  1. I was thinking the same thing, why so expensive. Then I looked on the website and see you can get Ipad apps of the books. I'm just going to do that. At $2.99 an app, that is a whole lot cheaper for the same material.
  2. Yes, that is exactly what my son does. He knows it one day and the next does not. He guesses a lot as well. I don't know where to take him to get testing done. Any suggestions? I tried one of the links someone posted on this thread but there was no one in my whole 100+ mile radius.
  3. The only thing he has been evaluated for is speech in which he does have issues but they are not very bad and he has improved greatly. He does struggle in handwriting, spelling, grammar, and comprehension. They only thing he is really at level on is math. He is actually a little ahead with it. He started out in public school and was taken out during 1st grade so I never really started a phonics with him, just picked up with the early readers and started AAS. He does know all the sounds, but forgets to do the blends most of the time.
  4. We have done AAS 1 & 2 and he does great with that but when if comes to reading what he has learned, he just doesn't get it. We have done a ton of I Can Read books also. He can read the book one day and the next day act like he has never seen the book before in his life and miss every word. He has always been a slow learner and it takes telling him over and over again to sink in. It may just be maturity, I don't know. My 9 year old son has always been way above level in reading. I also have a 5 year old that has just started learning to read and she will soon be passing him up. I know that is bothering him and he told me he wants to read big books like his brother. I feel bad for him.
  5. I need help with my son who will be 8 in June. He is reading at a K level and I can't seem to get him any further. He guesses at words instead of sounding them out, doesn't want to try very hard, and gives up too easily. Any suggestions on what to try, books for him to read, incentives, or something to get him at a higher level would be appreciated.
  6. This was posted in a thread earlier today: http://www.hopeforhomeschool.blogspot.com/search/label/Curriculum Hopefully this will help.
  7. I want to thank everyone so much for all your help.
  8. If you look up Jessica Lamontagne on facebook she has Alpha for sale as well as the blocks. She is asking $80 plus shipping.
  9. Oh goodness, I am so confused about all this. I want less teacher involved but will still be there to help. I want to start the program and also do the Ancient History-Based Lessons. So what do I need to buy? Thanks so much.
  10. Hi, I recently purchased the Asus Transformer Prime and did love everything about it, my only problem was that I was so limited on educational apps. I guess it depends on what you are wanting to use it for. For our family, I was wanting the educational aspect so we took the transformer back and got the Ipad 3. There is an app you can download on the Ipad to allow flash. I have no regrets in switching and am loving my Ipad3. We did get the 64gb so I am not having memory issue. You can always save things to the cloud. Hope that helps.
  11. Thanks for the replies. I have requested to join the Yahoo group, just waiting approval. I was looking at the chart this morning and was wondering if I could do TWSS with Ancient History-Based Lessons since that is what we will be studying next year in History. Would this work for a 3rd and 4th grader?
  12. So I have been searching for a writing and grammar program for my oldest boys age 9 and 8. I seen IEW mentioned and have been checking it out. My question is where do I start and what all do I need. I like the Fix-It! Grammar book, and they have some cool theme based books, but I am not sure what all to buy. My boys will be entering 3rd and 4th grade. My 4th grader is above reading level and my 3rd grader is below if that matters. Thanks for all your input. p.s.: Any thoughts or experience with this program would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  13. There is a great For Sale Forum on this website that I use and also different facebook groups that allow people to post and sell curriculum. Other than those, I would just do a google search for used homeschool curriculum. I know there are several out there.
  14. I went with Spectrum Test prep. Haven't used them yet but I did some research and decided on them. This is my first time testing. Also, was able to find pdf for them. Sorry can't be of more help.
  15. My reason was it is a "Been there, done that" sort of thing. Went last year, so I know what all is there. Now I do my shopping online and try to buy used. I don't have a large sum of money to go to a convention and buy all my curriculum. I have to buy a little at a time.
  16. Have you looked at the series "Meet The Site Words"? They have books and dvd's. http://www.amazon.com/Meet-Sight-Words-1-Animation/dp/B000UIPJIK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334413019&sr=8-1

Zoomy Handheld Digital Microscope http://www.learningresources.com/product/teachers/shop+by+grade/kindergarten/zoomy--8482-+handheld+digital+microscope.do?sortby=& I'll stop at that for now. My kids love the Zoomy, Primary Science Lab, and the Mix & Measure set. We don't have the other items but I would like to have them. My kids age range is from 3-9 so these items stretch a wide range. Have fun shopping and let us know what cool things you decide on.
  18. I am going through the same exact issue with my 5 year old girl right now. I was afraid to ask about switching to sight words as I know a lot on here are against them, but that is how my oldest learned when in the school system and my 5 year old has the same learning style as him, so I think I will try that with her and put off AAR for now.
  19. You might want to do a search on the board. There have been previous discussions on how people use a Kindle for homeschooling. It can be done and can be successful. My older sons, age 9 and 7, have a Kindle and use it all the time so as long as you have a good cover, it wouldn't be too fragile. We have the Kindle Fire, you can read lots of free books, download educational apps, watch videos, access the internet, download pdf files, scan workbooks and download them to the Kindle for your child to work, etc. Just do a search and hopefully you will find the info you need. Good luck.
