  1. Thank you! This is good to know. I could see her moving through certain lessons much quicker than others. I probably should have started her in Zeta, but I felt like Epsilon would help her with truly understanding math more, so here we are. She's learning a ton from it though and I'm seeing some number sense kicking in finally. She'll be doing pre-algebra by 8th at the very least I plan to have her finish Epsilon before 7th.
  2. Can I hear some reviews from using MUS with high schoolers? My oldest really struggles with math. Spiral is just overwhelming for her. We have finally found our groove with MUS now that she is halfway through 6th grade. Is this enough?? I'm hoping it is because neither of my girls want to switch now. I just want to be sure that we are doing the right thing.
  3. You sound like me. It’s also year 8 or us. I don’t need a box either, but I work from home and it makes my life easier. It helps me not have to plan and helps them know exactly what is expected of them. Win, win for us. Lol!
  4. It’s that time of year! I didn’t see a thread, so I’ll get it started for us. I can’t believe my baby will be in 5th. These years can seem long, but they truly do fly by. Here are our plans! History/Bible/Science/Art/Poetry: Heart of Dakota- She’ll finish up Preparing and move into Creation to Christ (likely near Christmas-we switched mid year). Math: MUS Epsilon (maybe even Zeta depending on how quickly she works through this) Grammar: IEW Fix it Book 2 (maybe EIW 5 as well) Writing: Either Essentials in Writing or an IEW topical book (haven’t decided yet) Literature: Working through HOD DITHOR (either just the booklist or the actual program) PE: Lots of dance ( I think she’ll have about 5-6 hours a week next year as she moves into Pointe Typing: No clue yet but we need to get on this for sure That’s what we have planned so far. We’ll see how much changes come August.
  5. It sounds like it’s exactly what I’m looking for then. I don’t want heavy grammar. I prefer it being learned in the context of learning to write. Thank you! They have both done some grammar. I’m not a fan of super intense grammar, but they’ve done mostly Growing with Grammar over the years. This is my plan! Thanks!
  6. Any reviews on this program? Do you find it to be enough? My girls are in 4th and 6th.
  7. Are there any HOD users here anymore? If so, how long have you used it and what are your thoughts?
  8. I’ve not tried to before. If you private message me your email, I can probably get them for you. 😃
  9. Sound like a plan! We just started CTC for a Jan-Dec year. 🙂 if you use an old guide, there are mom made Notebooking pages on the Facebook group-or there used to be at least. It’s worth a look. 🙂
  10. Do you mean how often they do updates? They just recently started updating some of the guides. They finished updating Bigger Hearts and are working on Preparing Hearts now. Preparing is hoped to be finished updating for the next school year, but one of their sons has chronic health issues, so that is not promised. It is absolutely fine to use as is though. They are updating it to include their own notebooking pages like they did with Bigger. We’ve used their program on and off since K. My girls are doing Creation to Christ right now. I would always err on the side of starting a guide down if torn on placement. The workload really ramps up once you get to Creation to Christ.
  11. Ugh, I’m in denial that I will have a 7th grader in the fall. I’m not ready for it. I’m just hoping that what we will be doing is enough. Math: Math U See Zeta and move into pre-algebra Grammar: Fix-it Grammar Book 2 Composition: Essentials in Writing 7 History/Bible/Science: Heart of Dakota Creation to Christ and move into Resurrection to Reformation (we’ll see how this goes-going back after a few years away and combining with younger sister-she’ll do the extensions) Heart of Dakota Res to Ref Literature:I might just let her really dig into some books this year or we can use HOD DITHOR that I have here to bulk it up some Essentials in Literature 7 Computer: Daddy will teacher her how to work on some things. We’ll need to get to work on typing as well. PE: Roller Derby still more than likely Music: Either a local band or piano (undecided) Am I missing anything? If HOD falls through, we’ll probably just do our own thing for history and go back to finish up chemistry with a few different resources.
  12. it wasn’t just not having new material. I don’t mind her having review. The biggest issue is that this child already has issues with the physical act of writing. The number of longer problems she was doing in TT (despite her knowing them), was visibly causing meltdowns. It was continually being drug out longer and longer each day. She also wasn’t doing anything unsupervised. She is required to sit right next to me while I helped her plod through it. Is wish we could find a magic pill to make her focus, but there just isn’t one. She has pretty severe ADHD, but every med we tried gave her some kind of side effect that was more than we child live with. With all of own things plus dealing with a very tough season of my mom’s health, we just can’t spend two hours a day on math. Either of us have the mental energy to do it right now. We will be setting a timer from here on out with whatever we do. We ended up purchasing MUS Epsilon and Zeta for her. So far she loves it and I think the visuals are going to help a ton. I only wish I would have stayed with Gamma when I bought it last year. 😕
  13. I thought I would update. We actually went for it and bought MUS Epsilon and Zeta. After initially looking through, I believe it will be a great fit for my oldest. In fact, after starting, my 4th grader begged me to get it for her too, so we are now waiting on Delta. The amount of written work is just what she can handle and I think the visuals in Epsilon are amazing! I’m also impressed by the word problem work too.
  14. She for some reason hated how it looked. After thinking through my last post though and mentioning seeing how it works, I think that may be what we need to try. Wait, I remember what I was now. I wanted to do Gamma with her. She proceeded to Google and find out what grade level it was. The thought of doing what she saw as a 3rd grade program in 5th grade ticked her off to no end. She doesn’t like feeling like she is “behind.” She is definitely tricky to teach in general. 🙊
  15. She can now definitely. We watched so many videos about what We were actually doing. We’ve talked about it so many times. She’s finally getting there. There was a disconnect for sure though. Part of it was likely the gazing off into space though. A lot of her mistakes were forgetting to Carey in the addition part of the step. These kinds of things are actually very common for kids with ADHD. Hers is just more to the extreme with math than some. She is gifted In language-off the charts for vocab. Math is her nemesis though.
  16. We did that for a long while. She doesn’t require that as much. I just remind her if it happens now. Her working memory is so poor that it messes with remember procedural things as well. It took legit a year and a half to get multi digit multiplication down. It took 5 minutes for my younger girl. 🤦‍♀️ Homeschooling is not for the faint of heart. 😂
  17. I added more to my post above if that helps any. She struggles with working memory from ADHD. are there any other visual programs that would help? I can use things here, but it’s more likely to get done if it’s already laid out and set up for me.
  18. yeah, I’ve heard varying reviews as well, which is why I’m hesitant to stick with it. She has a cone a long way. It took her a long time to get the procedure for multi digit multiplication down. Thankfully, we are through that stage. She’s great with long division. My focus right now is on fraction and decimal concepts. MUS is very tempting for her since it provides the visual. I’m just not 💯 certain on that yet either. Ideally, I would teach everything on my own from scratch-that’s just not where we are at this juncture. If it helps at all, she pretty solidly places in MUS Zeta. She needs more practice on multiplying and dividing fractions, but we have definitely covered it. I think what bugs her down is her ability to recall things from memory (like basic math facts). She is ADHD and it really affects her working memory. Also, in the middle of a problem, she will totally space out and forget where she was in the problem and leave something out. So I guess multi-step procedures are where she struggles. She’s very smart but her ADHD holds her back horribly. We’ve tried so many meds but she had some odd reactions to them. 😕 I honestly couldn’t tell you a single thing that interests her. 😂
  19. Yes, that’s also why I never suggested using anything at all-only that I thought there might be something better suited for his age. It’s definitely a hard road. I definitely know she has a better handle on her child I’ve seen so many homeschoolers struggle through CLE math (stupid facebook groups) because they thought it was the end all, be all of math curriculum. It’s a gut reaction when reading a post like this to suggest that maybe it isn’t the best fit in this type of instance. We can both have our own opinion though. That’s absolutely fine.
  20. Thankfully. I actually know and understand math quite well. I can pull numbers apart with ease. We actually already do math on the white board together. That helps a ton. Our main issue right now is time. I work from home 30 hours a week and help care for my mom with stage 5 chronic kidney disease She is in kidney failure, so there’s just a lot more behind what’s driving some of my issues with being able to teach everything every single day. It sucks, but it’s where we are. There’s no possibility of them going to school in our district either. It wouldn’t solve the issue anyway. Sigh, I don’t know what we’re going to do honestly. She’s doing grade level in TT, but having to deal with the workload is a whole other beast. My other child easily grasps math and has no issue with workloads-two totally different kids.
  21. Yes, I did read that It does not change my response. Outbursts in 2E kids are a real issue, and sometimes taking certain things out of the picture can help. I would touch CLE math with a 10-foot pole for a 2E kid ever again after doing it with my own child. You don’t have to agree with me at all, but this is my opinion. Obviously, I don’t know the OP’s child personally, but the picture that is painted by her post gives me the impression that there are better programs out there. Her hating it tells me that too.
  22. Yes, I realize that. I have a child with diagnoses as well who is also 2e. Math is not her gifted side though. 🤣 The multiple issues is why I clearly stated looking for something different. I do realize that she was commenting on the curriculum, but it also seemed like she was looking for suggestions. 🤷‍♀️
  23. This is very possible, but obviously there is something going on with the violent outbursts. I would much rather work on fixing that at 8 than stress over CLE. Out of curiosity, what math are you using for your child?
  24. 😂 Ha! Right? I work from home, but staring at the computer screen that long is horrid. Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday is awful. 😂
  25. No, I’m not saying that was the intent. I’m just saying that their program is very incremental and assumes you have already learned it. We don’t current,y use it. I’m only stating a fact of how it’s set up. We don’t use it for many reasons. For the OP, there’s one thing I feel should be said. You have an 8 year old in the 400’s. The workload in that is fairly dreadful and that level is known to be the beast in CLE. Just because your 8 year old is capable of this level of math does not mean it should be expected. There are more developmentally appropriate programs with proper output for that age. Just my 2 cents for the day. Is he your oldest?
