  1. Just found this http://homeschoolwriting.com/ Anyone familiar with this one?
  2. With Writing Strands, IEW, CIRCE, Writing With Ease, etc...out there, how is one to decide what to use. What do you use and why?
  3. Winston Grammar? Frode Jensen's Grammar Land? Any good suggestions?????
  4. We are finishing up our second year hs'ing. My kids were public schooled where they were taught to read using whatever phonics or lack thereof...they are both superb readers though and can't get enough books. Daughter dear is a weak speller though and sonny boy is a great speller. It's the grammar of it all they both could use some help with, but then again, so could I with a refresher. I have spent the last two years de-public educating them  I am still trying to figure out what works honestly. It is mind boggling what curriculum options are out there. Honestly, I can't see myself spending $200 or more on something like Phonics Road regardless of whether it is a fabulous program or not. Not knocking it, just citing it as an example.
  5. See, I want to produce those types of people today. I would love for my children to be able to be well educated and knowledgable and certainly well spoken. Wouldn't it be nice if people didn't rape the English language anymore! I'm all for taking so-called words like 'yo', 'sup', 'my bad', 'fitty', and the like out of use. If my children so much as even think of using words like that, they feel the whack on the back of the head before I even need to do it. LOL!!! Maybe I am being absurd in thinking teaching my two children this way will have a HUGE impact on society, but a girl can dream can't she?
  6. Regardless of whether I can give an affirmative YES to any of your questions, wouldn't it be a fun challenge to try? We could all, all three of us, get a better grasp of grammar by using this program I would think. I mean the elementary book was used back in the late 1800's with who else? Elementary aged students. I would not however use the Revised Harvey's Grammar on my middle schooler until I felt he had a good grasp of what the elementary book attempts to teach. Heck, worst case scenario, we shelve it for a bit and try something else and go back to Harvey's later. Oh wait, I use it for myself while they use something else ;)
  7. I have a soon to be 9 year old and a soon to 12 year old. I am very old fashioned when it comes to education. I feel anything used prior to, oh say about 1900, seems to really have produced a highly intellectual class of people. People that know how to think and know how to find answers, know how to use the brain that is not just taking up space between the ears.
  8. Still trying to find a good grammar program as we enter our third year of hs'ing.
  9. Now I am against cutting off the spine myself, hate the idea of causing damage to a book mainly plus I will admit that I need to sell off the previous years items in order to buy the new years things and how could I possibly do that if I am selling an incomplete book so to speak... I do LOVE the idea though above of spiral binding them. VERY AWESOME idea!
  10. I'm not Catholic and am a Director with CC; I am quite pleased to see more of these types of educational mentoring/tutorial programs coming about for us homeschoolers. The fellowshipping amongst the children and parents is great and the quality of materials used is wonderful.
  11. Had never heard of it before this post so thank you for introducing me to another writing option. I was beginning to feel like IEW was the ONLY thing out there that might be worth anything. I had posted a couple weeks ago about the LOGOS School writing items by Matt Whitling and no one ever repsonded. I have a 3rd grader who hasn't really been introduced to much writing other than a workbook with prompts and a 6th grader who hates writing even more than vegetables :glare: Will be checking this out.
  12. Never heard of her or them but thanks for the info. Checking into it now.
  13. Is Elementary it or should you really consider going on with copywork through all of school? Your thoughts and ideas... Also, any good products or sites for copywork?
  14. Much appreciated coffeegal! I will do some rethinking of this venture.
  15. Gonna' try to refresh this thread because I am curious with the writing. I am seriously thinking of HO2 for 7th grader in fall who is not a strong writer, heck we hardly do any of it so he and I both need some work. Does the program actually delve into how to write or just give you the topic and expect you already have a student that knows how to do the writing?
  16. CC uses Veritas products but does a teensy bit of rearranging is all. You can easily do the Veritas timeline cards without using the CC Guide. The CC Guide is really designed for families that are part of a CC Community and use their program. If you plan on doing SOTW and Veritas cards then I wouldn't use the CC guide for again, it is designed to best be used as part of a CC Community where you will truly get the benefit of the entire guide and the way it was written.
  17. Yes and the company makes other kits as well. They are fun. Also check into this: http://potatochipscience.com/ Very good stuff to fill in gaps or just for fun.
  18. ROFLOL!!!! I love mom moments like those.
  19. R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey users here and LOVE it. Can't say enough good things about it. Go to Satori's profile and find the link to her blog. She has some AWESOME pics of her and Satori doing RSO. The blood experiment is very cool.
  20. :D:D:D:DWELCOME:D:D:D:D Read, read, and read some more then post, post, and post some more. Everyone here is quite helpful with curriculum questions and I have learned much in my short time here.
  21. :001_huh::001_huh::001_huh: I think this particular reviewer sat with a thesaurus and went to town writing that review. He/She has a very strong opinion of their opinion it seems.
  22. Looks interesting from the samples I could see of books on CBD. The pics used on the covers though are darn annoying lol. This is probably a very good use of, "Don't judge a book by it's cover."
  23. Curious with this thread because I bought a used copy from someone here of Biblioplan Ancients thinking I would use it for dd8 in the fall. Not so sure though now that I see it in hand. I think I got an old copy though too. Will be following this thread.
