or your post has nothing to do with second grade math. :001_smile: Anyway, what we've been doing the past few days is moving through the CLE level 200 books at two lessons a day. We skip any review of concepts that I know are concrete for him. It's actually been going smoother than making him trudge through all of one lesson, since this way he doesn't get as bored. We are, of course, working on all sections that introduce a new concept. He just picks them up quickly, so there hasn't been an issue with him learning two or three new things a day. But, now I'm gonna need the level 300 books before I planned. Alas, that is for a different post in 'Want to Buy'...:tongue_smilie: Blessings, Bethany
  20. My doctor gave me a presciption for Imitrex. Don't know if you have tried that route yet, and I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone. I'm not big on taking medications in general. However, my migraines would last for two days straight. I got to the point where, as I told my husband, I would literally feel like I was going crazy. Anyway, the Imitrex works well for me as far as relieving the migraine, however it does have some strange side effects for me. My dh commented that the medicine made me 'reflective', like I'd sit and stare into space, then after a while, I'd ask him some 'deep' question. I do admit that it really feels like it does something strange to my brain, and for that reason, I do not like to take it. It makes me feel...wierd. As far as other things, I have found that alternating ice packs and a heating pad, applied to the back of my head/top of my neck area, sometimes helps. As well as, of course, being in a quite, dark room. However, that sometimes just allows me to concentrate more on how bad my head hurts... Also, not sure of your opinion of this, (so please pardon if you do not agree), but I have found that prayer is very helpful to me personally. I will pray, or ask my husband to pray over me, or even call a friend in our fellowship to pray for me. If/when I do take medication, it is always after prayer. Blessings, Bethany
  21. Ok, so I think I get it... You have to have 50 posts for your rep to someone gives them rep points. But then, what determines what your rep is worth? Is it the number of posts you have, or the amount of rep you have?
  22. I thought I just read recently that the amount of rep you had to have before you could give it went up. It's still all VERY confusing... However, I am sure giving rep MUST be fun, since it's so fun to get. :001_smile:
  23. My 5yo boy told me the other day, after, um, shall we say, spending a good length of time perched atop the toilet seat... 'Ahhh, I got all my p@@ps out, mommy. I feel... smaller. Like I'm three'. I couldn't help it, I started cracking up. He, however, was quite serious. He insisted that he was now smaller. :001_smile:
