  1. I voted amused when I find myself doing something just like her. My mother is a strange woman I believe she wanted to be a good mom she just didn't know how. So, while they protected us they didn't know what to do with us. Most of my parenting is direct opposite of what she did. I want my children to be close to me and DH, not feel alone, and definately know that they mean more to me than outside people and things. *sigh* bittersweet memories
  2. Hi! Thanks for replying! And thanks for the info on how to get to the second section also!! I'd hate to have missed a used book vendor!! :D I was glad that the one price covered the whole convention also! I probably wouldn't of went at all if I had to pay for each part! LOL. I'm very excited if you can't tell. hehe. I have mapped out all of the sessions I'd like to go to, I'm going to try to sit through as many as possible since I'm just starting. I'm thinking of sending hubby off to the one's that I'd like to hear but weren't as of great importance as choice number 1 for whichever time. Did that make sense? heheh. Thanks again! ~S
  3. Hi! As I was reading the first responders response to your post, I was thinking, hey that's what I was going to write! Except I'd like to add/ask this: Do you cough when you're experiencing these symptoms? When I experience asthma troubles, it always includes coughing (for me! I suppose it can be different for everyone!) Coughing is almost a sure sign of allergy (or exercise or anxiety or any I suppose) induced asthma because your airways restrict, then they get inflamed & the cilia become overactive, therefore, making you feel like you need to cough. My opinion (for as much as that's worth, lol) you should see your PCP. They will tell you if you need to go the extra step to see an allergist. My PCP prescribes my rescue inhaler, but for my son, he sees the allergist, so I think it's different for everyone :) :D thanks for posting about something I actually know about! lol. haha!
  4. Thank you so much for replying! I'm so excited! And glad to hear that there is a possibility of discounted books lol! I have SO many books I'd love to just look @ to see if they'd fit but some are just too expensive to buy just to look at! Lol. So, I'm hoping some of the vendors there will have the books I'm itching to look through thx!
  5. And have you been before? Just trying toget a feel for it before we go. Is there dress code? We went to a different conference once and most people were dressed up, of course we were not, lol. I'm also thinking of purging my shelves of books that I'm not sure I'll use or could do without so I can have some extra money for the vendors there! Do they ever have things discounted at conventions or just full price? I'm so excited about going. We're probably going to be completely overwhelmed! Lol
  6. Hi! I'd just like to say that I'm grateful for all these posts. Most of my children will fall into the category of babies toddlers and my oldest is only soon to be 7 so I won't have the joy of trading of with older children so I can work with another child. We'll be just starting this summer and that has been the top concern for myself, DH, my mother and most everyone who knows us, how we'll get any schooling done. It's the main reason I'm starting him in on school after just a couple weeks of vacay I want as much time to accomplish the task as possible. I'm getting so nervous! 4 weeks left til we're done with PS!!
  7. Those of you who have issue with the doctrine have you looked at http://www.heartofwisdom.com I have gained a lot from this site as well as here. I do not know how they compare curriculum wise, I just know that what I've read so far fit my beliefs greater than anything else I've yet seen. I'm really new at all this too haven't even started yet. Lol. However, I did know that I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something I was possibly going to be changing a lot of. So, I guess take my reply with a grain of salt. I was really intrigued by the heart of wisdom site (as I was here) & see a lot of posts about people struggling with issues about curriculum not fitting in with their beliefs so nervously I threw the site out there :)
  8. I just wanted to pass along some **hugs** There's not a whole lot to say except just do what you have to do, and that's it. I had 3 pregnancies back to back (did you know it was possible to have more than one surprise baby. Lol. J/k!!). I woke up every morning wondering how I was going to make it through the day. All I can say is that it really helped to know I wasn't alone. So, hang in there your almost there & try to let yourself take it easy
  9. Yum! What a great idea for a thread! Have any of you tried 30 day gourmet cooking? Oh my gosh! It's saved me many a day! Like those breakfast burritos I make up a ton of them (just like McDonald's makes them) wrap them in a paper towel then in foil then I freeze it! DH reaches in the freezer, pulls one out removes foil. & pops it in the microwave they are great for dinner too.!.
  10. Thank you! We are aware of our CHEO thank you for telling me though! At this point I just feel torn about it because there are just a few weeks left. I could really go either way ya know? With just a few weeks left he wouldn't be missing all that much. But also a few more weeks won't kill him either lol. Ugh. I wish we'd just taken him out at Christmas time like my gut told me to, but it's too late for that now, so no use fussing about it now
  11. Ahh now see I didn't think about it that way at all! :). This morning he pulled a paper out that said at the top that the entire class was having trouble listening & keeping their hands to themselves & being respectful. So, this ds being my oldest & only one old enough for school I immediately wanted to pull him out before anymore corruption occurred. Thank you.
  12. Thank you ladies! Our 'problem' is that they want to do page after page but not finish them or do them entirely correct :) I appreciate your responses, I'm loving these books too!
  13. My post didn't really make sense did it? I'm so nervous about taking him out now, it seems silly with just a few weeks to go to just have him finish the grade out. Here are my questions. How do I take him out? We live in Ohio, do we have to do any extra testing if he is removed from school before completion of a grade? I just don't know how to go about it? Should I have him finish the year? What would you do? I mean he's not being a horrible kid but he's rushing through his work & bothering the other kids who aren't done. And he doesn't sound like he's being respectful of his teacher. I hope I am more clear now. Lol.
  14. Okay, so I've been dancing around this decision for months. Now, the answer seems clear, I am dragging my heels into the ground trying to stick it out til the end of the year. DS is having behavior issues about school since he knows he's going to be HS'd. He no longer wants to go to school & is very vocal about it. Mt issue is I'm afraid if I pull him right now that I'll have testing to do & have to teach all of first grade to him in a few weeks. I do realize how silly I sound but I,m nervous about any controversy I'm going to face. What issues would I face if I just took him out now? HELP! Please!
  15. Thank you so much! Without this board I would still be very much in the dark about homeschooling options & all the many different approaches to teaching my children. Really! I also want totake this chance tothank everyone who have responded to my *many* questions, I credit you all with my peace that I've finally come to with my curriculum choices. It's comforting to see both sides of a curriculum - the good & the bad. Thank you!
  16. How do you use this set? Do you use one book at a time until finished or do you do a couple pages out of each one? We're doing Bible & Adventures in Books right now but before we got to far I decided to ask how best to use it lol. Thanks!
  17. The sweeper sounds just like what I've been needing for our stairs & such. Thanks!
  18. Oh, wow! That's so great! I felt silly just emailing her out of the blue like that, but I swallowed my pride & did it anyway! :). Thank you!
  19. Oh wow thanks for the links, I'm definately going to check those out! Susan, what are some ways to decide if it's of good quality? I would love to find a decent old violin, as that is the only thing that has been recommended to me thus far (besides here that is!). Thank you all so much for your input so far! I'd love to hear even more :
  20. Prices on the rise makes this mama of 4 *thankful* for the blessing of being able to homeschool my children, enough land to grow as much of our food as possible, and finally mastering the art of making our own bread :)
  21. LOL Amy I immediately thought the same. Wouldn,t it be nice to have ol' Ronnie back :)
  22. Thank you! As of right now we don't really have a teacher. I have someone willing to show me the basics for now. I'm hoping that past that my 20+ years of piano & various other music experience will guide me along. At leastn until we see if it's a good musical match for us. Ideally, I'd like to learn violin myself while ds learns the basics of music & theory on piano. Am I crazy?
  23. I know nothing about violins but was thinking about purchasing one for myself & my ds. How do you pick a good one? How can you spot a cheap one that won't last long? Would you buy one from a pawn shop or where do you buy used instruments? I wasn't sure where to post this as it doesn't really pertain to curriculum :) thank you!
