  1. Thanks for all the input. We'll keep plugging away and try to add in more games and maybe flash cards. I bought a dice math game at convention and also math wrap ups. I'm not sure she could handle the wrap ups yet.
  2. She recommended possibly trying out OT again for a short time. We didn't have great luck last time. I may do more research on metronome. I have read up on some of it before. She also recommended counseling for the OCD, and researching meds for the ADHD and OCD. I'm not sure how I feel about meds at this point. Any suggestions for helping her with math. We currently use Singapore. I think she will need more fact practice than it can provide though. Any suggestions? That's one of her main issues with school. She understands the concept - just doesn't retain it Also, she has a hard time recalling when I read to her. It has gotten some better though.
  3. And we have a total of four diagnoses. (Is that the correct plural) My 6 year old has been diagnosed with: ADHD, combined presentation OCD Unspecified Neuro developmental Disorder Autism Spectrum Disorder, level one, without cognitive or language impairment We were pretty much expecting all of it. She wants to retest in two years to see if she still falls on the spectrum. She said the OCD and ADHD could be contributing to the ASD diagnosis or vice versa. Where do we go from here? We are already doing pretty much all she suggested besides meds. Her working memory was in the 13th percentile and her processing speed was in the 7th percentile. Good news though, my daughter who was once severely delayed in language tested in the 91st percentile in language skills!
  4. We are loving Oz so far! I plan to go through all of them. Our current copies are Books of Wonder! I search the Internet for used copies. :) Thanks for all the suggestions!
  5. I haven't read Peter Pan myself, but I assumed it was different. It wouldn't be a first chapter read aloud. We are reading through The Wizard of Oz with great success. I plan to get through quite a bit of the series before doing Pan. I'm working on building our home library though and want good books to fill our shelves with. We have awful libraries here, do I'd prefer to just have our own materials here. :)
  6. My girls are finally into chapter book read alouds, so I am building our library. My youngest loves Peter Pan since visiting Disney, so I want to add this in. Is there a great hard copy we should definitely have on our shelves?
  7. If it were me, I would probably go with option #1. It makes the most sense to me.
  8. Help me. I'm not sure why I'm even looking. I have already bought for next year. Although, I may need something to fill some space when my youngest finishes MFW K. I am thinking P 4/5. If I decided to go with P 4/5 for her, would it be possible to combine my oldest with her or would it be way too easy? My oldest turned 6 back in January. She does have some issues with listening comprehension though. They will probably finish Little Hearts and MFW K around the same time. Am I crazy to be rethinking this? I figured I would continue on with Beyond but now I'm confused. It would be nice to combine in a way. The IG gives me a headache though. I don't like the layout at all. Honestly, I started looking at Sonlight for a book list. Now, I keep looking at all the books. I need to step away from curriculum...
  9. I want to design some lap books for our read alouds. I might be crazy though. I can't find exactly what I want though.
  10. This might mainly be a thread for those who do school or school lite over the summer season. It gets unbearably hot here during the summer, so we normally do school during those times. We're taking our break now while it's nice enough to actually go outside without being knocked down by the humidity. I decided to come up with some summer goals. It helps give me a way to measure how we're doing through the year. Here are my plans: Finish out AAR Level 2 (we have about 12 lessons or so left) Complete Singapore 1A (over halfway through) and continue working on math facts through games READ ALOUDS: This is seriously my biggest goal. I'm compiling a reading list for us. My DD6 still struggles with listening comprehension, so we are going to cuddle and read every day. She just started enjoying being read to in the last year or so. She has come a long way. We have restarted Wizard of Oz a few times and now she is finally getting into it. We will try to read through that series (however long it takes us). We also have a healthy dose of library trips for picture books. Handwriting: DD6 has had handwriting issues since the beginning. We have seen an OT and found that she has low core muscle tone and retained primitive reflexes. Some days we forget to work on our exercises. We plan to buckle down with this everyday and also work on the physical act of writing. I purchased DWN books and she loves those. If anyone has any sites with exercises for low tone, please link me. ;) Possibly start back with Little Hearts in July. We do a co-op and only do our core 3-4 days a week right now. We ended at Unit 23. I am fine with this now because it will give more time for her writing and listening skills to mature. She will only be starting 1st grade, so I am in no rush. We already own all the Beyond materials and it will be here when we are ready to move on. We will of course add in lots of swimming and field trips. School only takes us a couple hours for both kiddos anyway. :) So what are your summer goals? What do you want to accomplish?
  11. Or could we go straight to LOE Essentials? She would be 6 1/2 when we start. She is very much a kinesthetic learner though. She reads very well.
  12. To switch my daughter to LOE Foundations once we finish AAR 2? Does it really include all the spelling, reading, amd handwriting we would need?
  13. We actually aren't scared of the diagnosis at all. We have actually been living with the assumption that she does have ASD. Watching her has made me realize that I have many of the qualities (and did as a child). Whatever is going on is what makes her who she is. I wouldn't trade that for anything. Could you tell me how the diagnosis opened doors?
  14. We have started the process for an evaluation. Her doctor agreed that it would probably be best just to check it all out. We go for our first appointment next Thursday. Thankfully, our insurance covers it all with just a copay!
  15. I do want to get the full picture. I feel like we are so blessed to homeschool because we can help her through these struggles. I want her to be able to hold her own as well though. Our check up is Wednesday. Are NP Evals ever covered by insurance?
  16. Okay, I'll start off by saying I have no clue what kind of advice I'm looking for. Maybe I just need to get this out. Here goes though. My oldest daughter. *Sigh* She's 6 years old. There was a time when we were worried that she was autistic. She did not talk much at all until she was 4. She kind of stopped at 18 months and didn't progress much until around 3 1/2 or 4. At 4, she started talking a lot more. It was kind of like a gate opened up and the words were suddenly there. Even so, her receptive language skills were lacking at that point. If we tried to talk to her, she would either look at us like we were crazy or parrot something back to us that she had heard us say before. We did speech for quite some time. We also did some OT. She could barely hold a crayon/pencil at 4 1/2. She despised going to therapy though and pretty much refused to do much of anything while we were there. We decided to take a break for a bit to see how things went. This happened around the same time we decided that we would homeschool. I started working with her intently every single day. Her writing is probalby on par for her age. I can still see that she struggels sometimes with doing a lot at once, but we just adjust amounts as needed. I quit worrying for a long time. She was progressing so well. I thought that since she was doing so well with schoolwork that everything was absolutely fine. She's reading at around a 2nd-3rd grade level. She catches on so easily. If she sees a word once, she's usually good on it. She doesn't require a ton of repetition. She is close to being done with SM 1A and doing very well. I guess I was measuring everything on school work. I am starting to see my mistakes. Her receptive language skills are sitll behind some but she has made a ton of progress. We model a lot in the home and read a lot. It really has helped. Here's where we are having problems now though. She has SPD. That's what the OT told us at least. She can't stand certain clothes. It will turn into an awful fight. We have been dealing with this for a while. New things keep popping up now though. She seems to be a little on the OCD side. She was washing her hands incessantly recently. So much so that she caused an eczema flare up on her hands. We had to ban the sink unless she went to the bathroom or asked permission. We went to the park earlier this week. She fell in the dirt and completely freaked. She went into panic mode because I wouldn't let her go wash her hands. I brushed her off and told her she would be fine until we left. We ended up having to leave because of how awful it became. I don't know if I am conveying everything through this writing as they really are. We have a check up scheduled this week and I have been thinking of what to say. I just don't know. Any advice or just support would be nice.
  17. Correct. Jay Wile published it through Berean Publishing.
  18. I was going to post about the extensions as well. She beat me to it. :)
  19. If I were choosing it for myself, I think I would choose ECC for the first year and Preparing for the second. I have pondered about this myself actually. I have considered using ECC to fill in a "gap year" after my girls do Bigger (when we get there). Looking at Samples alone, Preparing seems a tad more rigorous. This is not from experience though, so take that with a grain of salt. :)
  20. My 1st grader will do: AAR 3 AAS 2 (maybe 3) HWOT (she needs some serious work on output-always struggled with writing) Possibly FLL 1 (we have it-just not sure if I want to do it just yet-we'll do R&S once she reaches Bigger) We will hold off on any formal writing. I want to work on building up her endurance and getting the handwriting thing down.
  21. This would be a great option. I've thought of doing it myself. U say start with HOD and get a routine down. Then, you can start adding SL books.
  22. Out of those three, I would say HOD is way more open and go. I have used MFW and HOD. The craft activities and having to get library books makes MFW a bit more needing of prep time. With HOD, I have been able to open up e manual and just go. I don't think I have ever come across an activity in the manual that I didn't have supplies on hand before. Most of the time, I don't read ahead in the manual at all.
