  1. My oldest started D in 3rd and finished the series. He loved it and it worked well for him. My dd tried but we didn't even finish C, it just made no sense to her at all. She loved R&S spelling and did it through the 6th grade book. Once I realized that it was okay if they did different things we were okay. That is part of why we are home after all, to give each one what they need.
  2. My son's scout troop seals their meals in foil packets, freezes them, then just tosses them in the coals of the fire to cook. Anyone who wants to add something that might leak puts their packets in a plastic bag for carrying. He says they are usually still somewhat frozen at dinnertime, teenagers make large packets! They've made some really amazing meals this way from recipes they find online.
  3. I also am interested in hearing more about this program. I checked out their website and had no problems viewing it. I think I will sign up for their free seven day trial. As an aside for sixglides: I knew you were on here somewhere, your name just gave you away. Shouldn't that be eightglides now neighbor?
  4. It was a great day here! Last day for the science classes I teach and my own dc have only a week or so of math to finish up! Dh came home early and we went out to supper (by ourselves!) then strolled through Home Depot and Quality Supply. That man is so romantic! And now he's on vacation for a week, we're going to hang drywall! It doesn't get much better, and I'm really not kidding.
  5. Here you would be fined. The longer the delay, the larger the fine. You would also be charged interest on any amount owed.
  6. I have a Samsung black & white laser and it averages about 2.5 cents a page. I buy lots of paper when I find a good deal and use the Samsung toner cartidges. The name brand cartidges cost about 3 times as much, but after many tries of knockoffs and refills I've found that they really are cheaper per page as they last much, much longer.
  7. Finishing off last summer's canned goods now. Nothing is growing here yet but weeds, so I made dandelion jelly last weekend. Waiting (not patiently at all) to plant my garden.
  8. I returned some things last year and had a refund in about two weeks. Mine was just a credit back to my creditcard, maybe the method matters? Hopefully yours will go quickly.
  9. Finishing up our 7th year, doesn't seem like that long! (Ok, some days it seems a lot longer.)
  10. Dd and I did this when she was 11, it was wonderful! I made sure she knew what the general idea was before we left so she had an opportunity to think about things ahead of time. It was an amazing weekend. What a great way to start that change in relationship as they get older. It's almost 3 years ago now and she still comes to me with questions, comments, etc. I think it is a great way to really be sure they know that they can bring their questions to you (about anything!) and trust that you will listen and try to help them through. Be sure you have everything prepared ahead of time. I had labeled paper sacks with the things I needed for each activity. Even the activities that sounded silly ahead of time we really enjoyed. Even the ones that didn't really work, we had balloon issues, gave us great memories. It's great for the child, but you will be so blessed by this time together!
  11. I had a GS named Kodiak, he was a great guy! We called him Kody most of the time. Currently have lab named Mephibosheth, we call him Phib and it really phits him.
  12. We're about 1/2 mile from a river and osprey often leave us nice sized fish; in the yard, on the roof, on the car,... We have also watched them flop out of the large buckets the helicopters use to scoop up water from the river to dump on wildfires nearby. At least we've seen it happen, unexpected random fish would be quite disconcerting!
  13. My dd has one peg lateral and the other is very small. She's the only one in the family with this issue. She is almost 14 now and just finally lost her last baby tooth so we can start phase II of the braces. She will have braces and then they will build up both teeth to be the right size. It is supposed to be a permanent fix, the teeth are tiny but they have good roots and strong enamel so they should last. At least his teeth are coming in, we pulled the baby teeth because the laterals were coming in sideways and needed to be pulled down so they wouldn't hit the front teeth roots. She was in phase I braces for almost 2 years and the ortho finally took them off to give her a break, the laterals were still not all the way in. The dentists and orthos are pretty good at this now days, so I'm sure it will turn out great for him.
  14. I don't know how this is going to work out but I wanted to speed mine up a bit too. I went to the College Board SAT website and got practice prompts from previous SAT's. I give them one sheet of notebook paper and 25 minutes to write a response. It's been really interesting, I have one ds who will write as little as possible, actually takes pride in making his answer as concise as possible. Will spend an amazing amount of time looking up more precise words to use as few as possible to convey his message. Another that I work with could use six pages to say hello. Both seem to be making progress towards meeting me in the middle, in a reasonable amount of time. I haven't begun to carry this idea over to their regular writing assignments. I think I just want them to see that it is possible for them to change before I push it too far.
  15. my 9th grader/another I'm teaching: Saxon Alg II/Alg I Chemistry Rod & Staff Grammar Henle Latin Omnibus III Argument Builder (1st semester) Typing (they still can't) Choir Baseball of PE/Dance class for PE Cooking and Nutrition co-op class (1st semester)
  16. I'd say keep trying, but be patient. My dd was scared to go under water also. When she was 8 she told her swim instructor that she was not going to put her face in the water and she didn't care if she was in level one until she was 40! We told her that she had to take lessons until she could swim across the pool, far enough to reach safety. She didn't do it until she was about 10 1/2! But she can swim now and likes to play in the pool, although she prefers to be able to reach the bottom.
  17. Perhaps you should check his "teeth". A friend had the same problem a few years ago and it turned out that her dh was harboring bacteria and "reintroducing" it after the antibiotics. Don't know if this is the case, but if it doesn't stop soon it could be worth checking out.
  18. I agree, the numbness should pass as swelling goes down. I do find it odd that your doctor doesn't recommend PT, maybe just not yet? I've been through this more times than I like to count and always needed some PT to get muscle tone back after the cast/boot. But it didn't usually start until I was out of the boot. Hope that helps.
  19. After reading these posts I really feel like a lurker! I've been at home with my 2 dc for 7 years now! I didn't realize it had been that long until just now! I have a 15yo ds in 9th grade and a 13yo dd in 7th. Where did the time go! We have been classically homeschooling all along, started out with TWTM all the way but have veered off to Veritas Press some, although the ideas are still the same. Only 2 dc that live here, but I teach science and math classes for homeschoolers and tutor several in a few different subjects, so we might as well have a revolving door. Maybe I'll find something to contribute now and then. I have been very greatful for all the wisdom I have found here. Keep up the good work ladies!
