  1. Thank you, Liza and Ria. I will definitely look into those. I really, really appreciate the input. I never knew how much research practice I was going to get when I decided to homeschool. :001_smile: Thanks so much! Jeannie
  2. Thanks for the input so far. I am bumping this in case someone else would like to comment. jeannie
  3. Hi, I would appreciate it if you all could give me your recommendations for 8th grade science. I prefer old earth creation, or young earth that doesn't push young earth as the one and only true way. Does that make sense? :001_huh: I have been using Abeka and just read on here today that it is young earth. I guess I didn't realize that. If anyone is familiar with the young earth aspect of Abeka, can you please advise me on how much it permeates the middle school science curriculum. We are actually only on chapter 3 of Abeka science 7, because we switched mid year. Thanks for anyone who actually read through this long and convoluted post. I eagerly await your wisdom.:lurk5: Jeannie
  4. It's been a very long time since I was there, but I do remember enjoying the Shakespeare Theatre. (now I'm wondering if it's still there. It's been a loooong time.) The Vietnam Memorial and the Iwo Jima memorial come to mind. The Library of Congress was very interesting. jeannie
  5. I am not deaf, but if you were at my church, I would have learned to sign to communicate with you. Have you approached your pastor or Sunday school teacher to ask if perhaps you could teach a signing class? Or maybe just to let him know that you're feeling a bit ostracized. In my opinion, that's the kind of thing that a pastor should know about. You said you had invited people over during the time you've gone to church there. Before you decide to leave, please spend some time in thoughtful prayer. It may be that God has placed you there to reach out to people and show them how to conquer their fears(?) of people with differences. You may have to be more proactive than you have in the past. I'm probably saying this all wrong, and if so, I apologize. I do know the feeling of being "left out" in church, where you should never feel out of place. I hope that God gives you an answer soon. Jeannie
  6. I had a hard time sitting through that movie because the violence was so upsetting. I don't have a problem with the message or the history, it was just hard to see how horrible humans can be to each other. I can't imagine making small children watch it. I would be throwing a major fit! jeannie
  7. This is the most interesting thread! I've never heard of this before and now I want to research it. :lurk5:
  8. That was cool! I think my whole family would like that. Jeannie
  9. My older dd said that letters don't have colors for her. I asked her about time being a spiral (somebody mentioned that, I think) and she said no, but in her mind timelines are always horizontal and number lines are always vertical. Hmmmm...... My husband says A is blue and they're all going to be blue and why am I asking him weird questions! lol Jeannie
  10. I just asked my dd (8) what color red is. She said "huh?" I said, "Imagine an A in your head and tell me what color it is." She said "red." I laughed and asked her why she said red. She said, "A is always red, just like 8 is purple." Now I have to go read and find out if 8 is supposed to be purple or not. LOL Jeannie
  11. My daughter had this last year with the K12 Virtual Academy. She zoomed through the exercises and doesn't remember a single bit of it. We're doing Vocabulary Vine this year and she seems to be retaining the info. Jeannie
  12. Mine came today as well as my Christian Liberty Press catalog. Ahhhhh.......reading material, at last! jeannie
  13. My dd (8 today!) and I were sitting on the deck the other day. She looked over at me with a very serious face and said..."I wish we could go to church everyday. The stuff they teach us about Jesus just makes Sense!" That's my girl! Jeannie
  14. I don't know what it is, but every "child" star has to do something drastic to show the world that they're "all grown up now." Why? Every time it happens, all I can think of is.....There goes another perfectly decent role model! Jeannie
  15. I have this book. My daughter is doing Lightning Lit, which does have a little grammar in it, but no actual instruction. So I pick out the section in PG that will go along with her LL lesson, and have her read and complete it with LL. I hope that sentence made sense. :) Jeannie
  16. The cut and paste is minimal. Just a two or three little squares that show the flag and usually one other bit of info. Not a lot of crafting at all. Jeannie
  17. We've been using it this year and my daughter is enjoying it immensely. She is in 7th grade. She likes the cutting and pasting because it breaks up the monotony a bit. I discovered it on Rainbow Resource. I believe I saw sample pages there. Jeannie
  18. Congratulations! Both on having a very bright child and on being such a great mom. Trust me when I say, if you put her in ps now, she will most definitely go backward. That is what happened with my older dd and I've been fighting the results for five years! Good luck on your homeschool journey! Jeannie
  19. It has been completely worth the money for me! I have found so many useful items there. Jeannie
  20. Our homeschool groups are very mixed bags. My girls and I enjoy spending time with them all. We all do school differently because we are all different kinds of people. One of the reasons I laugh about all the "socialization" comments. Have you ever met a more varied group of people than a bunch of homeschoolers? Jeannie
  21. My dd (soon to be 8) loves to be outside also. She has discovered a fascination with birds and has asked for binoculars for her upcoming birthday. She also wants a telescope (hello? Grandpa?)! She begs to go to the playground every day. We went to the mall yesterday afternoon (which we do about once every two or three months) and she was mad because she would rather have gone to the playground. Jeannie
  22. I'd be happy to read it! I always wanted to write a book. Just never got off my duff and started one. jeannie
  23. I don't know if you're looking for "designer" jeans or just plain old jeans but......we had good luck in the lady's department at Wal Mart. We bought the petites so they're not too long and they fit my dd very well. She is exactly the way you describe your dd. Poor kid, as if she didn't have very muscular legs anyway, all the jeans seem to be low-rise and she will not wear them. Not that I'd let her, but she just hates how they feel. Good luck! jeannie
