  4. Hello everyone, I homeschool my two children ages 10 and 12. They both train tennis full time. At the moment my oldest is only doing 3 hours of private lessons a day and fitness. Soon his schedule will be changing to 6-7 hours a day . I was wondering at that point if there is anyone who continues to do all the teaching or do they use a virtual academy so the children can do school on the road or in between training? We have FLVS here in Florida. Thanks everyone :)

  11. Well our last name is Khan and we have been using Khan Academy for years. Even before the so called "Khan Academy". Many private schools are named after last names, so I thought.
  12. If so how is it? Is it a complete grammar program? https://www.queenshomeschooling.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=60_61&products_id=360&zenid=287be62e4064b2b49ad00dcef25ba223

  17. Hi everyone, I have been doing some research into my planing of NEXT years curriculum. The problem I am finding is that what is taught VARIES widely from curriculum to curriculum. For instance I looked at Pandia Press Early Modern and Easy Peasy and they do not teach the same things. How can I find an accurate scope and sequence for American History (all the way through to today) and Science (physical, earth, biology etc) ? Is there a curriculum that TEACHES history with out sugar coating it and how things REALLY happened. I can use either high school or middle school materials. I guess I want to make sure everything is covered. Thanks so much and have a wonderful day. susan khan
  18. I think my daughter would LOVE this. I figured I could add in as motivation to get her other math done. Thanks for posting.
  19. I really enjoy this as well and am using it VERY slow as well :) I do use the library lists the MOST often..
  20. :) I agree. I would let her move around, draw , etc. if she was actually paying attention :) See the problem is that when aloud to do so she can not focus on BOTH. I do not have her just sit there and stair at me . I engage her in the reading and ask questions after only a few questions. I have another son who listens to music while he works and he can do both. I get what you are saying though I would be very unhappy if I had to do this as well :)
  21. Sorry.... I was not sure where to put this as it may mean me needing to change up the curriculum that I am using :)
  22. I tried this out today. I made up a story about horses and told her the story. She remembered almost EVERYTHING including details I would not even imagine she could remember. She LOVES horses. I then read her a paragraph from The Secret Garden. She was clueless to what was going on . She remembered NOTHING. I then talked with her and asked her WHY she could remember one story and not the other. She told me that because she LOVES horses and the other one was boring. I asked her HOW she remembered the horse story and she said that she pretended she was in the story and visualized it. I then asked her to TRY to do the same thing with the Secret Garden. The results were amazing. She re-told the WHOLE paragraph with details and names etc.... Here is the problem and I know it may sound stupid to some. How do I proceed. I can not just teach her with everything horses can I ???? Thank you again
  23. Thank you all ! Here a few quick answers to what is going on. If I read something that interests her like horses she DOES listen and can narrate back the text. She LOVES picture books (I mean the ones you would read to a k-1 grader) When I read lessons that need to be done such as LA or things to go along with science/history she looses interest. I really wanted to teach her with live books and follow the classical model of learning. I am going to try the above suggestions and see if they help in any way. Now that I look more closely at this she LOVES hands on projects and has been asking to look at more books WITH pictures. ELTL has a TON of read aloud assignments and stories. She really likes the dictation (interest lead ONLY) and the grammar parts of the book. It is the stories and poems she has a tough time with. What if she does not like the classics is this a BAD thing? What if you have a child who really does not care to read ?
  24. When I read aloud to my 9 year old she just will not focus on what is being read to her. She will fidget around, play with her fingers, look out the windsow, or anything else but focus on what is being read. I am using ELTL and other books for history and science. I ask her questions after just ONE sentence and she will have no idea what I just read. If I get firm with her and real upset ( I do not want to have to do this) she then will focus a bit better for at least a couple sentences. Is reading aloud to her even worth it if she is not getting it and just a waist of time? Suggestions please.....
