  1. Does anyone know the answer to this: Can I reproduce pages in a study guide workbook that was included in a Teacher's Resource kit? This was originally in a box that a teacher received (for Spielvogel's The Human Odyssey). Inside my Teacher's Wraparound Edition, I see the box described, but there is only one mention of reproducing maps, which was okay. (The company, West Educational Publishing is no longer in business so I cannot email them to ask permission.) I believe that teachers were able to reproduce for all their individual students (not the whole school), but I see nothing inside the book to say this. It only says, "All rights reserved". There is no copyright date. I'm assuming the teacher knew she or he could copy the pages so there was no copyright date for these add-ons. I ask this because I wanted to use some of the pages (probably 1/4) and then resell the book as a whole WITH the rest of my set. Thanks for any help with this! :)

  3. I don't see why it wouldn't 'count'. After all, there are audio books that many a student uses. I think my husband read out loud to our son until he was 16 (my son, not my husband!) :D Of course, our state doesn't require what you have to deal with. Maybe you could contact a local homeschooling group and ask them. We have a big state hs organization here; you probably have one where you live too.
  4. Thanks, Julie (and Jane!), this site is fun to look through. Now, to find all the time to actually utilize it. :001_smile:
  5. Hey, that's okay. :001_smile: And your post did accomplish something; I just started an account with them so maybe I'll still get the sale notification. I will get any others though so thanks again!
  6. I went on their site to check this out and could only find where some of them are on sale for 70%. Maybe there's special coupon code? Thanks!
  7. Thanks for posting this! That little coupon could save a ton of $ for someone here....maybe me. ;)
  8. I went over to Donna Young's site and downloaded the schedule and the cool bookmarks. I had known about her site many moons ago, but had forgotten as of late. Thanks for reminding me! Three down....guess I don't really need to place an order afterall. :)
  9. Well, I just found Saxon's Algebra Solutions for a bit less used so that is crossed off the list. :) And I looked over the Artistic Pursuits book that I do have better and I'm not sure it's right for us....so, I'll be skipping the other one. Two down.... I really wish their catalog had color pictures of everything they sell. Could you imagine what THAT would cost to print?! And it would be 5 phone books instead of one. :D
  10. I have a Wish List going and want to make sure I'm not missing anything that I 'need' ;) and thought it might be fun to share. :) Here's mine ~ 007774 Saxon Algebra 2 Solution Manual $25.95 010189 Artistic Pursuits Book 2 Junior high $38.95 031887 Daily Lesson Plans for Apologia Biology $6.15 002613 Human Anatomy Coloring Book (2) $6.50 038486 Quick Study for French book $3.75 012132 Shining Company $5.95 003887 Traditional Logic I Key $1.75 003386 Traditional Logic I Text $26.25 I included the item numbers and prices, but don't feel you need to do that if the info isn't handy. Thanks!
  11. Thanks for asking about this! I just viewed the demo and it was very cool. $30 is very reasonable to avoid the stink and mess. I do believe my dd will much prefer this to the real thing. Biology here we come! :)
  12. Update: Sorry, I didn't read your original post correctly. In regards to your question, for us, the solution manual was enough, but everyone is different. As you can see by just these two replies. Hopefully, someone else will chime in still. :)
  13. Okay, I see. That makes sense. Thanks again for this thread; it's got me to thinking more about writing for next year. :) And Rhondabee ~ Very funny! I'm sure IEW appreciates your 'forgetfulness'!
  14. Just to be understanding this right, the basis for a 8 sentence paragraph is the following: 1. Topic sentence 2. A relevant quote from a resource 3 and 4. Commentary by the student on the quote and its meaning 5, 6, and 7. Another quote and then two more sentences of commentary 8. A restatement of the topic sentence Is this for every paragraph? That's a lot of quotes. Maybe I'm not understanding this right, which is quite possible!
  15. I went to that thread and was wondering which post you were referring to. Was it the one by the tutor? :) Update: Was that the Homeschool Connection link?
  16. Yes, I think you need the solution manual in paper form. I didn't purchase both originally, just getting the CDs, regretting it later. Our scenario: My dd and I are doing Algebra at the dining room table. She does the problem and asks if it's right. Well, the computer is in the other room (along with her distractions) so to have to get up, go into her bedroom, pull up the CD and then find the solution, is WAY too much time spent. To have the solution manual in hand is way better for us. ALSO, and I posted this in another thread this morning, having those solutions is very tempting for our young students. I wish they were on a separate CD. And I know of only one time this year where we actually had to go and look at a solution to understand it better. (I have the solution manual for Alg. I that I had to buy later when it became clear I needed it) That is just our situation, yours may be different. But I hope this helped some in your decision!
  17. You're welcome! Glad to have helped. And yes, this is one cool forum. :D
  18. Art Reed's videos are highly regarded here on this forum (http://www.homeschoolwithsaxon.com/). You do see the teacher with this one. That would be my choice, but my dd likes the 'white board/no teacher to look at it' arrangement. We also did Algebra 1 with Saxon Teacher. Not sure if I would recommend it though. It is basically the textbook in video form talked through by a grandmotherly sounding lady. We have looked at it a few times when we didn't want to do the lesson ourselves (I have a headache or am just tired). BUT it takes a LOT of extra time. I usually paraphrase the lesson for my dd, but the lady on ST does the whole thing. But, then if you are out of picture and it's only your student doing the lesson, then ST would be good for that. Just be careful about how you allow use of these CDs....the solutions are there (not on a separate CD) and that can be very tempting to look at. :glare: The sample for Algebra 2 revealed to us that we would NOT like to listen to that woman all year long. Very annoying voice. So, be sure you listen to a sample if at all possible. I don't know anything about Teaching Company, but I would assume it doesn't follow the text you are using, but you could skip around if needed. There is also DIVE to consider, but you can't resell those. Good luck in your search!
  19. Thanks for posting this! I was always under the impression that each subject should take 45 - 60 minutes to count for that day. If it is a textbook, then that book has to be finished (or 3/4 of the way at least) to count for that credit. Maybe I'm wrong? That has happened a time or two. ;)
  20. Our local college's dual credit course that many home schoolers do here in MN uses Spielvogel's Western Civ. It is completed in ONE semester! That makes my head spin just writing it out.
  21. Human Odyssey (pub 1999) student text 0-314-20561-6 teacher wraparound edition 0-314-20562-4 Western Civ (4th edition) Part 1 0-534-60007-7 Student Guide 0-534-60011-5 Part 2 0-534-56837-8 Student Guide 0-534-56843-2 I went to Amazon to check these numbers and got nothing. THEN, I went to one of my favorite sites, http://www.bookfinder.com/?src=google-bf&gclid=CMHAvYKhs4cCFR5ESAodCV0IKA, entered the ISBNs and a bunch showed up, some even on Amazon! I clicked on the link and there they were. Very strange. If you haven't used Bookfinder yet, you will be amazed. Good luck in your search!
  22. Thanks for the suggestion, Lori D. Use both books, hmmmm. I do like WC's clean text without all the teacher stuff. And I do see that it is good to get at least some of Eastern civ, so maybe a balanced approach would work for us. I know I lean toward the WC text, but my dd likes the other one better. She tells me that she wants to 'just learn all the history she can'. :) 3 years to go through the book. I was looking at 2 years here, adding in lit along the way. We've always used Sonlight so we are used to lots of books. But Sonlight is not working for us in high school so here I am, looking to change things up. Change is good! :D
  23. I have both of these. My question is, which one to use? I looked in the index in WC and there were only 3 references to India and China. Three. And they were very brief sentences. I like that WC is fuller and richer for all the main WC topics...Greece, Rome, etc., but wish they had at least something in there about these other areas, but of course, those areas are NOT WC. :001_smile: I have the study guides to go with this too; can't see doing it without those. Wonderful test material and essay questions. For me, Human Odyssey has TOO much on those other cultures, but I do have the teacher's edition and really like how it has all the answers. It's just so heavy! I'm thinking of having it cut in two. Wonder how much that would cost? Good luck deciding.
  24. I've been wondering when or if I would get a catalog this year. Good to know they are being delivered. Maybe I'll get mine soon. Is this the regular high school sale catalog?
  25. My 15 yo dd and I just came back from a walk. As we came to the park, I saw the soccer team out there practicing and I asked her if she didn't want to go to high school so she could be part of all 'that'. She laughed and said, "No, not really". So, I'm feeling okay about it, but still kinda sad that she was on the outside of all 'that'. We walked a bit further down the road and came upon quite a different scene. There were teens outside of a house, many older boys and two girls. I tried not to stare, but seriously, these young women had some serious wardrobe issues. Short dresses, clingy tank tops, and the highest heels I had ever seen. They were standing there trying to shoot a basketball without falling over in those shoes. Wow, all I could think of was the mom of that house. Was she the mom of one of the boys or one of the girls? Either way, it was sad to me that that was acceptable. My ds would have been embarrassed seeing that. Glad he didn't. But, I'm glad I did (and my dd). So, we will continue as we are, outside of all 'that'. :D
