  1. Thanks. I think we will try to do it in one year then switch over like you suggest. :)
  2. I am trying to decide if I should use Algebra & Trig by Foerster for one year or 2. Veritas Press splits it up into 2 years calling the first year Algebra 2 and the 2nd year Precalculus. Kolbe academy used to do this but now uses the first half of the book for one year then the next year they switch over to Foerster's new Precalculus book. I don't know of a video course with the new Precalculus book and it is nice to have the DVD teacher with the whole Algebra & Trig. Has anyone had experience with either of these 2 books and what worked for you? Thanks. Angela
  3. Thanks for the website referral. Looks like he teaches it all in one year. I ordered the test book but is was overwhelming to me. It included so many tests (49 I think) and they instruct you to choose what you want. I just returned it today. We start in the fall so I haven't tried the chapter tests yet.
  4. I have bought the Foerster Algebra & trig classic book, solutions manual, tests and Math without borders CD to go along with it. Now I realize the syllabus/assignments are not included and I can't seem to find them. Does the teacher edition have them included? Also, I have heard the trig portion is being replaced with the precalculus book by Foerster but there is no CD lessons to accompany it. Trying to decide what to do. Thanks.:)
  5. We are studying the Greeks and Romans in Omnibus next year. Are any of you editing the content as you read some of these books or how is this handled? I was looking though Aristophanes, The Clouds and thinking there is no way I could read this to my kids. I love Omnibus and the way each book is discussed but I am afraid what it will do to their minds/hearts. Thanks.
  6. I listened to some of the Grote lectures at http://www. languages.uncc.edu/classics/file/wheelock . They sound very helpful. We will be ordering this. Thanks for the info.
  7. This is great. Thank you both for your help. Is the Grote lecture the $550 class or is this something different.
  8. Has anyone used both of these? I wasn't sure if we should read the whole chapter in the Wheelock's text one day, then do the whole chapter in Grote, then the Wheelock's workbook or is it better to do some of each daily. Thanks for all your help.
  9. We used Omnibus 1 last year and only got half way through it because I added sections from Abeka history to it. I plan on using Omnibus 1 and Omnibus 4 next year (ancients)for my 9th grader as we study Greeks and Romans. I plan on making a list of all the classic books we read and studied in Omnibus to show the college. I think any college would be impressed by the literature in Omnibus.
  10. I have all the books for Wheelock's latin (book, workbook, Grote's) except for a syllabus. Has anyone used the syllabus from Mother of Divine Grace and did you like it? Was it worth the money? How quickly does it move? I want to do 20 chapters this year. Thanks. Angela
  11. I'm new to the WTM Forum. What do all these abbreviations mean? dd, ds, dc, etc.
  12. I appreciate everyone's feedback to my question. I think that different homeschool teachers approach classical education from different perspectives and with different inner motivations. I still have two primary questions: 1) Why hasn't someone published their lesson plans and curriculum plan? It could really encourage a struggling homeschool parent or parent who wants to pursue the classical approach but is lost in how to get it all organized. 2) What is the end goal here? I believe it is to teach our children to think critically. But, will this approach somehow also give our kids a better chance at a scholarship or entrance into the school of their choice. BTW, my wife is checking out the Great Books products, so thanks for the tip. Matt
  13. Does reading a book to your high school student count as them reading it? Our 9th grade son has to read books and list them on his transcript. Will it count if my wife read its out loud? What if we get two copies and she reads a page and he reads a page? Matt
  14. My wife homeschools our 2 kids (12 and 14) following TWTM philosophy and curriculum plan. Now that our oldest is entering 9th grade, it seems that compiling the curriculum is the hardest ever and the time commitment required by my wife the most she's ever had to give. She is immersed in it and her understanding is light years ahead of mine, but I'm trying to support her more than ever. My primary concern is -- with most other curriculum packages, the homeschooling teacher receives lesson plans that outline "use this book and these pages on this day" and it's all very organized. But, with the classical TWTM approach, my wife has to create her own lesson plans and it's a tremendous amount of work. I see no other homeschooling mother in our church putting this much work into preparing the school year. I've asked her, "Why is it that so many people are involved in TWTM approach, but no one has created lesson plans for each grade that specifies exactly what to do each day, using which books and resources?" I understand that each teacher has options for texts and resources, but there are thousands of homeschoolers who have been doing this for years.
