  1. Getting ready to purchase Spell to Write and Read for a 6th grader who is going to start at Level M, a 3rd grader reading/spelling a year behind and a 2nd grader reading way ahead but spelling at grade level (haven't given the younger 2 the test yet). If you have used SWR, please share what you purchased, whether you would purchase again, and what you wished you had/had not purchased. Don't want to spend more than I have to and there are so many supplemental items.... TIA!
  2. I would like to do some "fun" lit this yeat along with and replacing some or most of the TOG lit. My oldest is a voracious reader (400 pages a day is nothing if he likes it). Thinking maybe adding in kidnapped, Lord of the rings (he is reading fotr as we speak), and 451 farenheit, etc. even though they don't jive with the time period....
  3. Has anyone done the TOG History (core and in depth), geography and arts/activities but used Veritas Literature?
  4. What an awesome thread!!! Thank you SOOOO much for doing this. I am :hurray: for Inquiry in Action & Middle School Chemistry for next year!
  5. 1. Does anyone know the "edits" Memoria Press has done to FMotMA, and if so have any opinions on them? and 2. Has anyone combined the Memoria Press FMotMA workbook and flashcards with TOG year 2?
  6. We used a cornish hen and followed the instructions in SOTW exactly. 2.5 years later our cornish mummy is still perfectly mummified and 100% smell free. One of our favorite projects EVER!
  7. We added them to the end of RS B 2 to 3 times a week after the initial introduction in the book...
  8. What wonderful lists. We have mostly "boy" books here as my husband and I and my 11-year are sci-fi/fantasy nuts but my 7yr old daughter is not. I have never heard of many of these, and simply forgotten about others. Thanks so much for asking this question :)
  9. We adore ccprose's audio books on youtube. We listen Bluetooth to the truck speakers from my iPhone on our way to extracurriculars each week.
  10. As a Botanist (BS) and Forester (MS), I would say that all you need to make exploring flower dissection (and observing super cool leaf structures too) a blast is a hand lens (like the type coin collectors use) and a pair of regular tweezers :) Kids really get into it as well!!!! There are lots of questions they can figure out.... -inferior ovary vs superior ovary (think apple or squash where the flower is on top of the fruit vs. blueberry where it is on the bottom); -is it a female, male or complete flower (both male & female part in the same flower)? -number of sepals -number of petals, -based on what you see do you think it is wind pollinated or animal pollinated, etc. These are all easy things for even very young kids to determine and race one another to figure out.
  11. Zaner Bloser handwriting!!! Finally, a handwriting program everyone in my house doesn't complain about (HWT was a total flop for us :001_huh:)
  12. We used Getting Started with Latin for 4th & 5th grade and LOVED IT!!!! Can't recommend it highly enough. We took two years because we only did it twice a week and did 1 review and 1 new each session. I don't think my 2nd & 3rd grader would be ready for it yet, only because 1 - they are just getting to be strong English readers and 2 - the terminology (diclensions, tense, etc.) I think would cause mental meltdowns. But that's JM2CW :)
  13. We are going to use http://www.middleschoolscience.org :)
  14. We took 2 years to do GSWL. Example of how we did it, Day 101 - Do Lesson 100 independently, Do Lesson 101 listening to the lesson mp3. Day 102 - Do Lesson 101 independently, Do Lesson 102 listening to the lesson mp3 We are moving on to GSWS and Lively Latin next year.
  15. 5th, 2nd & 1st Hits MBTP 9-11 Colonization, The Cay & the Sea Life Units - DS 10 adored these Getting Started with Latin RightStart Math B Zaner Bloser 1 & 2c Zaner Bloser Spelling 2 Reading Eggs - LOVED Explode the Code Right Into Reading - until we unexplicably LOST the book :s Mehs Growing Up Heroic from Duke TIP - it's OK but I wish it gave more guidance for the Mentor, will be finishing next year and we'll see how he does with it SOTW 3 - we LOVED SOTW 1 & 2 and enjoyed the first 1/3 or so of 3, just got kind of boring after Catherine the Great Misses LLATL Blue, Red & Tan - We tried SOOOO hard, but no one liked it and I am not a fan of constant cutting :( MBTP 6-8 - tried several units but it just didn't resonate with my guys MBTP 9-11 - Witch of Blackbird Pond Unit A note about MBTP - we have used MBTP 9-11 for 2 years and many of the units DS LOVED!! But after 2 years he got bored and seemed to get slower and slower so we just dropped it after Christmas this year and did not start the last couple of units. We may pick it up again in the future....
  16. My oldest has done accelerated Math 3, 4, 5 & 6 from EPGY thru JHU CTY and they are awesome!!
  17. Thanks guys. Will look at both. He has loved GSWL and I am hoping that GSWS will be just as good of a basic intro.
  18. Spent 4th and 5th doing Getting Started with Latin. Plan to do Getting Started with Spanish next year but don't want to quit with Latin so that he can read in Latin by high school. Suggestions on where to go next? It's hard to figure out where we would fit in the other curricula...
  19. Book 3 really focuses on colonization, the east and france for the first half. I would go with Book 2.
  20. Thanks for the idea. Especially for your last sentence :) I think we get so caught up in what to do next that we (and by we I mean me) lose sight of that a lot.
