  1. I love The Road Not Taken by Frost, tied with The Lady of Shalot by Tennyson~ I had to know WHAT Anne was reading in the opening scene of Anne of Green Gables!
  2. We all 5 take Carlsons lightly lemon cod liver oil. We started on the capsules, and are now buying the 16.9 oz. liquid bottle and taking it in a teaspoon, Mary Poppins-style.:D It's very inexpensive this way~ Vitacost.com has the best prices that I've found. HTH!
  3. Okay, I may be losing it~ I've read over the student, teachers and core books several times before attempting to start today. We are doing the preparation week lessons today. How do you set up the grammar notebook if you are doing the assignments from Harvey's in this notebook and NOT buying the CW Harvey's student workbook? Do the grammar definitions go in the front half of the book and the answers to each lesson's questions go in the second half, under the grammar exercises? Most of the questions for the first two lessons ARE the definitions, so ds needs to write them in both sections? I can't find anything that stated what, exactly, goes in the front half of the notebook. The Theory checklist shows reading, notebook definitions and questions as our work for the day~ I'm totally confused already; not a good sign of things to come.........:001_huh: Help, please!!!
  4. We used it as a supplement, along with McGuffey readers and after 100 EZ lessons.
  5. Hide and eat chocolate. Sounds like a good field trip day.......;) They can do the stuff over the weekend that they didn't get to today, right? The joys of homeschool! Did you get a picture of the straws?????:D And, I agree with your kids about Sister Wendy~
  6. Let me just say that I have a new favorite movie. What a wonderful story~ So precious, my husband even said that it is one of the best movies HE'S ever seen.........
  7. 100% agree~ I had to teach the multiplication tables 3 times!!! in a year to my middle son. We would drill, drill, drill, he would have them forward and backward. Come next Monday, he would look at me like I had lost my mind when I would ask him what 6x7 was......:001_huh: (I seriously considered medicating myself throughout this) BUT, patience and diligence prevailed, and he finally retained them. WHOO HOO!!! Try the flashcards with the answers first, then without. I remember my 5th grade math teacher giving us timed tests on multiplication several times, every day until every kid in the class knew them. And I know too many adults who still can't multiply their 6, 7s, 8s and 9s in their head............... Hang in there~
  8. I agree with the above post~ I am a christian. I would never initiate a discussion about my faith with a child! EVER. Simply because I would be mad as hell if someone else did the same to my little ones. That's MY job. The lady seems to be showing off her amazing conversion abilities, not to mention that she can just conjure up a miracle whenever she asks for one. ;-) I would say that it is for whoever is reading her blog. ie: financial supporters, churches, etc. She WAY crossed the line, and unfortunately, she most likely won't stop this 'crusade' that she seems to be on. I would definitely confront her, and never let your kids go to her house unsupervised. I'd consider letting her kids come to my house; you haven't done anything wrong~ So sorry that you have to be exposed to this type of christianity.........
  9. Hobby Lobby and Mardel have a set of 24, I think, them for $6.99~
  10. Hang in there. I know that it is very hard, but try not to get upset about things that are completely out of your control. There is always light at the end of the tunnel~ Send that sweet baby loving thoughts and peace, as often as you can. I'll be praying that you will be the calm in the storm for your husband...... You're not alone in this~ :grouphug:
  11. I bought the second edition, after reading your comments on this board. It is very user friendly. Great information on implementing the suggestions, schooling multiple ages, etc. What are the main differences between the two? The second edition says a little about the differences in the first part of the book. It listed oop books as one reason, ease in schooling more than one level as another.......
  12. For those of you that own this book, are the lesson practices contained in the text doable without buying the CW Harvey workbooks? Can you just copy the practice lessons into a notebook? Is the elementary grammar book sufficient for a 7th, 5th and k'er? I'm hoping to use it with the oldest along with CW for Older Beginners, just to cover any gaps that we may have. I love that it claims to cover all grammar needed. That would be nice. I've debated using CW without it, and for once, I'm going to try and follow the curriculum the way that it's written~;) We'll see how long that lasts........ Thank you in advance!
  13. I got my copy of Latin-Centered Curriculum today. I didn't make it through the first chapter before crying tears of joy. Thank you, Andrew Campbell, for taking the time to write this wonderful book!
  14. We've been unemployed since Nov. 21st. It sucks. Having faith gets harder, the longer you go without offers and interviews. That being said, I am totally confident that God has big plans for us. I have learned a lot about myself and what I valued from going through this. We pray every day that He will close every door that opens, except for the one that He has planned for us. THAT takes faith. My dh and I have both had a few pity party days, but thankfully, it's never been at the same time.....;) Our kids now realize that: money doesn't just come spitting out of the ATM every time you want something, they can't go out to eat every time mom doesn't feel like cooking dinner or there isn't their favorite foods in the fridge and I have learned how to live on next to nothing. We have savings, but I feel that this is a test for me to learn what it means to be a good steward. I miss Target! I love going grocery shopping! We've relocated to a town where there is nowhere to shop except Walmart and the local grocery store. I'm talking the smallest Walmart ever, and the most worthless grocery store I've ever been in. I guess that He removed all temptation to spend for me.:D Hang in there. And pray lots and journal throughout this. You won't want to forget this part of your journey........ Encourage his job seeking~
  15. Beth, I am in awe and honored that you took the time to help me think this through. Let me say, the dad and mom live 4 hours away from where we are now. We are staying with my parents, but have the option of moving into my dh's grandmother's house, where we would be alone and have our space. The mom would not drive 14 minutes to see him, I doubt she would make trouble with me. UNLESS, she stops getting child support for him...... Dad would pay for his expenses, and is currently speaking with an attorney about his legal options in getting custody of him, possible all three kids. I told him that my dh and I are praying and talking about the possibility of the son staying with us, for the rest of the school year. BUT, dad, mom and son have to be 100% committed to the academic demands, my rules and our very different lifestyle. He understood and was in shock that we would even consider it. The dad mentioned me homeschooling him as a joke, but dh and I called him back to discuss the possibility after we thought about it. The funny thing is, that my husband and I talked 2-3 days ago about this family and a 20-something soccer camp coach being the reason that God moved us to central Arkansas for 3 years~ I don't believe in coincidences. Period. There have just been way too many in my life for me to call them 'chance'. We moved out of the state 5 wks ago, and we were the first people that the dad called about this. That says something, I think. It's just a difficult thing to think through........
  16. The 'mom' is on no one's side, unless they are writing her a check...... I tried babysitting the mentioned girls when they were 9 and 11yo, and mom would 'forget' to pick them up, forget to tell them and ME that she was going halfway across the US for a mini-vacation, etc. She is the strangest person I have ever met, and unless she's on drugs, there is no explanation of her behavior. The girls have been exposed to any and everything, raised by cable tv and the internet, so it was a culture shock when they came to our house. I took their cellphones at the door, and they learned how to play with their imaginations, which was something that they had never done before. We had/have no cable, so unless they were watching one of our owned dvds, there was no tv. No ipods, bc they listen to music that makes ME blush, and I didn't want my boys hearing it and singing along~ I could not handle the disrespect that the mom showed me, and I was enraged at her behavior, as she is my exact age and needs a good spanking! Finally, I had to tell the dad that I couldn't deal with her anymore, and he understood, after dealing with her for years. I regret letting that get to me, bc now the girls are at the age where one unsupervised afternoon can ruin their lives..... And there are plenty of those! BUT, with three sons, I cannot in good conscience, take in a wordly girl and expect my sons to stay innocent. The son, he's very respectful and he looks up to my dh and I. He just needs some direction and someone that believes in him, I think...... You are blowing me away with your comments! Please keep them coming, along with your prayers~
  17. We're getting ready to start the chalkdust prealgebra course. I found all of the materials on amazon, thanks to one of the threads listed here. It looks solid, we are just waiting on the dvdroms. All for $80~
  18. All year here. We are finishing up all of our classes and moving on to the next level right now. It's amazing how far ahead you can get, just by doing it for a year~ We do the core subjects every day, and fill in with the extras throughout the year. After one year of it, I'm hooked!
  19. Would you take on a 9th grader as a student? A 9th grader that isn't related, comes from a messed up family situation and doesn't have any direction right now? He's a sweet boy that has too much freedom. Mom is a deadbeat; she thinks and acts like she's 16. Dad is very loving, but travels 4 days a week. He's in a school right now that has BAD gang issues and he's worried about getting shot or stabbed. The school denies that there is an issue, even though there is proof..... I love this dad and his three kids. The other two are in an okay school and are girls, so mom is occasionally there for them, but never for the son. My 12yo is getting ready to start his 7th grade year, and it's probably the level that this boy would be. The dad just called and talked to me, and we agreed to pray about it. If he's willing to follow our rules and work hard, I'd attempt it. He will have to live with us, too. Any advice? Thanks in advance........
  20. We use olive oil, but not for cooking. I add it to cooked foods to preserve the integrity of it. For cooking, I use grapeseed oil, peanut and coconut oil, as they can remain stable at high temperatures. HTH~
  21. You might be interested in researching homeopathic medicine. It WAS medicine pre-pharmaceuticals. Homeopathic medicine treats the symptoms of allergic reaction, not unlike pharmaceuticals. The likelihood of a negative reaction, however, is very low, much unlike pharmaceuticals. Here are a few links you may find useful. HTH~ http://abchomeopathy.com/taking.htm http://www.homoeo.com/articles/allergies.shtml http://www.healthrepaircenter.com/allergy/homeopathic-allergy-remedy.html http://www.hylands.com/aboutmain.php Here is a link to the Oxford Journal that verifies that they have homeopathic experts on their board of evidence-based and complementary medicine. http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/ecam/edboards.html
  22. My parents have used one for the last month. They have SBC internet only for $30 + tax. The magic jack has some kinks to work out, and it is affected by how quick or slow you computer is. There is a little delay in the conversation, but not noticeable. We unplug the internet at night, so we have to wait 5-10 minutes for that to reconnect, and then reset the magic jack, which means clicking once on your screen. It works perfectly fine for $20 a YEAR......... We all have cell phones, so the savings vs a regular phone and long distance is substantial. It's totally worth it, and if you can put up with a little learning curve, then it's a great deal. You get a local phone number, but you have to dial the area code, even for local calls. Honestly, it's no more difficult to get used to than getting a new cell phone and having to figure out what all of the features are.....:001_huh:
