  1. I have had the redness for a long, long time, with intermittent bouts of pustules.

My mom, an RN, said that it was rosacea. I mentioned it to my pcp during a checkup, and she said no. I ignored it for years, and finally got sick of it this winter and did some research online. The Prosacea gel otc at Wal-Mart and sulfur soap from Amazon have completely cleared it up. I think my problem is skin mites (which everyone has).

  2. Sadly we are rural and I don't have a bike and there is no where close by to ride safely (think no shoulders to the road and 55-65mph traffic.

Swimming would be a disaster. First the only pool is 20+ minutes away at the Y where I would need to continue a membership...........and I can't swim very well. That whole coordinating the arms, legs and breathing thing was never my strong point.

Got a pool membership at a local hotel for a fraction of the cost of a gym membership. I don't swim there. Got some water weights, printed some water aerobics exercises and had them laminated at staples. The hotel is in the same town where my kids have an activity a couple times per week. Either I go while they're busy with the activity, or we all go before or after and they play in the water while I exercise.

Busy roads with no shoulder here, too, but we have good access to a rail trail. I'd like to try couch to 5K but my knees swell and I get shin splints every time I've run since I was a kid. I might try biking on the trail, though. At the annual bike swap in a local city you can find good deals on nice bikes.

  3. We raised them once, not organic, and it cost us $1.80/lb. Organic feed is expensive, and they eat a lot. For the farmer to make a reasonable profit they'd probably need to charge at least $4.50-$5.00/lb.

Love my layers. Roasters were a horrible experience, and I'll never do it again.

  4. Public school, mid to late 1980s:

No syllabus for any class, didn't learn the word until college.

No rubrics until college, novel concept.

There was a student handbook which included a grading scale for the whole school. I think there was one English class where we had a written assignment grading scale.

I remember a course list, but no descriptions. All high schools now have program books with course descriptions available online.

  5. FWIW, there was a period in my life where the JW sisters were a Godsend. We had just moved to a new neighborhood, I had a 15 month old baby, and I hadn't really gotten plugged in anywhere yet. When those ladies appeared on my doorstep, it was so awesome to have someone to talk to who spoke in complete sentences that I practically pulled them inside. They ended up being my first friends in the new neighborhood.

We also get LDS frequently. We live near a temple, so I think the teens practice on us before they go out to do their full missions elsewhere. They're always nice folks, who if we are doing yard work will jump right in (DD also once ended up with a LDS missionary helping her with Latin translations, because when they came to the door and asked if there was anything we could help with, she piped up with "Do you know Latin? This translation is hard!"-turned out he'd been homeschooled.).

I find both the LDS and JWs to be good neighbors. I've never felt beaten up for being the wrong flavor of Christian by them. I can't say that about all Christian groups.

I grew up in a Mennonite area, and my experiences with them is that they are in the world, not of it, not condemning anyone, but always willing to talk and share and help and live. If, over time, you come to believe as they do, they will welcome you-but they won't cut you off or stop being anything but nice and polite regardless. I have seen that same spirit in the LDS and JWs in my current community.

There is a sizable group of homeschooling JWs in my small, rural community, and they are polite but cold and unfriendly. I definitely had the opposite experience from yours when we first moved here. I am acquainted with them through library children's programming, and they would rather pretend not to see you in the grocery store than smile or say hello.

OTOH, a Catholic friend I met through 4-H obviously lives her faith through her warmth and caring for everyone she sees.

  6. I guess I don't understand why this would be obnoxious. Jehovah Witnesses were out in our neighborhood this week. Talked to the nice lady at the door for a moment, said "no thank you" and wished her a nice day. No big deal.

Just say you're not interested and move on. Door to door evangelism may not be time effective but our church has seen converts from the practice over the years.

And, just to be ornery for a moment, this week here on the boards a teen was widely praised for staging a protest over a dress-code but teens sharing their faith is somehow annoying. That seems a bit inconsistent.

How would you feel if I sent teens to your door to convince you to become atheist, or Muslim, or Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster? It's just rude to assume other people haven't chosen their religion after careful consideration.

  7. depends on the chiro. yes, my son's tmj was treated by a chiro. for a lot less, and much faster than a dentist estimated.

My stepmother, too. She couldn't fully close her mouth for 2-3 years, and now she has no trouble.

  8. The guy needs to stop doing that obviously, but the cops need to take into consideration the trauma for the kid of seeing his parent arrested. Most likely for doing something to please the kid, that did not in fact hurt the kid. As a kid I would have thought that was not only scary but also my fault.

Maybe there is more to the story. Why couldn't they just contact CPS to open a case and deal with it outside of the handcuffs / police car? Seems that would be better for the kids if this was the only issue.

If parents don't want their kids to see them getting arrested, they should not do things that will put themselves in that position. That is not the cop's fault.

  9. I haven't shared the old shows with my kids because I have a hard time getting past the casual incidental sexism. Maybe it's because I have all girls, but as a mom I found a lot of them don't age well.

It's a really good opportunity to discuss the women's liberation movement, society's perceptions and expectations of women, and how times have (or have not) changed.

  10. Opening Night of the spring ballet put on by dd's dance school. Ds is participating with backstage stuff. One show tonight, two tomorrow.

So, today... go through the winter/summer switch of dd clothes, prepare bags for consignment, make refreshment for intermission, hair and makeup, and then the big show! At dress rehearsal last night they really looked like they could use one more rehearsal day, so fingers crossed.

  11. I love the Mary Tyler Moore show! I got it on DVD and every single episode opens with the theme song, and I watch the opening Every.Single.Time!

"Who can turn the world on with her smile......."

I also love the old Rhoda shows. I was so bummed at my old job -- when someone in the office would call my phone I would answer "Hello this is Carlton your doorman" but they were all too young to know what I was talking about!!

Yes, we got them on DVD because no one streams them. Dd and I have had some great discussions stemming from plotlines. I'm trying to choose between Rhoda and Bob Newhart for our next series. And should I keep the MTM dvds or sell the set when we're done? Decisions...

  12. The police officer can't make the stupid parent take a safety course, but the judge can. Plus, this gives the idiot a record of child endangerment in case of future episodes that may warrant harsher penalties for multiple offenses... or perhaps there have been past offenses we don't know about. Glad they did something before the kid was injured or killed.
