  1. My dd has a tutor and online class now, so she no longer uses it. We found it so helpful, however, that I still use Pimsleur for myself. I buy mine on Audible with credits. Sometimes the Pimsleur units have been buy one get one free.
  2. Wouldn't this depend on what you're doing? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying. Are you saying people in science related fields have no need for other languages and/or wouldn't benefit? If so, I disagree. I also disagree that everyone on the job will speak English. Once again, it depends on what type of science we are discussing. There are so many fields! I've seen the question asked in a room of scientists and various languages were called out.
  3. This is the conclusion we've come to as well. Even my dd has started commenting on the AP classes her friends are taking. We have had many discussions about the topic lately and have concluded it doesn't seem to be the path my dd wants to take. If it closes doors down the road, so be it. She would be closing doors right in front of her in the present if she takes the AP path in the near future. She sees the choices some of her friends have made and is pretty sure she wants to make different ones. Dual enrollment will most likely be a better fit.
  4. Thanks, Derek! I agree, it's good to have the information available for others. I'm glad you responded. Thanks, also, for helping find an answer to my first question.
  5. My daughter plans to major in a science related field as well. She has already begun to use her Spanish in a small, but real way. I think it depends on what area of science your daughter is interested in and where her work may take her. Japanese might be the best bet in some fields, Spanish in others. I'm not sure there is a best answer - lots of variables at play...
  6. Thanks so much for the detailed reply. I appreciate your openness. It sounds like Wilson Hill's goals and values are not in line with ours, which has made my decision easier. Wilson Hill has been a success for at least a few posters on this board. Perhaps your reply will be helpful to others as well. It's good so many options exist. Thanks, again. ETA: See update downthread...
  7. I wonder if the age and type of student might play a part in the chemistry lectures reactions. A 15-year-old advanced science student is different from a young or struggling student. I don't think the chem course was aimed at the former. I think this is even mentioned in the course book. My daughter was 12 when she started the chemistry lectures, and she has enjoyed them. We've found them beneficial as a supplement since she was only at a beginner's level when she started them. Watching them a couple years from now would be a different story. I will add that my daughter likes chemistry. That may make a difference as well.
  8. Oh, I'm just doing whatever you decide.... I'm leaning toward using the Duke TIP materials because I like Jurgensen better. I am also a little hesitant to enroll in two DO classes. What if the set-up isn't a good fit? I think I'm looking for an online class that includes all grading, or I would rather just do it all myself. I like the support materials with the TIP program and that it has assignments already broken down. It's my understanding there are some computer graded components with TIP, but she won't have a teacher at all. Is that correct, or am I confused? Another plus of just using the TIP program is going at her own pace. Did you buy the solutions guide from the publisher?
  9. Just to make sure I understand...the parent will be responsible for some of the grading? I think I would want to just do everything at that point. Maybe I'm too all or nothing, but if I'm paying for a class, I don't want to be grading the work....hmm....
  10. How does this work? Are the students expected to participate in the prayer? I'd also love to hear from secular or non-Christian homeschoolers who have taken classes with Wilson Hill.
  11. How many students are in the Wilson Hill class? What time of day are the classes offered? Do you get a choice of class days/times? Hope you don't mind all the questions!
  12. When we moved, we made the decision to deal with a commute in order to still be surrounded by a bit of the woodlands we love. Now we have the best of both worlds - toads, salamanders, and turtles in the yard and scientists, labs, and other opportunities only a Great Course lecture commute away.
  13. I'm a frequent Homeschool Tracker drop-out. I keep thinking that this time I'll make it work. It's not happened yet - even after around 5 years of trying. On the other hand...Homeschool Planet was set up in minutes and changed our world. My dd loves that she has her own login. She also likes that she can choose her background and which type of daily quote is displayed, etc. I think it all comes down to what you're looking for. Homeschool Planet has everything we need and nothing we don't. (Or if it does, it's not intrusive in any way!)
  14. I've read conflicting information about the geometry classes. Some posts give the impression that parents are required to grade the proofs. When I read the website, that doesn't seem to be the case. Would anyone care to share experiences? I'm trying to decide between Derek Owens (Jacobs 3rd edition) and Duke Tip Geometry (Jurgensen). My daughter plans to take physics through Derek Owens in the fall. The DO geometry and physics combo seems to be popular. I would be grateful to hear thoughts and experiences from those who have used both. Thanks! ETA: I've added Wilson Hill to the title since I'm now considering it as well.
  15. This sounds similar to the situation we were in. We moved. It was not without risks and not without some unexpected happenings and difficulties. In the end, it has been worth it many times over. Our lives have been enriched immeasurably.
  16. How does this work? How do you not give grades? Do you mean the classes will be outsourced, or is there a commonly accepted way to leave grades off the transcript?
  17. How intense were his extra-curricular activities and how many hours a week did he spend on them? I'm planning 9th grade and trying to get different perspectives. 40 credits. That seems like quite a number of credits... Maybe its not, though....
  18. What a relief! Apparently we're all set with this high school business... We've got the bolded in spades! Oh wait - you probably weren't referring to the kind of drama that goes on around here... ;) ETA: Thank you for the detail in your post Margaret! I've always wondered how your children ended up on their various paths. So interesting to read the background info!
  19. For the record, I wasn't directing that at you, so much as using it as a starting point to wax lyrical about my own neurosis... ;)
  20. That's only two. Amateur. Think of all he missed.... ;) I wonder how our personalities play into our perceptions of things... the glass half-empty vs half-full....all the great we do vs all the great left undone...
  21. And there's the rub... Who's to say his life is any better now? Who's to say there isn't a path that would be even better than this one, but he'll never be exposed to it because of his math focus? Who knows what he is doing in the other realities of this multiverse? ;) That's what gets me. There is not enough time to do all my so called non-negotiables, let alone have exposure to all the things I find worthy of being explored. Then, of course, there are the things I don't even know about, so I can't even begin to know how worthy they are...no wonder I don't sleep at night...
  22. If this is the case, I would consider carefully the student's reasons for attending. That's quite a chunk of change for a toss up of teachers. If she is going mainly for the camp experience, a chance to live on campus, or to meet new people, that's one thing. If her goal is to study with an expert in the field, I would want some clear answers. The first year my dd was interested in the camp aspect. Now that she is older and there are so many options, we've become choosier with time and money. She is first and foremost interested in what the class has to offer. The camp experience is just a fun bonus. When we decide on camps, knowing who will teach the class is vital. To others it may not matter. :)
  23. You might want to check who will be teaching the classes she is interested in. I wish we had done this. The classes are not always taught by those with specialties in the area of the class. You might be surprised by some of the teachers. This might not be the case for Center. I do know it will be the first thing I check if my dd ever decides to attend.
