  1. DS used to practice vocab over at freerice.com and then we transitioned to a Latin/Greek roots study.
  2. Maybe look at the LOE handwriting samples. The instructions are very specific.
  3. What is funny about that is homeschoolers and private school families still pay taxes. How else does a school get money? Free breakfast and lunch programs? Sorry, but my family doesn't qualify.
  4. I have nothing meaningful to add except that I hope your DD gets well soon. :grouphug:
  5. There is a lot of truth in that statement plus I carry the manipulatives with the RB/HOE/James Taunton/Sousa/BSEE knowledge that I have gleaned to make it work. Go get cheesecake!
  6. I combined this with MUS for Pre-Algebra. MUS blocks are awesome for integer math because you can turn them upside down to rep a negative number. I really liked the McDougal-Littell Pre-Algebra text but can't quite identify why.
  7. Woman, listen to OhE on this...You concern me because you are questioning results that you haven't even seen in writing yet. Yeah, do the sensory stuff and purchase the swings and equipment. Just try not to speculate too much unless you have some extra training and education that you haven't previously mentioned. Did you see OhE's thread about duct tape? An OT used sports tape on her son and it worked like a sensory vest. Who knew that would be effective? I am constantly in awe of the therapies that work with these kids. Both of my kids are low tone. My DS has some tested left side weakness and major balance issues that have shown significant improvement with a ped PT.
  8. Gently...Wait until you get the results. :) It's pointless right now to speculate.
  9. I took my DD to the library and checked out a book on Egypt because I could not remember if we owned it. Turned the book in late, paid the late fee, and then discovered the same book that we do own, high up on a book shelf.
  10. I am late to the party. For DS with 3 SLDs, he's outsourced with Apologia Chem and ABeka Spanish. We are on our 2nd year of algebra and started using Lial's. What a breath of fresh air! I.love.it. For whatever reason, DS never challenges me with math and I am forever thankful for his tender heart. Last school year, the final 6 weeks of school and math wore me out. I literally collapsed every day after algebra because I had to hold my emotions together. DS always makes forward progress with school work and he began to crawl. I have to trust that if we keep plugging, he'll progress but living that reality became a chore. I am better now, but I started to go into a dark place, KWIM? SOOO, DS is taking AO Health, using a Spielvogel World History text, and reading The Odyssey. Grammar and language are covered with IEW Fixit! and a SAT 500 Vocab book. We are dabbling with Windows to the Word and the World Lit curric put out by EIL. I make no attempt to direct DS in his off time interests. He is currently playing with Blender and some Adobe products. I stay out of that loop unless he wants me to purchase something. EF remains a challenge, and we met with a child psych last Friday that wants to start DS on Strattera. We are awaiting some lab results that check son's metabolism prior to starting any meds. For those of you that are inclined, please pray that the LORD will give us and the doctor wisdom and patience as we proceed. Also, please pray for my DD's health. She has been riddled with ear infections and now walking pneumonia for the past 5 weeks. We covet your prayers. And DD, her handwriting problems seem to have worked themselves out. All of her subjects are the typical NT stuff. A friend's DD volunteered to teach P violin over the summer. After the tutor left for college, I happened across another excellent violin teacher. DD is currently using the new tutor and is picking up violin lessons fast. I don't know what to make of that but we are happy if our DD is happy. She loves violin. Have a great Thursday all!
  11. No curriculum suggestion, but Dr. Charles Haynes discusses writing from pictures and developing vocabulary in a webinar he gave last fall. The link follows: http://blog.dyslexicadvantage.org/2014/11/01/teaching-writing-to-dyslexic-students/
  12. There is a free website called classjump.com where you could create a class, upload files, and make the students responsible for downloading their own info. DS loses downloads and emails with attachments from his chem teacher all the time. It is annoying to deal with, so creating an online class repository of handouts and outlines for your entire class might be helpful and fair to all students. You can also post a schedule and homework online using the website.
  13. Wow! and cheaper than a vest too. Had you used a vest before?
  14. How awesome is that! I'd like to know which pressure points calmed him. Unfortunately, the kiddos and I are extremely sensitive to adhesive and latex. Our skin bubbles and takes forever to heal after using a latex free band aid. :(
  15. Not all children have the same issues. My DS does not overreact when he is stressed. He is not an anxious person and he was completely fine with the testing. I have always requested that the testing be spaced out. If your child is anxiety prone, I would plan on plenty of rewards when done. For example, my DD likes her fingernails painted and likes to eat at a certain restaurant. DS likes model airplanes. Make it light and fun. The testing is only for a short while and not all experiences are trauma filled but really depends upon the issues involved.
  16. I don't understand the reasoning behind IM. I have always speculated that it trains the patient to focus deliberately. Perhaps, impulsitivity of the patient is redirected and brought into mindful control by clapping. I don't know..I met a women that told me her son with mixed ADHD son stopped most of his impulsive ADHD behaviors after IM but that he was still inattentive and required meds.
  17. With IM provided at the OT, the patient wears headphones as they clap, bounce, and/or stomp to 54 BPM and is purposefully distracted. A beeping will occur in the headphones that indicates whether to speed up or slow down. What is interesting about the beeping is that the student has to remember which side indicates the increase or decrease with clapping to adjust to the 54 BPM. DS improved dramatically with his clapping accuracy. As others have mentioned, IM had no affect on rhythm. DS could focus better but that was about it. The same OT worked with my DD 2.5 years later and I was not nearly as impressed with her. It was almost as if IM was her main strategy for dealing with kids. I later discovered that the OT had overlooked some rather serious balance and developmental motor issues with each of my kids, but that is not IM's fault. I don't believe IM is worth $150 per office visit.
  18. DS received the label last year, aged 14 with the 3rd np. She was chomping at the bit to apply that label. I would love to hear about that supplement.
  19. DS is my 15yo 2e, slow processor that types most everything. He is diagnosed inattentive ADHD and I expect he will start meds next week. We met with the child psych on Friday. I am scared.to.death about this.
  20. Visual accommodation is the ability to focus near and far for copying and is affected by developmental motor issues. Maybe take your boy to be evaled by a OT that will look at retained prim reflexes and balance. DS types, so his eyes don't leave the board while copying unless it is math.
  21. You likely know this already, but DS has in a classroom for years and has both dyslexia and dysgraphia. He carries an Echo Smartpen, cell phone, and laptop to each class. He is not embarrassed to ask questions at all. He records the lectures with the Smartpen and takes pictures of the white board with his cell phone. If you could provide handouts in advance of the class, that would be awesome. DS prelistens and takes notes on chapters of books and texts that are to be covered prior to class. If your student can get a copy of someone else's notes after the lecture, so much the better.
  22. https://www.mheonline.com/programMHID/view/0076181804 There are decoding and comprehension books, and I am pretty sure they are available in the UK. IDK about LMB. It seems like a child with ASD would not require LMB because visual memory and spatial thinking are known to be a strength in that population.
  23. So much has happened since DS had IM, and both kids have had therapies plus 3 out of state children's hospital visits. The weekly numbers were no greater than $50 with insurance.
  24. I don't remember the costs. I want to say it was $35 per week with insurance.
  25. DS performed IM with an OT and had homework for 20 minutes, 5 days per week. DS did this for maybe 6-7 weeks over the summer prior to 7th grade. His trumpet tutor noticed a change in son's engagement/sustained attention and was so impressed that he called me at home to say so. I don't regret the therapy; however, the OT overlooked some significant balance and coordination issues, which were not resolved until we discovered a pediatric PT. I expect that IM is just one step in a larger process of OT. One of the regular members of the board (dmmetler maybe?) was involved in some sort of music therapy and recommended this book for young children. I'm not sure that young children can even clap at 54 BPM or if it is even developmentally appropriate. The book linked would likely make a better resource until your child is older.
