  1. Jenn, Just in cas you weren't brave enough to look Hell on Wheels is on the list. I just spent a really really long time going through that list with all my library tabs open, my wish lists are overflowing because my holds are full. I have read my fair share of books and authors on that list. ;)
  2. Since I managed to double post I might as well update with my latest book. Currently reading Visions by Kelly Armstrong. It is thd second in her new series which is simply OK. Going slow, probably partly me. I am rather enthralled by my latest quilt project, hexagon quilting. It is rather like making mosaic pictures with the dc's which I loved.Hand sewing is hard on the hands. I have drawn blood a few times! My fingers are going to need s break soon....so I will need to go back to my books.
  3. I loved that book also! I haven't read any of his others. I would like to. Maybe he should go on Robin's list of idea's. Did someone here read the Map one a couple of years ago? I wanted to read that one but couldn't find a copy.
  4. I actually miss jello served American style with fruit or carrots. My mom firmly believes it is a staple. ;) Watching it eaten with ice cream with loads of candy on top at kids bday parties is a bit scary but super common here. My kids are glad that they are beyond having that served to them on a sort of regular basis too. They prefer Grandmas concoctions too.
  5. Mayo in any form Mustard This leads to an universal dislike of anything that could contain either. :) Even jello salads with white layers scare me. Pickled items are a bit hit or miss with me. Love dill pickles but not a fan of pickled beets. I can eat non pickled beets if I have to.
  6. There are a few active groups in our area. Not all classical (none are, but varying academic leanings) but groups that plan outings where my kids have friends who are home educated. All have their merits although I stand out pretty noticeably, Christian home ed with a classical curriculum who makes her kids do school. I have stopped all talk in rooms with the mention that we can stay longer as long as they promise to finish their latin when we get home. But I was asked privately later how to do Latin and some gave it a try. :) What I am trying to say is the groups are worth it in my opinion. I (and my kids) have made friends with a wide assortment and learned a lot. I keep a spare loaner copy of the WTM which I give to people with questions. At this point I am the mom with the older kids ..... Home Service runs a Christian Home Ed conference in Wales beginning of September. We don't attend but friends love it. Pm me if you need details. Both of you feel free to pm me with questions, willing to try and answer.
  7. I am so glad you enjoyed the book and agree that Jenn would enjoy them. I somehow managed to read these out of order also, 2-1-3 , and actually did not mind. Gasp!!! These books have a lot of depth and even though you know the basics there is so much more to the story. Knowing the spoilers actually didn't matter. It mght have made the first one a bit more poignant but as I remember foreshadowing existed to some level......
  8. When I joined the BaW crowd it seemed like everyone was reading this series. They are good. I don't know if fluffy is a good description because guys on motorcycles is really not my idea of fluffy. Adult content also. I won't name people but a couple of you should probably download the first one for free and try them. ;) Angel, Glad you had such a great time. Your dh sounds like my kind of trip planner with lots of activities. :) And
  9. Libraries in England are generally regional, so several small libraries grouped together with one card catalogue. I have cards in three different systems. I simply requested cards in two nearby systems explaining that we are a home educating family. No problem with that. Moving the books within a system is easy. In all three that service is free for children and costs roughly 20p for adults. Moving books between systems is possible but a bit painful (I tried once). I generally just order a used copy from Amazon or find a substitute. Books here sometimes have different titles and almost always have a different cover then in the US. This makes it hard to grab a book or two for pleasure at the library sometimes. We did home ed off the library shelves pretty exclusively for our first year here (they were 7 and 9) so it is possible. Lots of great non fiction. We tended to go search the shelves then put together a unit study based on the most interesting finds. We did British History using Our Island Story as the spine, supplimenting with the library and field trips.
  10. :grouphug: I hope the rest of the day goes better.
  11. We don't eat them! Shrimp cocktails in the UK are basically shrimp mixed up with mayo (probably it's homemsde mayo, I wouldn't know ;) ) which is a huge shock if you aren't expecting it. Have a safe trip!
  12. I am really late to the party but fun thread! Creekland is right this thread shouldn't die, at least not yet. Another mayo hater here! I always thought I was weird so thrilled to discover that there are so many of us. Perfume gives me a headache..... High school reunions......I only went to my 10th and learned that several classmates had died but have no idea who. The committee (they have done all of our reunions as far as I know) decided it was too depressing so just threw those notifications out. They decided we shouldn't keep track....seriously. Just one of the reasons I haven't gone again.
  13. Shukriyya....I read a Judith Cutlerhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20767173-death-in-elysiumcalled Death in Elysium that might interest you. I remember the village politics and PCC descriptions as being very present day accurate and hilarious from my perspective (dh is on the PCC). The books centers on a successful career woman from the city (maybe advertising in Birmingham) who marries a widowed small village vicar after a whirlwind courtship. The village ladies are in shock....and they would be. I can't remember how cozy the murder was though which could be a problem for you. Someone else was planning to read it, maybe they can chime in.
  14. He is adorable!!!! I added the Riley Jensen series to my list. :)
  15. I am almost done with One Night More by Mandy Baxter. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19083258-one-night-more?ac=1. I am enjoying it. Adult content. I remember Brave New World. I haven't read it since high school.
  16. I went searching for Under an English Heaven again and found it. It is out there for free as an ebook for Prime and kindle unlimited members. I have a prime book waiting to be read, The Pines.....first book from that Wayward Pines tv show. I couldn't watch it but saw loads of ads so thought I would try the book.
  17. I never go a chance to respond earlier this week...I read the post while out and couldn't post then. I did look for Under an English Heaven but couldn't find it. It does look like my type of book. I am glad you are enjoying it. Hopefully it will appear in one of my libraries soon. :)
  18. I feel left out because I don't get squiggles on the WTM board. Now you know another reason why I make some interesting errors. I only post off my fires purchased on both sides of the Atlantic, btw. They all live on EST because it is an easy way for me to keep track of the time and my mom so it has nothing to do with the clock function. All my kindles spell British so I think someone (most likely my son) did that for (to) me. They also spell British no matter where I am physically. I have allowed it to continue because it is easier to get in the habit of British spellings for my life in general.
  19. We have several basic kindles with the keyboard (2nd generation and up) and all have been great workhorses. I have wanted a paperwhite for awhile but haven't been able to justify the need for one. Since we are discussing them, Can a paperwhite be read in the dark? I have been assuming they can't. That would probably be the only reason I would switch without needing to. I love my fires for that but would be happy to stop being tempted to browse other things! Fyi...Refurbished kindles are available in the UK at least. We have bought a couple of them....I can't remember which ones so obviously it hasn't been an issue usage wise. ;)
  20. The factory reset is what worked on mine. I am chuckling over where that link leads. ;) Kareni, That poem is wonderful! :)
  21. I am still waiting on that one! Stacia, I ended up giving up on Johannes Cabel The Detective. This one felt much darker to me and seemed to be rather callous regarding death. People were being killed way too frequently for my taste. It just didn't seem to be as clever as rhe first.
  22. Teacherzee. :grouphug: on the kindle. I suspect Butter is right about the update. If not, try doing a hard reset (dh took charge of that one). My dead kindle returned minus all the books which were safely in my account. I had been keeping way too many on my reader.
  23. I really need to get back to my Anita Blake reread so that I can read the last couple of books that are in the series. Glad you are enjoying the latest. I gave up on The Swimmer.....too depressing politically. Probably a good thriller for some, just not me now. If that makes sense. Kareni, Thanks for the reviews. Glad you found your book. So frustrating. Still waiting for Losing it. I just started a new one called The Saint's Wife by Laura Gallagher. Calling it fluff isn't really fair to this one. It looks like fluff but is rather thought provoking. It centers on the wife and business partner of a dying public figure who is charismatic and bigger than life in public but dreadful in private. The wife was planning a divorce (rightfully) before the diagnosis and is now stuck, the partner who has been pressuring her to stay is realizing what he is asking. Sad but I can't seem to stop.
