  1. I could use some help making a Calculus I decision. For this choice, imagine that tuition, schedules, commute are all not part of the decision. At home DS completed Alg I, Geometry and Alg II. He has taken College Algebra and Trig/Pre-Calc at the local CC as a DE student earning all A s so far. He's a HS Junior and probably going to major in Engineering at the StateU. Though it might not be the same StateU that he could potentially take Calc I & II at, if that matters. Please help me plan his Senior year: 1. Take Calc I at CC this summer and then Calc I again Fall'16 at StateU. Then Calc II spring at StateU during senior year, all as a DE student. So, he would enter StateU freshman year at Calc III 2. Take Calc I this summer, Calc II fall'16, Calc III spring'17 of senior year. All at community college. All Calc need for Engineering major would he completed at CC before freshman year at StateU. 3. Some other option that I'm not thinking of... BTW I'm posting because he and I disagree on the next step.
  2. Something like that happened in our social circle. I just kept offering lots of basic help. I'd call and say I was standing in the grocery store, "did she need bread, milk, etc." I offered carpooling. Our kids were on the same team, so I'd offer to take to hers to practice. If we were cleaning our gutters I'd just call and say, "hey we've got the ladder out can we just stop by." We tried not to stay too long or make her talk too much. We just figured that offering labor was a way of offering love. Thinking back on that time still brings me to tears but I can look back and know that we offered really practical help which just kept the house running until the tears stopped running.
  3. I've searched the forums but haven't found an answer. If your high school student leaves public school midyear, how does your transcript look? Let's just imagine that all of the same subjects taken at public school are then continued at home. Child A is at a school that is on trimesters. Child A is thinking of returning to homeschooling. Does it matter if the student leaves at the end of 1st trimester vs. 2nd trimester? Child B was at a school that has four quarters in a year. Child B left after the first quarter. When I asked the school for a transcript they said there was no transcript to issue because the student did not remain until the end of second quarter. So child B transcript looks like they were completely home schooled during high school.
  4. Inside the (warm) house, I have a switch that controls the outside receptacles. So, I can turn the (cold) outside Christmas lights on from inside the house. Magic, I swear it is!
  5. Both parents mentioned it on different days and when I said 1520 was perfect I was corrected more than once. Both parents have advanced degrees. Anything else I would want to say would take this topic out of the high school boards and over to the chat board.
  6. Thanks! I swear I'm losing my mind! She keeps insisting that's his score and I feel like I've entered some alternate universe!
  7. What is a perfect score on the new PSAT that was given in the fall of 2015? A friend of mine keeps telling me that her 10th grade son scored 1590 and that perfect is 1620. I know that he sat for the test on the second Wed. it was offered. He's at private school if that makes any difference. This is driving me crazy! Could it be a different test? Thanks!
  8. I would also suggest pre-watching it at home ahead of time. So that you and she can pause and discuss the movie when necessary.
  9. I had experience with a (distant) relative that walked off with whatever money/assets were available by getting ailing relatives to sign off. So there was no money left to hire caregivers or pay for funerals etc. I don't have any other advice but just remember that you cannot "out think crazy" Sorry you are in this position.
  10. Well as of this week, I've "used up" all my dental benefits for the year 2016. I was in tears this week. The benefit is $1500 per year. Minus the Jan. cleaning/xrays of a painful tooth. 1500-250=1250. Then I get a root canal 1250-760=510 left in my benefits for the year. So then I need a cap which is costs 1690. So 1690 minus rest of my benefits 510 is a $1180 balance. And the office asks if I want that appointment in two weeks? Heck ya, I can come up with 1180 in two weeks. Oh and BTW you'r next 6mos cleaning won't be covered or anything else that could happen in 2016! I grew up with lousy dental care, so much of what is being done now is directly related to that. We've always paid in full at each medical visit for us or the kiddos but in the last year we've just been shocked at the bills. BTW We're a healthy family with no Rx. The amount we spent OOP in 2015 is the most we've ever paid. I'm struggling to figure out how to budget for 2016. In reality, I'm trying to figure out what to cut out of the 2016 budget. I always think we live frugally but I just don't know anymore.
  11. Does anyone have a child (or spouse) that waited to get a trade until after high school? If so would you be wiling to talk a bit about the experience and the tuition? I know that licenses vary by state but I'm especially interested in trades that required a license. In my state that would be electricians, plumbers, HVAC, etc. I am trying to think through keeping a teen home for a traditional education and then moving into trade school after hs graduation. The problem I'm encountering is that it seems that community colleges don't seem to teach the trades, private-for-profit trade schools are expensive and if you don't get in to the voke tech hs in 9th grade there is a waiting list. Ideas for on-line or outsourcing during high school are also very welcome. Thanks!
  12. My "mathy" kid did at home: 9th Algebra I, 10th Algebra II, 11th Geometry all using Life of Fred. In addition, he started taking classes at the local CC during 10th grade. However, he did not take math at the CC until 11th grade. During 11th grade he took: Modern College Math, then College Algebra, then PreCalc with Trig. He changed up the order of the high school math (at home) because he realized he needed AlgII to pass the placement test at the CC in the math department. Placement test examples were on the CC website. I would encourage you to look at the course listings again. Regular math class usually start with MTH100, MTH125, etc. The remedial math classes often start with a zero. I don't know how a remedial class would look on a transcript (perhaps someone else will post that information) Also, if cost is a factor, you may want to look at other options beside the CC until he needs the higher maths. We're paying about $500 a class plus math books tend to be around $200 each because the books have a one time, online access code for the publishers website. So used books are useless. I would also encourage you to ask other homeschoolers in your area. They might know the local CC at bit better and can make other suggestions.
  13. This breaks my heart. This could've been me. My parents always waited till April 15 to do their taxes. And did other things to subvert my attempts at earning a degree. I went to a state school by working/paying my way through. College gave me such a boost up and out of the life I came from. I worry about kids who want to do something with their lives and are now stuck waiting till they turn 24.
  14. State University, tuition & fees, one year is $12,500 (not books, or dorms, or food etc.)
  15. In addition to everything that's been listed above, I took my baby to a chiropractor that works with children. He adjusted the baby with a goal to help move along the stool. And boy did that work! Also, the phlebotomist used a warm compress before the heel stick. Good luck!
  16. Not much to contribute except my own personal experience. After college, I used my day job for living expenses and my weekend job to pay back student loans. I was hired in part, because I didn't know the names/faces of the local drug dealers. One shift a guy came in with a gun drawn looking for another guy. Someone yelled for them to "take it outside" and they did. Very few of the customers even flinched. I sat on the floor. I was over 21 and no one pressured/offered/asked. I pretty quickly figured out why I had been hired.
  17. I've got a quesiton about the "no penalty" for guessing. So if a student answers only 5 quesions in one section and gets all 5 correct, they get a perfect score? Does the score somehow take into account the questions left blank? Thanks
  18. Ds took the Accuplacer test at the end of Freshman year. He had just finished Algebra I at home. He scored high enough on the test to take humanities classes at the CC but not high enough to take the math classes. So, Sophomore year he did take humanities at the local CC and he studied Algebra II at home that year. In his opinion, the Accuplacer has more Algebra than Geometry. So he retook the Accuplacer at the end of Sophomore year after finishing Algebra II . He scored high enough to be able to take math at the CC during Junior year. There is a rule about retaking the Accuplacer test so you probably want to ask at your local CC. For ds, it worked in his advantage because he then knew what he needed to study during Sophomore year to pass it on the second try.
  19. I did invite her to my home. There was a long involved health related story about how she couldn't drive 30 m. She's never done anything offensive so there hasn't been a reason to cut off contact. She has lived out of state for 20 years. I'm just very caution with her because she's very involved with my mom.
  20. My dh had that as scheduled day off. I mentioned that to sis so it would get back to my mom. Mom is generally afraid of my dh. Im not on facebook because of my extended family. Im ok with a short visit with my kids present because sis isnt interested in them. I agree this is probably a photo opp. Thanks
  21. I would appreciate some advice. My sister (golden child) finally decided to have a child at 40. She's coming into town and wants my kids to hang out with the baby at a park one afternoon. She didn't mention bringing my narcissist mother who I haven't had contact with in about 3 years. I talk to my sister about once a year and haven't seen her in a couple of years. Since she's had the baby, she calls more. We've spoken six times in six months. Mostly she does all the talking and never asked about me, dh, or kiddos. My kids don't really remember her. Anyway, she lives for facebook. I'm not too keen on her taking pictures of my kids with her baby and plastering them all over facebook for my mom's benefit or my sister's fantasy world. So do I say no pictures please? Do I ask her not to use my kids names on her account? Or do I just suck it up figuring I won't see her again for a while?
  22. I have a teen that is having trouble narrowing down a career path. I remember filling in a bubble sheet in my high school guidance office that helped narrow down career choices. Could anyone suggest where to start? I don't expect him to have his entire life figured out right now. I'm just trying to help him find a place to start. He's having trouble expressing what he likes/doesn't like about school and/or work. Thanks for the suggestions.
  23. We're looking more to see the sights than to have a real camping experience. I was thinking camping would be cheaper than a hotel. I appreciate the advice.
  24. I've been looking at campgrounds close to Washington D.C. The closest one I've found is in College Park, MD. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
