  1. You know, Michelle, you bring a lot of things to my mind here. I said I was afraid of snakes, and I am. Then I mentioned that I am afraid of escalators, and I am. I cannot fly and so I will probably never get to travel. I cannot drive on I40 and so to get to Memphis I must map out an alternate route. Or stay home. I am afraid of meeting new people because I am sure they will hate me. I am a mess.
  2. My mom is like you! And I am terrified of escalators so if we go somewhere together we either have to use the stairs together or she goes up the escalator and I find an elevator and we meet at the top!
  3. I am not the least bit rational about it, either. A snake slithering across my sidewalk can keep me housebound for hours after the snake has gone to terrorize someone else. After working hard all spring on my front flowerbed I let the whole thing go to weeds for the rest of the summer after I pulled a clump of grass and found a snake wiggling between my feet. My heart races and I cannot concentrate when I see a snake. Since I live in Tennessee, this greatly handicaps my enjoyment of the outdoors. I dream of living somewhere with a much smaller snake population.
  4. In searching for information about Clorox green I came upon similar information. I don't like seeing small companies swallowed up by big companies. I wonder what motivates a company like Burt's Bees to sell to a company like Clorox? I wonder what motivated American Girl to sell to Mattel? I wonder what motivated The Body Shop to sell to L'Oreal? Is it just about money? Some of these small companies seem to be selling to companies that are opposite what they claimed to be their core beliefs. Maybe I am just too idealistic.
  5. I only use written exercises when I feel like they need to work on a concept more. My seventh grader is doing more and more of the written exercises simply because the concepts in the R&S 7 are tough and need more work to cement them in his flighty 12 year old brain. Like Krista, we diagram at the white board the vast majority of the time. We do not spend a lot of time on grammar, if they understand it we move on.
  6. Has anyone bought any of these products? Did you like them? I would really like to find a line of non-toxic cleaning products that is affordable. I have not been pleased with homemade concotions, no matter how many formulas I try. Seventh Generation does not fit into my budget. This new line looks promising and affordable, but it is put it by Clorox and so I am cautious about how earth-friendly it would really be.
  7. I just finished Country of Men and this morning I started The Saffron Kitchen. All part of my 888 project.
  8. My husband does the repeating thing. I always thought it just went along with his stutter/stammer issues. He will repeat whole sentences or parts of sentences to himself. He especially does it when he is saying something that he thinks is funny. I ignore it now, but have to admit I found it unusual when we were dating.
  9. Does anyone know what, if anything, I might be doing wrong. According to the shopping cart my debit card went through without any problems, but the music is not downloading. I keep clicking the download button and nothing happens. I NEED this music right now, I am trying to load my doodlebug's new mp3 player so I can give it to her tomorrow for her birthday. If you download music from WalMart, could you help me? I will add this to the list of things I hate about WalMart.
  10. Before you open a particular thread, try letting your cursor rest on the title of the thread. You should see a little box pop up with the first few lines of the first post. It might be enough to give you an idea of the content.
  11. I am busy with two books: Deep Economy (Bill McKibben) and The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon, a truly interesting fantasy/mystery. Um, the above is supposed to be in quotations as I was quoting Jane. Obviously I need some practice with the new forum. Jane, I am reading The Yiddish Policeman's Union as well! I picked it up on a whim at the library. I am not very deep into it yet, though.
  12. My 17 year old is reading Mark Twain's Humorous Stories and Sketches. I think she has also started reading The Nazi Officer's Wife since I just finished it and I was telling her about it. I think she is enjoying it. She took it off of her school shelf where it was waiting patiently for its turn to show up on an assignment sheet. I guess I won't need to assign it to her. She is really bad about getting into her literature before I assign it. What a bad girl!
  13. I have given myself permission. I have not yet asked my co-leader for permission! I am not afraid of the club folding. I used to be, because I started that club, many, many years ago. I felt like I had to keep it going. Mostly I am afraid of abandoning my friend and it all landing on her shoulders. And, by the way, this would have to be next year. I could never quit this year. Never.
  14. :):):):) I go off to a 4H meeting and come home and look what we have!!!! Thank you, you wonderful Peace Hill Press people!!!
