  1. Wow! I don't feel like I lied at all. You are correct that many women who have not had children are not virgins. But I felt it was a fine explanation for the time. I gave him the information I felt was appropriate for his age. I plan on very gradually explaining this topic to my kids. My child is 5 years old and has no concept yet of this topic. We were in the van and I was not going to get into a full explanation of the birds and the bees. I use the word mating with my kids although they really don't understand it. I don't think it would have been an appropriate word to use in my explanation to my five year old in the van. Kelly
  2. My dd had a Bratz doll that my mom sent. It was dressed in nice pj's so we let her keep it. I was able to eventually throw it away quietly. My dd knows how I feel about Bratz and my mom does too. I had told her before but she still sent it. She now knows just how much I don't like Bratz. We do have Barbies. My dd and I went through all of our Barbie clothes and picked out what wasn't appropriate and got rid of it. We had a nice lesson in modesty. Many of the newer Barbies aren't as busty as they used to be. Our older Barbies don't fit in the new Barbie clothes. Kelly
  3. I just listened too and didn't hear it. It must be a spelling thing like others have posted about. I'm too old. Kelly
  4. My scrambled eggs turn green when I over cook them. They taste yucky. Kelly
  5. I couldn't leave it alone so I googled it and found the story that explained this. I would never have gotten that from the title. Maybe had I heard her singing it. I'm not sure why parents are so mad. You buy a Britney Spears album for your child and you are bound to end up with problems. Kelly
  6. I did this and I still don't get it. I thought about looking into it more but then again maybe I'll just stay blissfully ignorant.
  7. Hi! I have younger kids in 4-H or the Cloverkid program. In fact, I have taken over as leader of the Clover kids. We are in the homeschool group. Our meetings start off with the older and younger kids together doing an activity. Then we go off to seperate meetings. Last month we did a Thanksgiving craft and learned some history. After that the older and younger kids get together again until the end of the meeting time. Our Clover kids can participate in the county fair and they have other things throughout the year for the Clover kids to do also. I guess it really depends on your state or county. The first Clover kid group we joined was pretty much a waiting room until they could get into 4H. They did a project that lasted about 30 minutes, really didn't socialize and then left. We joined the home school group and have had a different experience. The leader of the group doesn't have much time to devote to both the 4h'rs and the Clover Kids so I'm taking over. I'm really excited and plan to go through the 4 H's and talk about what they mean in our lives, etc... and do activities based on that. Good Luck! Kelly
  8. I haven't thought much about bumper stickers but now that my 7 year old can read I'll have to be ready for those. Kelly
  9. We went to JC Penney this morning right when it opened. There were only a few cars but by the time we got out I was surprised by the number of cars in the lot. It seems as busy as usual everywhere at night. kelly
  10. My 5 year old asked me this question today while we were driving. So, I go into this explanation while trying not to over explain. Know what I mean? When I was done I noticed he seemed confused and he said, "Oh, I thought it was like a new version of a Transformer." I said, "Oh, VERSION. Yeah, version is a type of something. A new version of the Transformers is a new type of transformer." My boy is probably going to be telling his friends now that the new VERSION of the Transformers are girls who haven't had babies. Oopsy. Next time I'll have him clarify before I explain. Kelly
  11. This is just my opinion but I have never liked the look. I don't mind colors that are the same but I really don't like it when its the same shirt. This year for our Christmas picture I wore a red shirt, one of my girls had a white shirt with a red sweater, one girl had a red shirt with a white sweater, my son had a gray sweater and my husband a green shrit. I was trying to find my son a green shirt too. I like the coordinated colors but not the t-shirt thing. I don't even like different colors with the same type of shirt. Kelly
  12. I'm the extrovert married to the introvert. I find it frustrating really. We didn't compromise well. I ended up getting a job at Iowa State University as an usher for sporting events, concerts and plays. That has help temendously. I get to talk to people and be in the noise and lights. I love it. My dh would hate it I think. Kelly
  13. This reminds me of when i was in college. I would get so nervous before my Spanish oral exams. In one class I had an oral exam at midterm and then again during finals. One question he asked was the same each time. He asked which classes i liked and I would answer with a history or geography class saying that we learned about all sorts of countries including Africa. I knew better but I was so nervous. I did it both times and each time he chuckled and said, "I didn't know Africa was a country". I was so embarassed that I did it twice. I wanted to crawl into a hole. I liked the suggestion by another poster of asking which African countries they are going to talk about. Kelly
  14. We are heading out to try this now. What a cool idea! It is 12 degrees here so it might not work. If not, we won't have to wait long for below zero temps. kelly
  15. I microwave a cup of water for 60 seconds and then dunk a tea bag in for a couple of minutes. :leaving: This board has a bunch of tea purists. :001_smile: Kelly
  16. I wouldn't say anything to him at all about walking in on you. Don't tie "the talk" in with this incident. I remember one time hearing my parents and would have been mortified beyond belief if they would have talked to me about thier moment. If you think this will work for your son then go ahead. You should take into account your own child and their personalities. Kelly
  17. My three year old is getting two sketch pads, a box of fat crayons and a box of pipsqueak markers. She loves to draw. Every morning starting at 5:30am she asks if it is mornign time so she can color. We usually give in around 6am and she comes to the living room to draw a picture. Kelly
  18. I don't think you are overracting. Although I agree with another poster who said to let your dh handle it. I know you said he thinks you are overreacting but maybe you can at least convince him to talk with his friend and give him a warning. It would have been one thing to tape it and then show it to his friends but to tape it on someone else's camera where a child could see it is just wrong. I believe this showed very poor judgement and I think he should be warned that if something like this happens again he won't be teaching the kids. Not because I think he'll do something disgusting to a child but for the lack of a good example. About the hotel incident. I know that being loud at 2am doesn't seem like a harmful thing either but it just shows a lack of concern for others. It sounds like this guy only thinks of his own desires and what will make him laugh. Kelly
  19. Have you tried coloring with them? I'm also saying to not force it but they might enjoy coloring with mom. All my kids have enjoyed working on a picture together. You can color separate pictures or color on the same one. We've done it at the table together but i prefer being on the floor with them. Kelly
  20. Thank you both for the resources. I'll check them out. Kelly
  21. I think that depends on your personality. I do most of our school for free and I think its lots of fun. I have many friends who think it wouldn't be fun. We have different personalities. I'm also hs'ing young kids right now so that might make a big difference. Kelly
  22. I don't think my kids are above average intelligence. They may do well in certain subjects and ok in others. When I first started going to homeschool sites I was amazed by how many "gifted" homeschoolers were out there. I haven't seen that on this site so much. I think most kids could do better given the individual attention a child at home gets. I also think some of the kids at home who aren't doing as well would probably be doing worse in PS. We are all different and not everyone is made to be a rocket scientist. We need all sorts of people to make this country run. I heard a quote on the radio one day that has really helped me see the big picture. He said, "When I get to heaven God isn't going to say me 'Well done my well educated servant, or rich servant or beautiful servant.' He's going to say 'Well done my good and faithful servant'." My goal since then is to make sure first and formost my children know and love God. I want them to have a great education but it is secondary to their love for their Creator and Savior. Kelly
  23. My dad told me never get married and never have children. I did both. He told me recently to not have anymore children (his reasoning is that they just ruin your life). I told my dh that we just had to have another one :) He vetoed the suggestion. My mom told me never wear long dresses because I was too short. I only wear long dresses when I wear them. Kelly
  24. We've had it at 60 degrees both day and night since October. You'll find me walking around with a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate all day. Kelly
