  1. We recently bought The Crayola Twistable Colored Pencils. They color so much better than the regular colored pencils. (almost like a crayon) And there is no sharpening. Just twist up and go. I think they were $6.00 or $7.00 for a pack of 30 at Walmart. We'll never use the regular pencils again.
  2. Go to the Baldwin project site (below) and scroll down until you see The Story of the Pilgrims by Margaret B. Pumphrey. Here the entire book will be online. It is written for ages 6 - 10. There are also many other American History titles at this site. http://www.mainlesson.com/displaybooksbytitle.php Here are a few sources for Pilgrim coloring pages. Although if you Google "Pilgrim or Mayflower" coloring pages, you will find quite a bit quickly. http://www.apples4theteacher.com/coloring-pages/thanksgiving/pilgrims.html http://www.tlsbooks.com/holidaypages.htm http://fun4thechildren.blogspot.com/2007/11/thanksgiving-coloring-pages-pilgrims.html http://www.free-coloring-pages.com/thanksgiving.html Hope these help. :)
  3. You might want to check into Growing with Grammar. They show samples on their website. The pages do not look overwhelming. It comes with a student manual, workbook and answer key. At the end of each chapter is a review. On each section of the review, there are numbers that correspond to the manual, that way if your child gets stuck, they can refer back to the correct lesson. We have not used the program yet, will begin next week. However, we do like what we see. http://www.growingwithgrammar.com/
  4. Here are a couple more. When I need a study guide for a book I just Google "study guide for.......". You can usually find at least 1 site. http://www.glencoe.com/sec/literature/litlibrary/pdf/johnny_tremain.pdf http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=1470_type=Book_typeId=233 Sorry these are long, I don't know how to do the little link button yet. :tongue_smilie: HTH, Ann-Marie
  5. Karen, Is this the Grammar Land by M.L. Nesbitt? What age would you recommend this for? My dd loves to read. She is 13. I'm all for a story that would reinforce what she is learning. Blessings, Ann-Marie
  6. We just bought Growing with Grammar. Dd has problems with grammar as well. There are 2 components for the student. It comes with a student manual that teaches each topic. Then there is the workbook to accompany it. At the end of each chapter is a review. (there is an answer key book as well) What I really like about the review pages is that there is a number next to each topic, telling the student where they can refer back to the student manual for help. The pages in the manual and the workbook are very user friendly, not overwhelming looking like a lot of other programs. Nice, neat, clean looking pages. Although we have not used the program yet, this looks like it will be the answer for us. You can find samples on their website. Just thought I'd give you one more option to look at. HTH:)
  7. Actually the booklist that is in the back of volume 1 is also in the files of the MOH yahoo group. :D Thanks for clarifying that Heather!:) I had meant there were other lists in the files in addition to the list that is also in the back of the book. It was still too early for me this morning when I typed that out. I am surprised that anything made sense. I have a sick dh and dd with Strep throat. :( Sleep has been hard to come by the last few days.
  8. Is their a Reader list anywhere for MOH 1?? Yes, the back of the book itself will have a list of books that correlate with the lessons. You can also sign up for the MOH yahoo group. There is a wealth of information there. You will find book lists other than what are in the book, a list of movies, timeline figures, notes for the note cards, activities, and ideas for incorporating other curriculum. I know there was a SOTW schedule here as well. Here is the link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MysteryofHistory1/ We have loved MOH. We have just finished volume 2 and will be moving on to volume 3 next year. I also love the way she gives different ideas and projects for 3 different age levels. If you are going to do the mapping activities, there are a couple of atlases that will be good to have. The Rand McNally Historical Atlas of the World & The Student Bible Atlas by Tim Dowley. These are also used with the future volumes. Enjoy your journey through HIStory! God Bless, Ann-Marie
  9. A great book for the human body is My Body by Teacher Created Resources. You can find it at Rainbow Resources among other places. You trace your child on a piece of butcher paper. There are reproducible pages you copy about each organ. It gives you a brief description of the organ and its function. You then color it and glue it on your body that you drew. There is even a placement guide in the beginning of the book. We love it! You can find coloring sheets for animals, bugs and plants just by googling free coloring sheets. There are many free sites available. Another great resource is Janice Van Cleave's Big Book of Play and Find Out Science Projects. (can be found on Amazon) There are some very simple hands-on projects that are fun for kids. (you might be able to find some of her play and find out books at your local library) We have also bought seeds to grow small plants. You can find small garden kits just about everywhere. In fact Target carries some small clay pots that contain the seeds, soil and everything needed. They are in their dollar section. Let them take pictures of the plants as they grow. They can use rulers and record the growth. It would make a great little scrapbook. HTH:) Ann-Marie
  10. LOL! I was just looking at that experiment Ann. That is exactly what I was thinking about too, the "cup assembly" looking like a bucket. I can remember doing that as a kid at the beach. I think a lot of these activities my soon-to-be 6 yr old son will even enjoy. :) Thank you ladies! This has been an encouragement! Blessings, Ann-Marie
  11. Before you order anything, go and look at the actual labs and see if you really, really need x,y, or z or if something around the house could substitute in. Thank you. :) I just had that thought and was doing exactly that. Looking through the experiments so far, we may not need to buy any "special equipment."
  12. Thank you Rita! I took out my lab book and started looking around our house and my dad's shop. It looks like we have found most of the stuff. There are only a few things that I think I will go ahead and order from home science tools. It will take a little work on my part putting the kit together, but for under $20, I'll make the time. :) We are saving every penny we can this year. You can actually see a list of the first and second year supplies on the website. Thanks again for your help! Blessing to you as well:001_smile: Ann-Marie
  13. Can anyone tell me if you use any of the durable equipment supplies from year 1 during year 2? A friend is willing to let us borrow her yr 1 supplies but we needed to check to make sure she wouldn't need any of it first. This is really the only way we would be able to do the full program this year. A new kit is not in the budget right now. :( Thanks for your help :) Ann-Marie
  14. You can go to christianbook.com and search for bible handbooks. There are quite a few. We have Halley's Deluxe Edition and I love it. It has historical info, beautiful pictures, explanation of readings, bible study tools and mentions a couple of ways to read through the bible. There is even a section about how we got the bible. But there are many different handbooks to choose from. In fact, our local Barnes & Noble carries quite a few. Although I have not read it, I have also read great reviews on Adventuring Though the Bible by Ray Stedman. (which you can also see on christianbook)
  15. Yes, Thank you Julie. :) I actually have them all downloaded and ready to print.
  16. I'll throw in another vote for Rainbow Science. We are also doing this over the next 2 years. The Art of Argument is another book you can use for logic. We have not used it personally, but I did get the chance to look at it briefly at convention. I liked this better than Fallacy Detective. The Critical Thinking Company also has workbooks for many subjects. We will be using Word Roots and Analogies this year.
  17. You can also request a free catalog by mail. This will have the individual cores broken down. It will also have all of the extra resources that SL uses and sells as well. Sometimes it's just nice to have a visual in hand, so you can sit down, relax, and look over all that is offered. :)
  18. Wow! What a list! We will also benefit from this. You rock Lori! Great thread Sandy! :001_smile:Ann-Marie
  19. Here is a site that has a list of real stories about animals. It includes a picture of the book, author, description and comments by readers. http://www.hclib.org/pub/bookspace/BooklistAction.cfm?list_num=431 HTH:)
  20. Have you looked at Janice Van Cleave's books? She has one in particular that might work: Big Book of Play and Find Out Science Projects - Easy Activities for Young Children. There are over 50 experiments in this book on physical science, nature, bugs and the human body. The materials used are just simple things around your house: bowl, ruler, paper cup, paper towel, etc. Very easy to use and put together in minutes. You can get a look at the TOC and 2 of the experiments online at Amazon. $13.57. http://www.amazon.com/Janice-VanCleaves-Book-Science-Projects/dp/0787989282/ref=pd_sim_b_12
  21. I hope you are able to remember everything. When I make my wish lists, I copy and paste what I have into a word document. I've had a wish list disappear on me before. Although I don't think it was Rainbow, I think it may have been Amazon. Ever since then, I always make sure I have a back-up copy somewhere. Have a great weekend! :)
  22. Sorry, I do not know the answer to this. There is a SL group on yahoo. Someone there may be able to help you as well. Here's the site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SonlightHomeschool/ HTH
  23. I just had a thought, so I went back to your original post and clicked on the link. When you posted the link, you posted in under your wish list, not just the product. I could tell because it had a number under the "My Wish List" spot. You should be able to use your link and retrieve everything again. HTH :)
