  1. I'm working through MIF 2A with my 6 year old and we've gotten to the chapter where they introduce Singapore style bar models. She's demonstrated her ability to do them several times, but she's really put out with me because she's answering the math mentally and then she thinks it's a waste of time to then draw the bar model. I think the bar diagrams might be useful eventually (might...my oldest hated them and ditched them quite happily when she started BA at this age) but I also think I could reintroduce them when the problems become more difficult. Today for example, she read, "Mr. Jackson drove 427 miles last week. This week he drove 215 miles. How many miles did he drive in two weeks?" She did some quick mental calculations and then she seemed put out when I asked her to draw the model (but she did it anyway). I need permission to skip. :) My husband and I agree that we always hated when we were asked to show our work in school and there was no work to show because we just knew the answer. I hate for her to feel I'm wasting her time (though I don't think it's a complete waste, well maybe I do, I just don't know). I'm really conflicted. I want to keep her interested in math so I don't want to make it drudgery. Her sister was begging for more at this age, and Annabelle is just, "can we be done with this now?" What would you do. She doesn't seem at all challenged. Help.
  2. The same class is being taught at Athena's. Anyone with experience there?
  3. The title pretty much says it all. My youngest will finish up Logic of English Cursive workbook but will need continued practice or copywriter. I'm not interested in making my own, so does anyone know of a workbook or prepared copywork in a similar style? Is it Modern Cursive?
  4. Has anyone taken one of these. I'm particularly curious about the science classes.
  5. We got an early start on school this morning! We should be done by lunch, which is great. Of course, I'm exhausted so I'm going to need a nap. I guess it kind of backfired, huh?
  6. And I just got an e-mail inviting my youngest to perform with her dance class at a local arts venue for fun and to recruit new students. It's usually her older sister, who is in company, that gets invited to do all the cool dance stuff. She's going to be so excited.
  7. http://www.mensaforkids.org/achieve/excellence-in-reading/ How about this one? A free t-shirt when it's complete.
  8. Our Beast Academy 4D came today! My math crazy daughter will be thrilled! My not math crazy daughter will be puzzled by our math enthusiasm.
  9. The mailman jammed it in the mailbox!!!!!!!! It's here! It's here! I can't wait for tomorrow. I think I'll surprise her!
  10. How in the world did you get it so fast? (Hold on while I check the porch...Nope, not here.) I saw the Facebook post and bam, ordered it with express shipping! My daughter is waiting impatiently and so am I.
  11. I'd like to punch it in the throat too. I'm working my way through that very book. Thanks for the additional recommendation.
  12. You are all very serious today. You have serious issues, so I understand. Prayers for you. But now, for me. ;) My friend just called and asked me to babysit her baby (4 months) on Thursday! I'm so excited. While I don't want another baby of my own, I do enjoy a good baby snuggle now and then. Also, we are a week into treatment of my youngest's anxiety. :( We've seem some improvement, so that's good. I'd like an instant fix because I'm just patient like that, but I guess that's not going to happen. Until then, I'll follow her from room to room and sleep with her sweaty body pasted to my back. Carry on, T
  13. If we are planning a trip, I don't want to be left out!
  14. Like Farrar, we are moving to Jousting Armadillos, though we will probably move from that to AOPS. I have the books and have worked through some of it myself. I'm waiting for my daughter to mature a little before we try it. She still deals with challenge by breaking into tears...even after BA. We used a variety of resources to cover decimals, percentages, and a couple of extra topics that I thought she needed before jumping into JA. That said, we are dropping JA for BA briefly. I just love BA and so does she. I imagine we will pause whatever we are doing every time a fifth grade book comes out too.
  15. Good morning all. I'm taking a lazy day. It's my anniversary (14 years, wooohooo!) and my children have decided that is enough of a holiday to call off school (any excuse for those two). I'm in because yesterday was lost to a doctor's appointment and tomorrow will be as well. May as well make it a buy 2 get 1 free. On another up note, the doctor we saw yesterday seems really competent and I'm hoping he can help my daughter with the anxiety she's been dealing with for a long while now. Prayers for your dad Openhearted.
  16. I'm here. After a long, exhausting day, I'm settling in for a good forum read.
  17. Now we are watching "How the States Got Their Shapes". I'm telling you, this is a schooly spring break...astronomy, narration, geography. I'm totally counting this as a school day (if I counted, that is).
  18. Some depressed people have no appetite, but I've always been the kinds to eat my emotions. It also is a cruel joke that antidepressants cause weight gain. Aren't I depressed enough already? I need body image issues too? That said, I was first treated for depression shortly after my marriage. I was in very bad shape and my marriage really suffered. I also gained a lot of weight then. I've never been as heavy as I am now though, outside of pregnancy. The drug Abilify and I have a real love/hate relationship.
  19. I'm going to call this a school day because I had to listen to a very long narration of one of her favorite books from the Warriors series. Narration is school right?
  20. Yes, her elocution is flawless, but she's like the most boring professor ever. She rivals my college limnology class for entertainment value. (But at least then, my professor was eye candy! I used to see him at the gym all the time...back when I used to go to the gym.)
  21. My daughter has been reading me astronomy information for the last half an hour from my phone. I'm bored to tears. Come entertain me people!
  22. Good morning! I'm celebrating spring break here today. I'm going to do absolutely NOTHING! My MIL invited my kids over, so now it's just little old me. I could use this as an excellent opportunity to clean up around the house, but I'm not going to. I'm going to sip this delicious cup of coffee, hang out around the forums, and maybe...maybe...trim my dogs nails. You've inspired me. ETA: Oxford Comma. ;)
