If your child was reading at 3 years old...

Thus far I have not found this to be true. But we are just 1 anecdote. -
If your child was reading at 3 years old...
Korrale replied to jkl's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My son started reading at 2.5 as well. When he turned 3. I let him watch the wwww.readingbear.org slideshows to ensure that he has intuited all the phonics rules. He had. So I just stopped teaching him.p and let him loose. I gave him acess to many books. Many under his reading level, many above. He chooses what he likes. At 4 we started a systematic language arts program. CLE. He is now learning diacritical marks and it has taught him a lot. -
Why is Saxon Math either loved or hated?
Korrale replied to Wind-in-my-hair's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I think when I hear people talking Saxon they are thinking 5/4 and up, write by Hake and Saxon. The early Saxon is an entirely different program written by Nancy Larson. -
He did do military work. But I don't think he gas a team of geniuses. That us what makes the program. The team.

Child's desk and chair recommendations?

Maybe look for taller chairs? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90253535/ -
So I looked up the guy the show is based upon. Impressive. I wouldn't say it is a true story. Just that it was inspired by him. He did do some military contract work. And a lot more! But I don't believe he was in a special Homeland Secureity Task Force. I have now seen 2 episodes and I like the show. It kind of reminds me of Leverage (but they often committed crimes) or several other shows that failed. http://www.scorpioncomputerservices.com/the_founder.html

Days of Our Lives might still be years behind in Australia. The lag was so big that one of the kids was an adult when I moved to the US. I think it is near impossible to catch up as it is showed 5 days a week.

Likewise the people I know in math and engineering fields are huge fans of Saxon Math. -

Two sides of the same coin.... Hated because it is boring, loved because it builds rigor. Some people love math play, more fun stuff, some love solid drilling. Some prefer mastery, some prefer spiral. Some people prefer their children to be guided in math, others prefer that they garner independence. Saxon is written to the student. I don't think Saxon is neither good nor bad. What it really depends on is the parent and the child needing a method that fits their educational philosophy and learning style. Fwiw I don't think that anyone who knows Saxon has ever complained that it was not a solid program. I think it really is. It is just that it was t a good fit. -

I sent something to my folks in Australia. It went to Austria. But they finally got it! We have had packages go south before going west. It is odd how these things happen. -

Magic eraser will work. -
I wonder if NZ is still so far behind. It was like that in Australia when I was a kid. But now my mum in Aust. Is getting the slows I watch in in the US the same week or a week later in most cases. Bones is also based on a true story..... But based so loosely. Rather it is based on a book, based on a true story and the book is not very much like the show.

Wow I was thinking the same thing! Then I saw the description of the show and I thought it was a reality/documentary. I assume it is not. Right?

A sign for your homeschool

My son has a motto... Or more a goal. Or maybe it is an ideal. It hard to be al three things. But trying is the important thing. Usually neatness is the first thing to go out the window. I do my work swiftly, neatly and correctly. I try my best. -

My son got so excited about the math shirts. But he really wants the "carry on and focus on math" pacifier. Oddball.... -
Structuring school to be independent?
Korrale replied to Dmmetler's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
Checklists work for my son. He goes through his checklist of assigned work and writes an astrix on anything he doesn't understand. I go through his work and help him at the end. It helps that the curriculum we use is set up to be used independently. -
I second preschool prep, especially the readers. Those were instrumental in my 2 y.o learning to read. He was also on speech therapy at that time. Reading helped his speech immensely. After he could read preschool prep readers we just kept using the library and picking up early reader books. We went through about 30 a week back in those days. I love that he was able to learnt read snuggled in my lap. I highly recommend that you check out the BrillKids forum. Lots of young readers over there. Something else that helped for his speech was using the free program www.readingbear.org.

My son will be 5 in December and then we will have Christmas. I am getting him a box of trash. Seriously! That is pretty much. what it is. He has a bunch of science books with contraptions and experiments in them. And I never seem to have what he needs on hand. Many of the things are empty bottles, old paper towel tubes, bits of string. So I am going through his books and writing a List of things most commonly used. Of course I won't call it trash. :) A metal detector and some replicas dubloons. A bigger bike, curtesy of my parents. A Q&A kids journal. More snap circuits Lego. -

I run with my son when the weather is good. We all hike or bike on the weekends. And I do work outs at home. -
Maybe it changed recently but it was something like 450 hours for the younger grades.

350K for a house, where should we live?

Las Vegas or southern Utah. Dry, no bugs. -
I highly recommend checking out the forums at brillkids. There are lots of parents give advice on how to adjust programs for little ones.

Lol I don't think it is that easy. I have yet to bump into any homeschoolers in Columbus, even at places like COSI. But I am from a smaller town in Central Ohio and I find that when going to Columbus the over approachability is different. So maybe it is us. I would also check the Columbus Zoo. I believe they used to have zoo days for homeschooling kids.

My son is a high level reader but a very poor speller. In our case we fortify phonics with spelling instruction. If he were a better speller I would probably not even bother with the phonics as long as he could read high level words.

I haven't found anything that we like that spirals like CLE. Could you just cut the lessons in half? Or eliminate things that he doesn't need to practice?
