  1. Considering she donates 1/3 of her income to charities and such, I'd say she does more than most in her position. I've always liked her, and admired her after she "grew up". She managed to pull through some issues and become an amazing woman who does a lot of good.
  2. Personally, I think a CT scan is excessive, but that's just me. I actually had one of those extra teeth that errupted when I was about 14. I just went to the dentist and they pulled it out at one of my regular cleanings. It really wasn't that big of a deal. They don't even pull wisdom teeth anymore before doing braces, at least not for my dd.
  3. If I was going to do the 4 year cycle again in high school, I would use History Odyssey Ancients and Middle Ages Level 3, then WTM w/ Spievogel for Early Modern & Modern, since Pandia Press apparently has no goals to make HO for those time periods/levels.:glare: I had TOG and loved it, but I just thought it was too much work (prep wise) for one student.
  4. We are using the Grammar part of it only this year for 8th grade, and we really like it.
  5. Stew w/ pear & red onion salad, because a) I needed somthing for in the crockpot, and b) I really wanted to pretend it's fall.
  6. Thanks for your help everybody. I am going to have him up his laps at the gym, and we are signing him up with a swim team, so hopefully some competition, practice, and instruction will get him where he needs to be.
  7. Rec or competitive, can you please tell me what's involved in a typical practice. DD played softball, and that's what we know. DS wants to swim on a team and maybe for HS in a year, so we are trying to prepare him, like we did with DD playing catch, batting, etc... He's had lessons for 6 weeks and can do the breaststroke, freestyle and kind of back stroke. We are working on flip turns (?). We go to the gym everyday and I make him swim 4 laps of each stroke. I was wondering how many laps should he be able to swim. And maybe any other advice. He's a big kid, slightly overweight, but very tall (he's supposed to be 6'3") and has size 13 feet, and he likes to swim so this is something we want to encourage him in doing, but we just aren't sure how.
  8. I advised my dh prior our marriage 12 years ago that I would be keeping my maiden name. At the time he was ok with that. Now he's not. For some reason it's been really bothering him lately, I'm not sure why. I told him he should change his last name to mine since my dad has been more of a father to him than his ever was, but that didn't go over so well. I didn't change my name because my brother and I are it. There are no more MAIDEN NAME's here in our line and my brother will not be having children (not necessarily a bad thing) so I wanted to keep it. Plus, name changes are expensive and I can always think of better things to spend the money on. I still use his last name, but it not legal.

  10. I love this series. The student is given a choice of topics and have specific requirements they have to meet and they are given peremeters to work within, but there is a lot of choice within those options. My B&N carries this series, if you have one close maybe you could go check one out. I just know I am not doing this resource justice.
  11. It happens and it's frustrating. Even at the high school level...
  12. how do you give them choices? Do you comprise a list they can choose from, or do you have another reference to give them. At this point I'm not sure I could send ds in B&N or even over to Amazon and say "choose 6 fiction, 6 nonfiction, and 6 biographies" and end up with some quality choices. Usually I just make a really huge list of books and have him choose from those, but I was just wondering how other people do it.
  13. Hijacking... A)Why do you like these better? and B)How readily availabe are the tests & answer keys?
  14. I'm looking for some new ones. This our favorite right now: vanilla yogurt frozen pineapple frozen mango orange juice 4 packets of tangerine emergence and when I have it Coconut tofu I don't really measure stuff, I just throw it in the blender.
  15. $95 for three cards. After that, I cut up two of the cards and now we only use one for the whole family. That one card also has a limit of 30 books, which at first irritated me, but then I decided that I don't really need more than 30 books out at one time. Also, something our library system did was to put a cap on the total fines. Now, if your fines reach $5 you can't check out new books, order books via inter library loan, or renew books. I thought this was brilliant actually, and this has saved me so much money over the last couple of years.
  16. You just never stood a chance... I am about 60lbs over where I am comfortable being. The reason I am overweight is not because I overeat, binge, eat foods that are high in calories or fat, or am sedentary. I am overweight because I am predisposed to it and I have a thyroid disorder. In order for me to lose weight, it has to become my full time job, and quite frankly, I already have other full time jobs. I just do what I can and try to stay active, but I can't ever exercise or eat less with the intention to lose weight or I'd get discourage and want to hide in a hole.
  17. I have liked and used all of them, but usually Novel Units wins out because of the selection.
  18. Well, softball is a sport that a) there is a strong chance even mediocre players can play college ball, and b) travel/competitive teams are where most colleges recruit from. DD played with two girls who were commited to a Pac 10 team by the time they had entered high school. The scouts are at the tournaments, talking to coaches, watching the girls play from a really early age. However, that doesn't mean that's the only way she can play college ball. My dd didn't start playing competitive until she was 14 even though she'd been playing since she was 7, and was recruited off her high school team (CA doesn't allow hs to play high school sports, but we found a loophole by homeschooling through a charter school). She waited to play competitive for a couple of reasons, the most important being she didn't want to burn out. We saw soo many girls who showed promise and were hyped up when they 9, 10, 11 and played competitive from that age and stopped playing because of injury, pressure, and burnout. If your dd wanted to go on to college and play then you have to be her biggest advocate regardless if she is playing at the local high school or not.
  19. I didn't care for Learn to Write the Novel Way, something about the format... Adventure Novel is just way too much for us, but I did find Advedntures in Fantasy instead. I think I am going to try it this year. I like that it incorporates rubrics for the assignments and brings in a "hands on" approach like map making and a travelogue, etc.
