I too have been using this and LOVE it ! We use it more as a check list as well but I have to say this is such a good way to teach as we take the topics and add more or less if need be. I have been spending more than 2 weeks as well as there is SO much that can be covered and kids are keeping an interest in the topics which is so important. This has to be one of the BEST purchases I have made. I chose to buy all of year 1. Maybe by the time I get to year 2 they will have another sale :)

His reading comprehension is amazing. He has always been way ahead with both reading and comprehension. But when he reads a word problem he has this blank stare on his face and says "huh ???"

Thank you ! I will take the above advice. We had been using MM from 2nd grade on and I guess I just did not put as much emphasis on the WORD problems. I will now go back and work through them.

I have a 10 almost 11 year old son. He is working on grade 6 math. The problem is he gets the basic concepts so he can do fractions, ratios, etc. however the problem is when he gets a WORD problem he is totally LOST. I mean he can't figure it out and he gets so stressed out. I am using MM, Math Essentials , and a few other things here and there. I need advice on what or how to teach this to him. Here is just one example: A train travels 165 miles from one town to the next at and average speed of 90 mph. When did the train leave, if it arrives at 1440 hrs (2:40 pm)? Now he can do : speed = distance ------------ time distance = speed x time time= distance ---------- speed or 3 4/5 - 2 1/4 but put them in a word problem and FORGET IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I must also stress I am NOT strong with math at all :(

I am able to individualize. I will do anything I have to as I am only working with my 2 children.

I forgot to mention it takes him a long time to master something. For example, we worked on subtraction of mixed fractions with borrowing for a VERY long time and he is just now getting it. Would this make a difference in spiral or mastery based program?

We tried Khan Academy, he did not like that either. Is there anything that teaches math with real life situations? He says math is boring and it frustrates him ;(

So I have MOST of the curriculum I plan to use figured out. Here is the major bump in the road. We are using MM for both of my kids. The boy who is in GRADE 6 needs more visual/audio/hands on work. He loves the computer, but did not like FLVS grade 6 math virtual school (he just finished first half a month ago). So we NEED something that is online to INCLUDE with MM. Maybe I am totally off here and need to switch math? Any advise is needed . Thanks

I had a daughter in third LAST school year and she DREADED reading. I had her work through this program http://spencerlearning.com/ The results were LIFE changing. Not ONLY did she learn to read but she NOW begs to read!!!!!!!!!!!! She disliked it SO much she would cry :( So I let her look at picture books and continued to READ to her. I did these lessons and worked through the WHOLE program. She is NOW caught up to her brother who is an advanced reader :)
