  1. Another vote for Molymod here. It was the set I used for Organic in college. Fantastic!
  2. Thank you for the suggestions. My daughter has voted LoF, Zaccaro and to go ahead and start AoPS pre-algebra. I guess our days will be full of Beast free math, at least until the next book comes out. Hurry BA, hurry! Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I might wander over to MEP and see how decimals are covered. MEP, I've checked it out several times, but never really tried it. Teresa
  3. I think you'll like it. My daughter really looks forward to it everyday. Her reading has taken off since we started. Worth every penny.
  4. I have AoPS pre-algebra. How did the transition go? I'm afraid it will be a shocking change. Did you feel like your student was prepared? I don't want a lot of tears (some is ok, lol). I also have Life of Fred Fractions and Zaccaro Upper Elementary Challenge Math, and Math in Focus 4B. There's nothing new in 4B except decimals, but I could cover that in just a couple of days. Life of Fred Fractions is pretty much covered already. The Zaccaro... I'm not sure what to make of it. I want to like it, but I'm just not sure. It seems like you could do the chapters in any order. The first chapter uses ratios and he doesn't really talk about ratios till chapter 13. ???
  5. So we will probably finish book 4C at the end of next week. :( And the BA people are expecting to have 4D available at the beginning of April. What do I do to fill the gap????????? Before Beast Academy we did Math in Focus and she absolutetly hated it with a passion I've not seen for any homeschool curriculum before or since...so that's pretty much out. I need some sort of bridge--some way to pass time that's not expensive, not dull and not Singapore style. Got any ideas? Teresa
  6. I own the worry too much workbook. I'll check out the other book. Thank you.
  7. This is a very good idea and she is due for a checkup anyway. Thank you.
  8. The doctor's office returned my call this morning. They currently have a six to eight week wait. I guess that's ok. We've waited this long, right? They asked me if I was interested in medication or therapy. How to answer? I want what works, whatever that may be. They are going to start us with one of their psychologists and then will refer us to one of their psychiatrists if they think that's necessary. I suspect it will be. I'm glad they have both in their group. I think that will make my life easier. It would really be nice if I didn't have to drive an hour to their office, but I guess that's what comes of living in the middle of nowhere. If your child has or currently receives therapy, how frequently did that occur?
  9. I've used fish oil myself, not EHA, and couldn't tell any difference. Ill look into EHA.
  10. In not really a believer in that sort of thing... But my SIL sells essential oils and has given me a number to try with no effect. Again, sceptical, I've tried dietary supplements as well. I don't think anything short of a professional is going to be able to help us. :( I have been and continue to be willing to try anything though. Thank you.
  11. Some of you are definitely struggling with bigger problems than we are. Thank you for sharing your experiences all of you. It's nice to know I'm not in this boat alone.
  12. We like to play this game called musical beds. My oldest sleeps fine alone in her own bed, but she really likes to sleep in my bed. I put them in bed together in my bed. This keeps the youngest from being alone. Then DH and I can go downstairs and hang out for a little while. When we go to bed, we move them to their own beds. That lasts till about 1 when my little one wakes up in a panic. I bring her back too my room and my husband goes to the guest room. Last night I couldn't get her back to sleep. She was stuck to me like glue and shaking. She lay awake upset for an hour and a half. Of course I couldn't go to sleep after that. Ugh. It made for an exhausting day of home schooling. We checked out early. :( Last winter was probably worse. We had sleep issues, though they weren't this bad, but she was terrified of germs. She washed and sanitized her hands until they cracked and bled. We were part of a co-op and she was out of the classroom every five minutes, sometimes less, to see me and tell me she didn't feel well and to ask if she was dying and did she have a bug in her ear. She won't go to the bathroom by herself. She won't go in any room by herself. She wouldn't pull her violin out of the closet last night because she was afraid there was something in the closet. I was less than five feet from her but she was still terrified. She won't stand in front of windows becauseshe doesn't want the zombies to get her. She is also very irritable. Putting her in timeout is a real challenge. I want her to sit until she is calm and we can talk, but she yells at me when she can see me and if she can't see me she's terrified because she is alone. Last night my husband turned the chair around so that she was facing the wall and she was still hysterical because she couldn't see us, plus angry and yelling hurtful things at me. I was an anxious child myself. I grew into an anxious adult. I take medication that manages my depression and anxiety. I am sympathetic, but helping her is beyond me. We need help. We need someone who knows how to deal with this because my husband and I are at our wits end. I just want her to feel better.
  13. Tell me I'm not alone. Things are pretty bad here right now. My youngest has not been diagnosed or treated, though I finally worked up the courage and placed the call today. Of course, I got voice mail and left a message. No call back. :( We have had bad weather and I'm thinking the office may have been closed today. Now that I've made up my mind to do it, I really just want to get on with it. Last night my little one asked me if she would ever not be scared again. It was heart breaking. She was bundled up in my arms with the lights on, lullabies playing and she was still too frightened to go to sleep. She hasn't let me leave her sight all day. She even showered with me. :( Anyone in a similar boat?
  14. Nancy Larson 4. It's expensive and I havent tried 4, but we have enjoyed 2 and 3. I'm combining my 1st and 4th in NL 3. I expect to try 4 next year. I don't know how much supercharged science is though.
  15. My daughter is only six and a half, I bought Apples and Pears thinking we would just take it slow. It really wasn't sticking. I guess we are on spelling sabbatical too. (Love that) I'm trying to tell myself that it's ok to wait until she is a rock solid reader. I think there is a lot of wisdom in Ellie's waiting approach. My oldest didn't have any spelling stick with her until last year (third grade). We tried AAS, LoE Essentials, Sequential spelling and Apples and Pears. I don't think her sudden ability has a whole lot to do with the program we are using (we saw good results with SS and A&P) but more to do with timing.
  16. It's probably because I missed something. ;)
  17. We did it the BA way. ;) Once I knew she had it down, I taught her the"old-fashioned" way. (Suddenly feeling quite old.) I also let her watch the Kahn academy video that teaches the standard algorithm. I then let her choose which to use. She picked the standard algorithm. I've been working through the AoPS pre algebra book. There's a lot of multiplying going on with some fairly large numbers and they assume 0 calculator use. If I only had partial products in my tool box...I think I'd fling the book across the room.
  18. I haven't used Megawords, but I do use and like Apples and Pears. You can look at the entire contents of the books on their website if you think you might be interested. They also have placement tests there. My daughter's spelling has really improved since we started it. We are about a third of the way through the second book. We do one lesson a day. It's a lot of writing. Some people break it up over more than one day, but I'm really trying to get her up to grade level with spelling quickly so we spend about 15 minutes a day with it which allows us to complete the whole lesson. We've been through several spelling programs: AAS, LoE, Sequential Spelling, but we really really like Apples and Peers and it seems to be working so far. I hope that helps.
  19. Why worry about the five year old or three year old at this point? If you are in crisis mode, this is the first thing that I would cut. Kids that age are just as well playing.
  20. We also don't have trouble with pages falling out. I have pulled the answers out and bound them in my own book of misc school stuff. I know being able to check your own work is very grown up, but my daughter makes a lot of careless mistakes. I like to be able to look over her work and say no, try again without her having the answers.
  21. We like it a lot too. It really is only 15 minutes. Might be the only curriculum that works as quickly as advertised.
  22. Maybe ask on the logic stage boards since it's a middle school curriculum? Just an idea. I'm curious too.
  23. I don't know, but I would like to. We are going to try CPO Life Science next year. Have you used NL 4? I'm really enjoying 3, but I'm not sold on the materials in 4. It doesn't look very rigorous. Is it?
  24. Great! Thanks. I have to have everything handy too or it just won't happen.
