  1. Thank you everyone for all of the suggestions.:)
  2. This is why I think it will work so well for ds. I have looked at a few of the others and AAS keeps standing out. I have looked for it used, but it seems to get snatched up pretty quick once someone lists it.
  3. Finally found where I saw the correct sample. You can see a few of the lessons here. http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=78314#curr
  4. We are in Northern Central Fl. How about you?
  5. I have never seen or used the curriculum but this is what Cathy Duffy's site has to say: "An emphasis on Christian character flows through almost all the lessons." Here is her full review - http://www.cathyduffyreviews.com/history-geography/early-american-history-literature-approach.htm Hopefully someone else can chime in and give you something further.
  6. Now I am on your thread. We are using FLL 1 & 2 this year and ds is really doing well with it. It only takes us 5-10 minutes each day. Unless we are doing some of the copywork, then just a bit longer. I was unsure about how ds would do with it being oral, but he is enjoying it.
  7. Hop on board!! Hopefully we'll here more from some others as well. :)
  8. Thank you Jill. It's nice to hear success stories.
  9. I had originally planned on not doing a formal spelling program until we finished the ETC series. However, over the last week or so, ds6 is starting to ask why things are spelled the way they are. (ex: why c instead of k or vice versa) He is also drawing on his white board and wanting to spell everything he is drawing. I'm thinking this is a good time to harness all this curiosity and start a spelling program. He is just beginning book 3 of ETC. I have looked at AAS and think that maybe he would like this because of the hands-on approach. (we use MUS and it works very well for him) However, he does not bat and eye about workbooks either. So what are some suggestions that would complement ETC? AAS, SWO, others??? Thanks so much!
  10. Staples will print from various media sources. You can even upload it online and send it that way. I have no idea what the cost is. http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/programs/copyandprint/color_and_bw_copies.html
  11. No I have not done this myself yet. I have looked into it, but have not had the need yet. As long as the copyright states that you can make copies for your family, Staples should not have a problem with it. Call them with any questions you may have. Our store is always very helpful. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
  12. If you are happy with Mr. Q's and would like to continue with it you may have another option. Can you copy the files to a CD-Rom or flash drive. If so, you could bring that to Staples and they can make the copies for you. I'm sure other office supply stores do this also. There is also an option to upload the files online right to the store. Then they have them ready for you.
  13. Are you wanting American History in 1 year or more? Bright Ideas Press, the publisher for MOH, also publishes an American History series. All American History. This consists of 2 volumes. Some think that it is dry, but it does seem to cover all topics well and it seems easy to follow. SL uses Joy Hakim's A History of Us for core 100. You could check into that as well. Veritas Press has "Explorers to 1815" and "1815 to Present". Not sure if that would be what you're looking for though.
  14. After we received our copy of MOH 3, I read through it in its entirety and loved it. I love Linda's writing style. Of course we have used volumes 1 and 2 as well. My dd 14 is using it right now and really enjoying it. We are using the entire program. I think it could be used as just a reader if you are not looking for an entire program - activities, quizzes, tests, writing assignments, etc. IMO, all of the extras in the AG helps complete the program. However, I think a lot can be learned from just reading the book as well. As I stated before, her style of writing is very engaging. I think the content might be more mature than the previous volumes. However, Linda does a great job of noting when and where you might want to have a younger child stop reading a section and then begin again. There is a MOH 3 yahoo group that you might be able to learn more from. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MysteryofHistory3/ Enjoy your copy when you receive it. It is beautiful.
  15. Thank you Cindy. We have one of their catalogs. Maybe I will have her look through it and see if anything interests her. Here in Fl, the graduation requirements call for 3 sci, 2 with a lab component. We had planned on doing some sorts of labs with biology. Although dd has adamantly requested nothing to do with dissection, unless it is a plant. But there is so much more to biology than just dissection. I don't think I'll have problems coming up with anything for biology. Chemistry was my challenge. Thanks again!
  16. Here are a few others that I had bookmarked that have not been listed yet. I have not fully explored all of them yet. Hope some can be helpful. http://litplans.com/ http://www.mce.k12tn.net/units/units_with_books.htm http://www.novelguide.com/ http://www.glencoe.com/sec/literature/litlibrary/ http://files.harpercollins.com/OMM/Teaching_Guide_Landing_Page.html http://www.shmoop.com/literature/study-guides/
  17. I am looking into this for my VERY non-science dd. I really like what I see and it looks like it will work well for her. For those that have used this...what have you used for labs to go with it? Do you have any affordable suggestions?:) TIA!!
  18. Do you have a Barnes and Noble near you? Ours carries the new books. Maybe you could go in and compare. Sorry, it's been a while since I looked through the new ones, so I cannot offer you a comparison.
  19. I just came across this thread today. I haven't even had a chance to explore it yet. Saving that for when the kids are in bed so I can focus. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121773&highlight=free+logic+sites
  20. I can't really answer your question, but thought I would let you know you can see samples of MC here. http://tfths.com/samples.php HTH some:)
  21. I will second Total Health by Susan Boe. Here it is at CBD http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=312250#curr. Cathy Duffy has it as one of her Top 100 in her book. We are only on Chapter 3, but really like it so far. Here are a couple of threads on it: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=129487&highlight=Total+Health http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127023&highlight=Total+Health
  22. StephanieZ - I just looked at a sample of SWO at Rainbow Resources, but it didn't give you very much to look at. Is there somewhere else you can get a good look inside the books? Also do you have to start with the first book? Or could we start with a later level next year sometime. Sorry kokotg, not trying to hijack you thread.:)
  23. Were are using ETC right now as well. Ds (1st grade) is just about to start book 3. We will not be using a formal spelling program while doing ETC. I too felt like it would be too repetitive. If you would like to test him on his spelling skills, you could always just use words from each lesson. Use the words that are repeated throughout the lesson. I have not decided which spelling program we will use when we complete ETC. I do not want random lists, but lists grouped according to spelling rules. For this reason I had looked into Spelling Power. However, I am not sure if that method would work for DS. So the search continues.
  24. "Freedom Train: The Story of Harriet Tubman" by Dorothy Sterling. I think this might be the right level. Here it is on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Freedom-Train-Story-Harriet-Tubman/dp/0590436287/ref=pd_sim_b_5 HTH :)
