  1. You should be able to find his name on ship records and many times get a copy of the actual passenger list. I would also check out the library. When I start on a new family I always try to get the "big picture" by checking out general genealogy sites on those locations. There are also books that focus on different countries and describe basic immigration patterns and such.
  2. The honorable thing would be to go and stand in front of the news media alone. He should be thinking first of his wife and letting her process everything and not have to face the cameras. These public confessions make wives look like political accessories. Let the men stand up and face the music alone. Let them take the full hit of the consequences publically and let their wives deal with it privately. I think it is adding insult to injury that those who counsel with these politicians are willing to see the wives as an object. They want people to focus on the wife, offer sympathy, and forget about the jerk who is actually speaking.
  3. My kids are around other kids all the time-even families who tend to be sick always. For awhile there we were exposed to three families who had sickness go through their family. One of my kids attends school where many kids were sent home sick. We don't use anti bacterial soap and they often forget to wash their hands. :o I tend to be in the camp that the healthiest people have been exposed to dirt.:D However, we do use apple cider vinegar & honey to treat sore throats & anytime we feel start feeling under the weather- that means instead of monthly visits to the doctor we have not been to a doctor in three years. For my children we use Herbs for Kids and that works miracles here. Upset stomach, sore throats, coughs barely last an hour. Except for the occassional headache when I take OTC (when white willow might take too long to work) everyone in our family uses herbs. A few weeks ago we seemed to be low on energy and I think we were fighting off something but after a few days our energy came back and no other symptoms occurred.:)
  4. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/SuperModels/CouldWeReallyRunOutOfFood.aspx I tend to purchase bulk food and prices have increased a lot the last year. According to this article it looks like there will be even more increases.
  5. Baking soda here too. We just put it in a salt shaker and just pat it on. Once in a great while hormones seem to sneek up on me and I need to use Apple Cider Vinegar (on a cottonball) let it dry and then use the baking soda. ACV should not be used daily because it will irritate the skin. Also the first time you stop using deodorant your underarms start to "breathe" again and you may smell worse for a few days. (But the ACV will prevent that)
  6. We have used pine for 3 years with no problems and most sites say it is okay if it is kiln-dry. I haven't seen any data to show that pine is bad for them, we did a lot of research when we bought the pigs and have never heard of a negative reaction even on the most die-hard guinea pig sites. We actually go to a vet who specializes in smaller animals and they have no problems with it. The lettuce we use is actually a mix of greens and we use parsley.
  7. Besides ancestry.com and familysearch.org I like rootsweb.com . They have great mailing lists and I have found when I hit a wall that surname or location sites usually give me the best people to contact. Also at some point you need to see actual records or a copy of them. Most records are NOT online. Most genealogy societies at some point want you to prove with actual documents that you are connected to their group if they have specific focus. In this case your best bet is to visit a genealogical library or the Family History Center (which are in Mormon churches). Most of these libraries have their catalog online so you can see what is there before you go. Good luck!
  8. We bought our grids from Target I believe. We bought an extra set and used zip ties to make a portable play area to take outside. We bought the coroplast from a local sign shop for under $30.00. When we went to order it they even knew what we were looking for and had many colors to choose from. For bedding we buy pinechips but we go to a feed store and buy a huge bag for under $5.00. Our cage is 2.5 ft by 8ft. and we get at least 3 changes if not more. We also picked up food pellets and hay there and it last forever and MUCH cheaper than buying it in little bits at the petstore. We store the extra in our basement and have had no problems with bugs or such. We did have a loft at one point and you need a piece of wood or something to support the bottom but other than that we used zip ties to hold everything together and a piece of carpet for the flooring. We give them fresh food twice a day- usually bell peppers and lettuce. Two more sites are: http://www.cavycages.com http://www.guinealynx.com HTH, Gigi
  9. Well we only watch college football :p....but our favorite snack is one can of no bean chili w/ a stick of cream cheese blended/warmed together. It is soooo good and we eat it with the frito's dippers. It is one of my favorite "munchies". We now have to triple the recipe since everyone here loves it.
  10. My first son received every pin...it was easy we just worked through it and he was willing to do it. My second son is now in Webelos and he hasn't earned anything in 6 months  because he could care less. My new goal for him is for him to earn the badge and the Arrow of Light. I think that is doable. He has great den leaders but with his ADHD he barely attends the meetings because the group dynamic is too much for him. My next son will probably be done in 6 months with no help from me. :D So stop---this is for your son not the other parents and if he is happy then you have done your job as a supportive parent. :)
  11. We always use Apple Cider vinegar. I use 2 tsp in about a cup of water. I take it every 3 hours and usually 2 or 3 "doses" and my sore throat is gone. We also follow that up with a raw honey and it helps to soothe- plus it just tastes good. :-)
  12. I would do it. I haven't camped with my kids but we have traveled when my husband had to work and most of our field trips in Chicago have just been us. I think it sounds like a fun idea and I love that age group.
  13. In my home once we turned 18 we owed rent and it was more if we didn't clean up. Living at home then became a priviledge so if you didn't shape up you were out of there. As for cleaning very little was expected except the bathroom and any dishes. At 18 you were expected to be working full time or working parttime and attending school so you didn't have time to make a mess. I wanted to add by the time we were 16 we paid for all of our personal expenses including clothes, entertainment, eating out, school activities; and we all had a parttime jobs. There weren't cell phones & ipods but I can't imagine my mom ever paying for that after we turned 16. However, by the time most of us were 18 we were out of the house.;)
  14. Well...I am for Romney. And I am only posting because there were negatives posted about him and I wanted to show there are people for him.:D Actually, I have talked to a few people who personally know their family and I am impressed with what they had to say. I also like how on interviews he points out the common ground between the different parties (i.e. environment, health care) and how we can use that to actually move forward. If I was a democrate I would be voting for Obama because I think he has passion and vision...I just disagree with his policies.:p Personally I think he should have run for governor of Illinois and then for President. I think it would have given him more experience. On a side note, I will just say I hate the 30 second sound bites. We can handle conservations and the issues we are dealing with are minimized when we try to reduce them to a few sentences. I feel the debate process would work best if each debate focused on only 2 or 3 topics and the participants actually had to speak longer and show what they really know. I would prefer to hear them speak about the economy for at least an hour than the 5 minutes the current debates give them.
  15. Thank you for taking the time to post. We are sad to lose this wonderful, kind man but we are happy that he is with his darling wife. (she passed away a few years ago after 60+ years of marriage). Even my children immediately responded that now he would be with Sister Hinckley. You could tell he was lonely without her.
  16. Thanks! I just bought it. My paperback versions are falling apart and I wanted something more sturdy.
  17. Family of 6. On this years return we owed about $3,500 (after deductions), but with the child tax credit of $4,000.00 we get $500.00 back plus the $1500 that we had paid. Our current withholding on our paycheck is M-16 which we did after using the worksheet on the irs.gov site. We pay 10% tithing + mortgage interest + student loan interest so our deductions are quite high. Our social security and medicaid however are about $6000.00. Then of course we have state tax and property tax.... Now that I realize we actually are getting money instead of paying it I feel a little guilty. (but I will still take it.)
  18. Even though we are now in Kansas my family on both sides lived in Chicago for over 100+ years. I was born & raised in St. Charles. My husbands family is in Geneva/Elmhurst and I have family in Newark, Cary, Lake in the Hills, and just about every other suburb. :)
  19. We are south of Kansas City....I know there are more of you on here. :D
  20. Well, I was doing positive reputations to those who I have enjoyed their comments over the years. I didn't even realize it tied into the actual thread. :o I thought the comment area was a third choice. So maybe it was me :)- who knows. I thought it would send the username along with the positive vote and that it would show up on my control panel as a way to track those you have gotten to know on the board.
  21. Organic Valley here too. It is between $5.50-$6.00 a gallon. What I like about it is the plastic is white so the milk is not affected by light as much and doesn't develop the metalic taste. I also buy a local brand in glass bottles to support the local farms. I also buy organic yogurt & cheese but the brand varies.
