  1. we're having 'issues' this evening. dd12 wants to use the computer. My usual answer is 'has all your work for today been completed?' As usual, she answers yes very quickly, even though when ever I actually check, I find things missing or not complete. This evening i decided to quiz on her memory verses from the last 3 weeks. She pouted, gave excuses, whined, cried, sulked and everything else she could think of. Her biggest argument was that it was my fault for not giving her a quiz in a while. You see, since I didnt quiz her, it was my fault that she over looked them on her weekly assignment sheets. So tonight DD/12 does not like hsing or the teacher. When she was in school she could sit and socialize a large part of the day. She was not one to remember to do work on her own but she was bright enough to come out 'ok' without doing much work. The new teacher/mom holds her accountable. It's something she's still not used to. So while I think she still likes to take the easy road I think she is progressing. A few months ago I posted a survey on here (at her request) to see if other kids could possibly 'like' hsing. At the time, she was still in an uproar about missing her friends. She was also very upset about having to do outlines and summaries. I do think today, that after 6 months of hs'ing she is becoming aware of the advantages of hsing. I wont say she 'likes' doing work but she wouldn't 'like' doing work if she were back in school either. She's now finally learned to do outlines and doesn't mind them. Summaries are no longer a bad word. She enjoys reading so much and does them cheerfully looking froward to getting to read more.
  2. wow, reading this thread is making me feel at home. after baby #2 i've relied a lot more on personal research and the mommy instinct. #1 went to EVERY scheduled visit and had ever vax, with the exception of chicken pox. She caught every cold that came by and an equal amount of ear infections. #2 went to 3-4 well baby visits before I got tired of being bulled. #3 was a home birth and was seen by my midwife who came back to to a check and only once with the ped. He didn't like the fact that I didn't get the vit K shot. I saved him the aggravation of dealing with me. :) #2 and #3 hardly ever get sick and have never had an ear infection. I have a friend from college that's now a pharmacist & we chat about issues but other than that I read about anything i have questions on. I kinda wish there was a group for those of us here that trust the mommy instinct. Then I remembered, that can be a touchy subject for some that are passionate on both sides. sigh... None the less... I'm glad to hear about so many of you. There just aren't many where we live now.
  3. i put a very light amt of crisco after every time I wash the pans. then I store them in the oven. So if when ever I cook with the oven a couple of empty pans are in there cooking as well.
  4. dd #2 was a very demanding nurser. I wanted to wean her at 2 1/2. Picture me tip towing around so as not to be chased :o I remember at one point I needed her to stop being so demanding so I had her count to 10 or 20 before nursing. She memorized anything to get to nurse. She ended up self weaing a couple of months ago at 3. I'm glad she got to do it when she was ready. I have an 18 month old still nursing that is not demanding at all. I'm sure she could give it up. at this point she just nurses before bed and when she wakes up. One cool thing is that neither of them were bottle babies. they went straight to cups. I dont even think the youngest had any thing to do with a bottle ever. I still have a medeal pump sitting in the closet. I keep debating if i should pump and freeeze for them to drink out of cups. I just never had the time. :(
  5. my dd is 12 as well. I had her take the SAT last year as a 7th grader. It gave me a good idea of where she is and some things we can do for the next year. I did sign her up for the johns hopkins CTY but the program cost is something we'll have to save a bit for. I think the bigest draw is 5 years of experience taking the tests. I'd like her to be in a position to get into schools as well as get offers for aid. I go back and forth on taking cc early. Today I'm thinking we may do science at the CC and writing on line. best of luck to to we're also military but DH just retired
  6. If you have other children/experience and feel your baby is healthy then I think you are ok. I'm on baby #3. She is 18 months and the picture of health. I've done everything I could to feed her natural healthy foods and there is limited exposure to chemicals or processed food or a family health history indicating things. #3 was my home birth baby and has only seen by a doc twice.
  7. wanted to say 'hi'. I'm also AA with biracials dds. :)

  8. Stephanie, It was not my intent to ask anyone to treat, dispense meds or give illegal advice. I apologize if my questions have offened anyone. I was simply looking to hear from cat owners about how to help a stray cat without a huge expense. No, I don't know the laws about feeding strays in this state, but If there were such a law here, my children would have owned more animals than I can count. It's probably not the best idea but my kids have a strong love for animals and I'm sure they could have far more harmful traits. I mentioned in an earlier post I did not think it was a good idea to negotiate with the vet. It was DD's idea and she may get such terrible notions from her parents unfortunately. :( Many times we encounter people that ask for or need help. When ever possible we try to do so. We don't have a lot to give right now but I'm a firm believer of playing it forward.
  9. thanks for sharing your story. wish I could rep you

  11. How do you know when God is telling you something or you're just not being rational? three years ago when i had dd#2 I felt led to leave a very lucrative career to be home with the new born and pre teen. I packed up the kids and moved to his last duty station where we now reside. Since then DH retired after 20 years active duty Army. The stress of deployment and fear of war took it's toll. Now he is a full time real estate agent. The market has gone soft but in this particular part of the country there are still people moving here and buying houses as they get military assignments to the area. We've been using savings to get the business going but several purchases have fallen through the last few months leaving us in a bind. My line of work is just not avail within a 90 mile radius of here. I've posted my resume but the only work here in this area would be around min wage and not enough to cover the commute and child care. I've prayed on it and i just don't know what to do. How can I REALLY know if this is what God wants for us or if I just made a terrible mistake anyone have any suggestions or prayers to share?
  12. thanks so much for the cat advice!

  13. I just called the vet in town. The receptionist said stray or not, they would not do anything without an exam. :( Her tone gave me the impression she was not open to hearing DD's offer to voulenteer. I also asked her about the shelters in the area. She said they try to find homes but they are not no kill. :( I'm looking at plan B either http://parazap.com/ or OTC dewormer? I did give him some probiotics (kefir) this morning. He eats almost anything.
  14. thank you sooooo much. I never thought we could ask to just do a stool test. my 12 yr old has always been an animal lover. She would bring home any and every animal she came across. There was one time I caved in and took a cat to a vet for her to get checked. The bill was well over $100 for the visit and all the tests. At the time I was working so I just moaned and paid the bill. Now that i'm not working I need to know up front what's involved. Cat doesnt look ill at all but he is thin. and DH has had to remove a few ticks. I will call today and see what the local vet's office says. thanks! life lesson: don't let your kids name animals you can't keep. :(
  15. can you tell me what brand you use? I think I may try that till we figure out the vet issue.
  16. We can see that he catches small animals as well. Would eating chimunks, rabbits,... cause worms? We tried to put a collar with a bell on him to give the other animals some warning but he seems to get it off while he's out.
  17. was it are really good deal? My kids get me up at that hour but I don't think you should call someone you don't know before 9 or after 9 at night. I know most papers usually charge by the line but you could try placing an ad iin craigs list and specify the hrs you accept calls on the item?
  18. Early in the summer a cat showed up at our door step and looked extremely friendly and extremely hungry. He just sat outside our door and every time we went in or out he was there. We initially thought he was someone’s pet and they would eventually find him. DD put up signs but there was no word of an owner. A week later we did get some food and put out a dish for him on the porch where he spent most of his time. Over the weeks the kids and the cat got really close. The 12 year old fell in love, he tolerated the 3 yr old and he seemed to have a special bond with the one year old. After a month or so he started slipping inside and would hang out in our kitchen for a couple hours at a time. Now it’s turned cold and he wants to stay inside. We got a litter box but noticed his stools seem very odd. They are very loose and smell like something is not right. I don’t know much about cats so I called my mom who said it sounds as if he might have worms. Now here is our dilemma. The kids love this cat and we simply can’t afford to take him to the vet. I tried to explain to my 12 yr old that he is very sweet but we just can’t afford any additional expenses right now. She immediately asked if she could contact a local vet and offer to volunteer to work in exchange for checking and treating the cat. I told her I didn’t think that was possible or else half of the people in town would be asking the same question. So I have to decide… should we take him to the pound? I’m not sure how that process works, if the animals get treated by a vet or if they are just destroyed? Is there anything we can do at home to help him? I looked on line and an article suggested that over the counter worm treatments just aren’t strong enough to work. Any thoughts or suggestions? thanks
  19. I left a 6 figure income 3 years ago when my middle child was born. You know it stinks that I don't have ANY money but I can't describe the joy I get from hugging my babies all day and home schooling my 8th grader. I feel a little worried when it comes to friends and family but truth be told they don't really have to understand. Most people probably don't even know how tight things are. Gifts this year to family and friends will be homemade soap. I think this is a better gift than any thing I could have purchased. I don't know what people will think but WE are very excited about our gifts.
  20. can you share that list? I contacted the cc here a few months ago about my 8th grader. I wanted to know if they had a policy for 9th graders? They said for the most part they take 11th and 12 graders. I really wanted to know if they would give her the same entrance/placement test they give to other students. I got the run around so i let it go. I think I really would like to look into her taking science there though.
