  1. If the pedal is on an electric cord, is it movable? Could it be placed on a box to raise it a bit?
  2. Well, that's interesting, Garga. I'll have to run another test. :~)
  3. Well, I think the black ones are a much better quality. It seems like the yellow ones don't sharpen nearly as nicely. Of course, that could be all in my head, but I'm not wasting my money on any other kind. I'm positive that the erasers are better!
  4. I won't duplicate the previous lists because mine are quite similar. However, I swear by the black Ticonderoga pencils, and I don't believe I've ever seen them on sale. Therefore, I don't worry about buying ahead. I'm not too fond of the cheap notebooks that go on sale, but they work fine for taking notes, scrap paper for math, etc. I prefer the heavier weight paper for serious writing and notebooking. I generally stock up on both. I definitely need to add rubber cement to the shopping list. Thanks for the reminder!
  5. I've read The Canning Season and enjoyed it, but I would preread it if I were you before I gave it to the ages you've mentioned. It has some questionable situations and language. Read some amazon reviews for details.
  6. I had an article from long ago, 50 states cake recipes. I think it might have been in Midwest Living or Southern Living. Actually, they may have skipped a few states, but it would give you a start. The 50 shakes idea sounds fun!
  7. That would be science. And foreign language would be nice as well. But I'd want someone to come here. No way are we driving anywhere else during the week!
  8. I've just skimmed the replies here, but I believe that the number one concern for ALL parents should be the data that will be collected on the children, not the level of academic standards. Government grants through the stimulus package were used to entice cash-strapped states to agree to the Common Core during a few short summer weeks without the approval of the vacationing state legislatures. Local governments had no say in the adoption. Although we as homeschoolers see the alignment of companies to the CC standards as inocuous, something that doesn't affect us as homeschoolers because many of us are free to choose what we use, this is not the most devious part of the movement. And it is designed to appear innocent, have no doubt, so we won't complain. Preschool through college kids will be tracked, with not only their academic achievements, but their family income, religious and political affiliations, health records, etc., etc. With this data, students will be pigeon-holed into career or academic tracks at an early age. Think of the gymnasts in Communist countries--that type of labeling. I think that if you look past the actual curricular concerns, you will find that the government control that will be implemented will be more invasive than any of us can imagine. During my 40-plus years as an educator, I've seen more educational movements come and go than I can even remember, but the depth of the involvement of CC in the lives of our country's citizens has me really concerned.
  9. Found it!! http://www.educationunboxed.com/mental_math_addition.html
  10. OK, so I finally bought the plastic eggs, now that Easter is upon us, and I can't find that video. I looked at Education Unboxed, but I can't find It. Does anyone have a link, please?
  11. We did the Princess and the Pea bed (from 2nd grade, I think) last week, and tomorrow we're going to do Goldilocks' porridge bowls. Lots of fun!
  12. Ours came today. I've watched parts of grades 2 and 3. Can't wait to get started!,
  13. No way am I falling for this trick. It's like choosing which child you love the best. :001_smile: I don't think you can go wrong with any of the volumes. There are gems in each one.
  14. CLE Language Arts Light Units. At least in the 600 series, I know it has diagramming.
  15. You have the option of doing either the online or the workbook. What I dislike is that some topics that are covered in one are not mentioned in the other. We've basically been doing the workbook only (5th grade level), although if there's a concept that I think will be particularly tricky to grasp, I have DGD watch the online segment. I've not been especially impressed. Unless things improve, I'm quite sure we won't be using this next year. I don't think the cost is justified.
  16. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! All I needed to do was to turn off the pop-up blocker!:blushing: It is beginning to make a little more sense. Is there any way to print the teacher's edition?
  17. Well, I'm still trying to figure it out, and I'm afraid that by the time I do, my year will be expired!:glare: There's a LOT of info there, and I don't consider it to be very user-friendly. I wonder if classroom teachers have to take a day or two of in-service to learn the ins and outs of the program. Science has been our least explored subject, and I was hoping this option would be easier on me, the science dummy. Not so. :001_unsure:
  18. Beth said, ETA: I found the answers to the workbook pages. Right where they are supposed to be. :) And where would this be?? I can't find it. (But I'm in Gr. 5, not the middle school modules.) Guess I'll have to make a phone call.:glare:
  19. I found them, but I have no idea how I got there, and I doubt that I could find them again!
  20. I'm glad to hear that it's not just me who is having trouble with this. Obviously, I need to spend more time becoming acquainted with the program, but I don't appreciate having to spend HOURS at it.:banghead: I have just about decided to mostly do the workbook and not mess with assigning lessons, etc., but I can't even find a teacher's guide so I can make certain that I'm getting the right answers. I really wish I could just send it back!! :cursing:
