  1. Congrats and good luck Pen! I say a little prayer every time DS leaves the house.
  2. DS would never be able to sustain 82 minutes straight on a subject. For breaks, we set timers of 5-10 minutes. The behavior mentioned was interesting and is an example of everything DH and I were warned about when discussing possibly placing DS at the local dyslexia school. NO ONE that knew my son wanted him in that environment.....DS is kind and compassionate and funny. He was the opposite of a behavior problem, and disrespecting teachers never happened. Project based learning (PBL) was incorporated every year that DS was homeschooled through science labs, computer literacy, and AutoCad classes. DS taught himself 3D rendering and project design by molding plastics, working with wood, sewing, and painting in his spare time. I provided the materials and left him to his own devices. Son’s informal logic and Spanish teachers both incorporated PBL in their classes. DS created and presented his own business brochures, t-shirts, and advertising PPTs. PBL was one facet of teaching. I don’t know what I think of that movie because I don’t see my DS in those kids except for the PE element. DS remains uncoordinated but loves bike riding, playing air soft and paint ball, fishing, and hiking.
  3. My dyslexic DS came home from the classroom utterly confused by grammar. In 7th grade, we used Winston, which teaches parts of speech, and the program was a game changer. By the end of 7th grade, he could not reckon why he initially thought that identifying parts of speech was so hard. I’m a huge fan of Winston because it is multi-sensory, using color coded cards and short lessons. DS needed low stress so we examined 3-5 sentences per day. With my DD, we started with CAP’s Well-Ordered Language, which I loved because it is gentle and there are songs to help memorize parts of speech. We quit using WOL because it didn't really cover punctuation/mechanics. Today, I’m looking at MCT’s The Magic Lens 1 and I think I’m in😍. It seems like an excellent followup to something like CAP or Winston because the author comments on the example sentences and analyzes them by looking at parts of speech, parts of sentences, phrases, and clauses.
  4. Maybe contact Merry Gardens directly. I recall her having a lot of information about using LMB product, but we haven’t discussed that topic in a while.
  5. Universities, College Board, and ACT want to see very specific testing that the public school system does not typically provide, and they post their testing requirements on their official websites. OP, I don’t know of any way to increase processing speed. In fact, my son’s numbers have gone down; however, he works quicker now, and I attribute that fact to motivation, remediation, accommodation, and maturity. At university, he receives extra test taking time and types his work.
  6. Well, I want to see a real, no kidding farm kitchen. Hint...hint...
  7. Well, I don't know the author's age, so let's assume 60. If she was 7 at the time, she is hanging onto the opinions of a teacher from 1966. My initial impression of the article was that perhaps the teacher should exhibit more gravitas and up her teaching game by gaining some better classroom management skills. All I see is a teacher getting upset with a young student for acting like the child they are. Maybe she was close to retirement or tired of hippies? I don't know. I happen to like some of MP's product. NAC was great for my fine motor delayed children, I love the Intro to Poetry materials, and we used parts of the Intro to Comp. We used CAP materials as well and I like them slightly better than MP because of their use of color.
  8. https://www.ana-white.com/woodworking-projects/beginner-farm-table-2-tools-50-lumber Sorry. Posted and then saw that you will be picking up.
  9. He’s a hot mess. We think he’s a Doxie/Jack Russel hybrid, and he chews a lot.
  10. My puppy is nearly 8 months old and is chewing like crazy. He destroys stuffies and works over nyla bones. Does anyone have an opinion about bully sticks? What else can we use? He chews on a tug toy and knotted up old socks. He likes the kong. We took away tennis balls because he is adept at chewing the yellow fuzz off. Help me select a new chew toy. Thanks!
  11. The idea of the district not contracting out OG tutors for specific school hours and purpose is utter nonsense and sounds like teacher union games.
  12. DS was at a private school, so his experience was vastly different. I wasn’t always thrilled with son’s private school; however, they allowed recess and PE, retained OG tutors, and taught music and art. Standardized testing started in 3rd grade; however, test scores were not a motivator and did not dominate the academic calendar because the school did not receive any State or Federal monies. Teachers could be fired with cause and were not protected by a union. Most of the current Kindie and 1st grade teachers are OG trained and use that expertise in the classroom.
  13. DS had multiple times through the day and week to socialize at school. SPIRE is a reading program public schools could be using. Slingerland is also an OG program that could be taught to multiple students.
  14. My son was pulled out of class starting in 2nd grade, three times per week at 45 minutes per session. He missed either recess or PE. His classroom never paused for him or the other 3 students in pullout. We started deliberately using audio books at home by 3rd grade. By 3rd grade, he worked with the Wilson tutor 2 times per week at 45 min per session. One day per week he stayed after school so pick up was 30 min after the school let out. He sat though all the normal classes. I guess I don’t understand why the school is making things so difficult. Identify the need early, hire the staff to perform the tutoring, and send the student back to class with accommodations. By the time DS was 4th grade, he did not read like a 1st grader. By 5th grade, he was reading ahead. Comprehension and content areas were always ahead, except grammar mechanics, spelling, and math.
  15. My DS is diagnosed inattentive ADHD but I never considered it when selecting materials. I just kinda knew what was likely to work and was pleasantly surprised to be wrong on occasion. DS used MUS Geometry and MUS Algebra 2. For Algebra 1A, we used 1/2 Foerster’s and for Algebra 1B, we used 1/2 Lial’s Introductory Algebra 8th ed. I supplemented the work with Khan Academy, James Tanton, math graphing software, and supplementary books picked up from Amazon. For years, DS has preferred non-fiction; however, he did eventually enjoy Hawthorne, Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, and Twain in high school. Over most of his classes, I supplemented with documentaries and Teaching Company lectures. I used my Audible subscription which saved money with the TC products. DS worked with a CBT for EF his 11th grade year. DS cannot take stimulant meds and had a bad Strattera trial. He opted not to pursue meds again until working with the CBT first. The CBT work has helped with his sustained attention. Maybe consider working with a CBT that shares an office with a child psychiatrist who can prescribe meds if necessary. Overall, we used normal curriculum but supplemented and modified when appropriate. I never thought online learning worked well for him, but then he completed two years of online Autocad classes. DS regularly used Youtube to figure things out.
  16. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015X6FENI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Rocks and Minerals kit: A hive member recommended it on another thread. It’s frightening to recognize how easily suggestible I am.
  17. Sister, the heat index was 116 deg today. We redecorated and cleaned up in May. DS pressure washed the driveway, books were donated or stored, the office was cleaned and overhauled, my living room looks amazing with a new area rug, wall art, shelving, pillow covers, new outdoor lights, and deck furniture. The rain was so bad earlier this year that I started looking for things to change that I could control. I also turned 49 yo and lost 22lbs since Feb. I’m now planning the dining room upgrades.
  18. I love to eat chicken, but taking care of them is another matter entirely because live chickens gross me out. My neighborhood doesn’t allow livestock either. My DS was recently paid to look after a friend’s coup while they traveled. DS felt that looking after chickens was easier than caring for dogs. He’s dog sat this summer too.
  19. Funny that you mention that. I am bored. DD has been wanting to participate in science fair, so about an hour ago, I ran a solar oven science fair idea across DD and DH. DH is currently surveying USB temp data loggers. Thank-you, Carol. Last night, I selected bees wax for candle making. Thank-you, Pen. Since school and my crazy May have ended, I’ve sewn a Roman shade and resurrected an 8 year old PC by loading it with Linux and replacing and upgrading the broken USB ports. DD has a new Dancing Bears rock kit. My goals are typed for next school year and curriculum is ordered. I think I like the monogramed front porch rug idea. Thank-you, PeterPan. I’m definitely leaning towards fruit fabric. Thank-you, Pen and kbutton. I want the butter and cheese book for me now. Thank-you, Fairfarmhand.
  20. The property is 175 acres and partially treed. It’s common for loggers to pay property owners to selectively fell and remove trees. It’s also common to make arrangements with neighbors to harvest straw for animal feed. There are also hunting agreements. The neighbors use the back part of the property for hunting and then give them game such as turkey and deer.
  21. I love my friend, but I’m not spending $250 on a solar oven. My DD has no idea what is about to happen to her because I can totally see us making butter and the oven. Fun fact..As I was creating the thread last night, a severe storm blew through and knocked out our power for about 3 hours. Maybe we can start candle making too. I really like 1920s and 1930s repro fabric, so I could use that or get something striped like ticking or cherries or flip and go modern with gray. Thanks for the ideas.
