  1. I can see how when I purchase the lecture for myself, I can download it...But is there some way to do this for another person? There are some great lectures to share but I don't know how to do it correctly...Just share the file? Thanks for any help, Joan
  2. Still wondering myself....it is such a handy feature and all the newcomers to the boards are missing out and don't know how and why to even tag....
  3. Really happy for you! And it's great to get to see your work :-)
  4. It would be interesting to know what percent of students are doing that many papers...Mine have not always done even one per week...But it does depend on family focus - eg if your family has more of a scientific bent, foreign language bent, etc... As for the terms - I can't say that we did that either...but they did get familiarity in their online English courses.... If you tag your thread " literary analysis ", then click on the tag, you'll find other threads that were so tagged and maybe find more positive answers to your questions.... Here's one thread about it...not with specific answers to your questions, just general "how to" http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/277641-why-is-literary-analysis-important/page-2?hl=%2Bliterature+%2Banalysis+%2Bswb&do=findComment&comment=2785824 HTH, Joan
  5. As a supplement - We've watched the DVD Corporation....many interesting points.... ETA - I was asking questions about Economics in these threads - and while the answers don't always fall under the description you give, some of them might http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/488188-since-the-crisis-have-changes-been-made-in-curriculums/ http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/218376-economics-books-by-nobel-laureates-which-would-you-recommend/ And if you 'tag' your thread with the word 'economics' (just go back to your first post, click edit, and up near the top you'll see the option for tags...) you can just click on the tag and get lots of 'economics' threads... HTH, Joan
  6. Here's a link to the works that the Swiss propose for high schoolers for the end of high school exam (Maturite - in French) In case you don't know French, don't be alarmed - just scroll down the page and you'll see all the different "Listes des oeuvres litteraire" eg for French for Italian they also have lists for German, Spanish, Russian Vol de nuit - by St. Exupery is interesting - about mail carrying planes/pilots in the early days - ...(that's the author of The Little Prince) ETA - since we're reading in French, I'm not sure of the English name in translation - perhaps "night flight"? Joan
  7. Here's an old thread on the subject - lots of good ideas... http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/452370-vegetables-for-breakfast-how-do-you-prepare-them/page-5?do=findComment&comment=5370567 Joan
  8. Thank you for telling us! Sounds good - I'm going to have to try it. I know about disappearing as I have too - just treading IRL... Out of all the recipes and ideas shared - it ends up that my favorite is Roast Broccoli! It turns out to be the easiest and is nice and warm for cold days. Just cut off the flowerets, drip a little oil and salt and pop in the oven...I remember about 5 years ago when a visiting guest asked for broccoli for breakfast - I just wasn't even able to bring myself to buy it! And now here I am eating it myself. But it's so different when roasted vs boiled/steamed... Then comes Kale - they've finally brought it to the market place here, though only have planted small quantities since it's a "new" vegetable :-)....boiled the night before then just sliced up with some nuts on top... Then comes celery - in warmer weather... Then occasionally the other ideas that have been shared... May everyone have healthy holidays! Joan
  9. It's so interesting to read both these threads.... I'd gone to the Basic Seminars as a teen and YA and taken in the materials so substantially that they were part of a subconscious belief system...that was slowly being changed, but I kept having these questions about my own formulaic thinking and couldn't figure it out.... Then at the beginning of October, I had this epiphany when I was reading something about 'true' and 'false' confessions in the Bible...which showed how different people in the Bible had used the exact same words - but the hearts of some were not right...so the confession was worthless. Gothard recommended this confession 'formula' basically and if you didn't constantly do this, you would be in trouble spiritually...(Keeping a clear conscience is one of the seven principles). Finally this jogged my memory and I reexamined IBPL material and found that indeed, this 'fear of failure' had been so ingrained that I didn't even consciously identify it normally....I've just jettisoned that notebook! I was so busy that I wasn't on the boards, but did mention to a WTM friend about my 'discovery' who mentioned that Gothard was discussed on the boards! :-) I should have thought of looking here - but it's also great timing as I see this isn't such an old thread.... I wanted to talk about this part from Part 1 though - it's where I got 'caught' (success is what we want - right?) We do want 'success'...but this can be a trap if it becomes the most important thing, the idea guiding all decisions....The 'god' of Gothard is 'success'...either consciously or subconsciously....and the modus operendi is 'fear' "Every problem in life can be traced to seven non-optional principles" - so then if you don't follow his principles, you'll fail and have continual problems...very scary, especially if living in tenuous circumstances... As people have reiterated in the various ways this is imposed, is so subversive....You get this deep-seated fear that if you do something 'wrong' you'll have problems....So life becomes one of trying to avoid 'problems', which is a natural human tendency anyway - but now elevated unnaturally higher. It's like these tentacles of diseased thought that have infiltrated my brain - getting rid of them is not so easy! But reading of different peoples' experiences is helpful - thank you Faith for starting these threads! Joan
  10. Thank you!! Agreed about - hoping he finds a solution soon! Joan
  11. I quite agree - but a point easily lost over time if not kept up... I still haven't quite figured out how time on the internet seems to 'disappear' so easily. Trying to log my time helps me see where it's going too! Joan
  12. Yes! dd doesn't know anyone like that here.... see below :-) Just today dd said, while studying physics, "I love physics too, Mom!" it makes sense!. It's logical :-) Joan (have been having black screen issues last two days...)
  13. I just thought I'd update about this as well.... So - we started out with the recommended test....on August 27th... I think it is very thorough - but dd never got through it! After three hours, she was exhausted and was still only half way through it....I started wondering how we would do anything else but Algebra I this year... We went back and forth about what to do.... Finally I said that she could review in her old book...so we started going through the chapter reviews orally...It was clear she needed a lot of time... After a couple of days of only doing that for math...she just started doing all the chapter reviews all over again on paper....Finally that got finished last week and she has now started Algebra II... So even though we didn't end up following all the recommendations - they gave me a feeling of a plan all during August so that I didn't have to worry about it :-) So thank you for the support!!! Joan
  14. Hi all who were helping me about this... Just thought I'd report back on this topic now that we're starting Algebra II.... Today dd fairly shouted - "Mom, you didn't tell me there were proofs in Algebra II! It's like seeing 'old friends'!" She was just so happy to find them - and now doesn't have such a negative view... Under breath - I'm so thankful we're using an Algebra II book that involves proofs! (yeah Jane :-)) Happy Joan
  15. I have to report about this :-) I broke the idea gently today. Dd looked incredulous. "People do that?" she asked. I nodded..."On the WTM" :-)... Shortly after she started negotiating for other ways of doing this...For example the 'carrot' approach...I'm still debating... Hi again Brenda...you make writing it out sound easy :-)...I might resort to that for some subjects...I'd tried the predilection suggested by 8fth and just didn't get so far...but i'm trying again content wise this year... I've now printed off week schedules and tables of contents for subjects where there is one book (this is turning out to be very helpful to me to have on hand without dragging out the books every time to see where she is)... but if that doesn't end up working we might try the Google calendar approach just on the computer (still haven't figured out multiple calendars on my iPod if anyone has any suggestions) Funny...I hadn't thought about it so much with ds3 - but he ended up managing quite well - with almost no practice....But he was really good about working overtime on math, etc... Good point about getting it down within 24 h as per regentrude...(so many details to remember - my mind is bulging).. We do a lot of hours too...start 7:30 - end 4:30 with 1 hr lunch and a couple hours off Wed afternoon after 2:30...and now dd is starting to do homework at lunch so that she can finish earlier... Joan
  16. Yoohoo - Other John... Yes, this just happened to me for a thread I'd even posted on - I can't even read my post now... 17. Hoping to have more time to answer the other parts of your mail and the other posts tomorrow as I have to leave in a few minutes... Just to ask about this meanwhile as it's easy - mine have shared their calendars - I can see them in gmail...But how do I get them on the iPod? (possibly my version is too old) Thanks Joan
  18. I didn't know about the free PSAT test either - thanks! Although I have a graduate - I still feel like there is so much I don't know and still learn a lot about a lot of things - though curriculum choices are more decided already...It's the materials where there is not just one book that I'm still needing resources... And then, with no high school level home educators in the near vicinity - I don't have anyone to interact with here...So I'm still very grateful for the WTM boards! Joan
  19. Thanks for the details regentrude :-) I'm going to bring this up when everyone is in a good mood, in a calm manner... Joan
  20. You have a level of organization that is still way beyond my capacities! But I like to hear about it - and you must have very good handwriting. I think my hand would cramp up quickly...But actually, thinking back to the old days when I didn't use a computer much...I did write most things by hand....Doesn't it take you ages? and what makes you choose that instead of typing it up? That Google calendar sounds like a good option if both have hand-held devices....I got a hand me down first generation one several weeks ago and it is much easier to use the Google calendar on that - so I could see it working easily for scheduling. But dd doesn't have one yet...Maybe mine is too old but I haven't figured out how to see other calendars besides my own without the other kids putting in their whole account and passwords....Is that capacity something that comes with later OS's? I know what you mean about "launching them to do their own scheduling" worries... Thanks Brenda, Joan
  21. Just a word of warning - scraping out the pumpkin isn't always easy. So don't wait til the last minute when you're in your party dress if you know what I mean :-) Hope it works for you! (maybe you can find some tips online) Joan
  22. I like that book log part....and maybe for the things where I don't use the TC (I've been busy copying tables of contents today) I could make a list for her to check or date stamp.... Hmmm...emailing a schedule - if dd could type in the 'work done' - she'd probably be happier....Can yours type into the schedule that you send? I have asked what's done - but our days - I should say the time in the day that I remember to ask her is so irregular that it gets irritating to her if it's during another subject... I can commiserate :-) but hopefully regentrude's tough love will work :-) So regentrude - how many times do you let them fill in the time retroactively before resorting to the 'retake'? Joan
  23. She? said to put veggies on top :-) but I like beans more for lunch...but there were others who were putting beans with their veggies for breakfast... Amy - here's a pumpkin soup you serve IN the pumpkin :-) Open the top of the pumpkin Scrape out the flesh inside being careful not to poke a hole in the side. Cook the pumpkin (should be at least 1 kg pumpkin meat) with 2 leeks 2 sticks of celery 2 cl garlic 2 potatoes chicken bouillon S & P butter 1 liter H2O Once cooked - use a plunger mixer to blend If not thick enough, add butter mixed with flour and recook the soup Put it all delicately inside the empty pumpkin which you have meanwhile heated gently in the oven for 10 minutes at 100 degrees Centigrade...(212 F) Hope I translated that right! Joan ETA - this seems like too much of a production for the AM....This morning I managed to roast broccoli in about 10 minutes - not bad time wise...
  24. Admittedly this isn't for beginner level FL's...but it could be reinforcement for a language or help if you are doing a bilingual school - and it could be good prep for going abroad to study...
