  1. Thanks for posting it, I enjoyed watching it. I have bookmarked it. I have a book titled "Discovering Lehi New Evidence of Lehi and Nephi in Arabia" which would go along with this. As far as the evolution I will have to watch that video. I have "In Search for Harmony" Essays on Science & Mormonism which gives different views and I thought would be great for a high school discussion.
  2. Each of my children are different and I let one attend public school for a year and he chose to come back. My oldest (14b) talked of going back but we adjusted his school and now is content to stay home. When I started my kids were 7, 5, 3, & 1 and we did a few play dates and that was all. Then they started growing up and we were able to do more things. Every kid is so different and every family. If there comes a time he wants more social/friends then you can search out those opportunities. I don't think you should stress about it unless it becomes an issue.
  3. I have always had good intentions of doing a family "walk" but our schedules are so different I never have been able to work it out. I have four boys and what finally worked is doing t-tapp's basic workout together. It is about 15 minutes and has actually held our interest because we are always working on our form. And once again we are going to try and get in walking during the school day before school.
  4. I am still working on the details and am working with another mom splitting up courses. I found as my sons are getting older they enjoy working with another kid their age. So far: History/Writing-Lightning Lit and Comp. American Literature Early-Mid 19th Century this is a homeschool group class with a former English teacher Science- We are so tired of textbooks we are using Scout Merit badges and going to watch "The Joy of Science" lectures from The Great Courses Literature- Suggestions from WTM Spanish- The other mom is fluent in Spanish and so is my husband so they are taking over! :) Art- The other mom was an art major and she is using Artistic Pursuits Math- My son is still trying to choose a program Grammar- Finish Rod & Staff and then be done! I plan on adding gov't to the above and my idea is for us to subscribe to two conservative magazines and to liberal and than analyze both. I might also subscribe to two newspapers. We will then include this in our Rhetoric study. This is why I came back on the boards to try and figure it all out in the next week or so! :P
  5. Well thanks! I joined the boards in 2000 and posted fairly often on the old boards but not as much once these went up. Now I have a son starting high school, one in middle school, and two in elem. and realized I need to get connected again.
  6. Don't know who will remember me but thought I would post anyway. :D This past year I zoned out but am ready to get back into the groove, I am glad to see so many familiar names still! Hope to join in on the conversations again and update our curriculum.
  7. :ack2:No kidding! Guess I am in the wrong line of work with the wrong clients.
  8. I came back to post that I do empathize with you! Even after a good sleep over I am glad to see everyone leave and whenever a mess is made and I am already tired I feel like it is one more thing to add to my "To Do" list and it gets overwhelming. Hope the day gets better and you have fun celebrating the Birthday!
  9. Were the poppers to celebrate his birthday? Did he have a problem with his friend? If the poppers were for his birthday I think it was nice of the dad (who probably was just focusing on your son not the clean up) and I would have everyone help clean up. As for the boy spending the night. We have kids sleep over a lot . I have 4 boys and this week alone we had 3 12 yo sleep over Wednesday (PS started springbreak) and 1 10 yo last night and there usually isn't much bickering. IF my sons had a problem that friend would not be invited over until I had a talk with him or his parents depending on the situation. I also would not hesitate having them take a break from each other during that time. If my son didn't have a problem then I would ignore it and if they were doing it around me I would tell them I don't like to hear it and they need to take it elsewhere.
  10. When my kids ask to watch "their" shows...Good Eats is one of them. :thumbup1: I think his show and America's Test Kitchen inspired their desire to learn how to cook.
  11. In Illinois it is 10 minutes. A few years earlier in Illinois a lady was arrested for going inside to pay for gas on a wintery day and not taking all of her kids inside with her. I believe those charges were dropped also.
  12. I agree with this. I would do the same thing. I think the officer should have asked around and if she did she would have quickly found the mom. I think that is acceptable. In this case once the mother approached instead of yelling at her the officer could have explained she was concerned. The mother would then point to where she was (30 ft) still outside, explained the situation, and then been left alone.
  13. Common Sense is starting to come back. They have dropped the issue. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/13/skittles.suspension.ap/index.html?iref=mpstoryview
  14. I don't think they ever said how long it took. But I assume it didn't take that long and instead of waiting and asking around the officer immediately acted.
  15. Why oh why couldn't I go to your school! Actually most of the clubs at our school sold candy and we had a nice coke machine and hostess cupcakes so I was set. :D
  16. Amen! I will agree with your :banghead: and add :cursing: plus 2 :ack2::ack2: and add on an  for good measure. Maybe they need to start teaching common sense at those workshops they attend while all of the kids get to stay home. I swear I would ask every child to bring a bag of skittles and drop them off at the school door.
  17. I think it showed wisdom to not risk falling which is far more likely then some stranger carjacking her vehicle in a busy walmart lot where officers were present. ;) In the previous article it stated that her husband showed up while she was in the squad car. But if this article is true the fact that the officers didn't even take care of the kids she was supposedly "endangering". Good Grief. :banghead:
  18. Sleet is NOT equal to a hurricane. It would just be like rain mixed with cold temps. People run errands out in the rain all of the time. If you can avoid taking your child out and not getting them wet...you do it. That is common sense. If she was going into the store then she would have gotten her kid out. I take my kids to the library but if it is snowing I will park and go to the drop box by myself and leave the kids in the car. Using the unloading/loading zone so she could unload donations seems fine by me. Ticket her for parking illegally she was wrong (but I am not even sure parking there was illegal) but it is common sense to try and keep your child out of the cold.
  19. Then she should have received a parking ticket and not be arrested. A parking violation is very different then a child endangerment charge.
  20. She is from Illinois....People go out in it all the time to run errands. Seriously unless a blizzard was happening I never postponed errands when we lived in Chicago. N. Illinois has been going through a rough winter and if you waited for it to be warm and nice out you wouldn't be going anywhere. It isn't Florida. :-)
  21. Between this article and this one http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/12/skittles.suspension.ap/index.html I have decided that people no longer can use common sense. I feel like the media has hyped so many rare accidents/incidents people now are paranoid and act out of irrational fear.
  22. When you go to the Ellis Island website you can do a search based on his name, birthdate, country of orgin etc. If the record has been digitized you can get a copy. Now some people came through Ellis Island but for some reason the information is no longer available. But I would start there. Do you know the year he came? That is usually the most helpful. If the Ellis Island website doesn't bring up the information there are other locations you can look. What country did he come from? (you can PM me if you want and I can try and help more) Most of my research is Norway & Germany but I am have done quite a bit of research and would be willing to help.
