  1. Just wanted to repost this as I know this will be helpful for me as I plan my next child's quest into the ancients. This hive is great! Gretchen
  2. If you are still emailing this out, I would love a copy! Thanks so much for your work! Gretchen bgpaddock@gmail.com
  3. []I'm using Illuminations for High School Year One which is based on MOH 1 and includes Lit, Bible and other subjects. It's been a perfect fit for my 14 yods. You can see samples at www.brightideaspress.com This looks interesting but I can't get any of the samples to work on my computer:confused:. Anyone else having any troubles or is it just me. Thanks, Gretchen
  4. Me too. This sounds great! Any update as to how we can get a copy? Gretchen
  5. Just got the Classical Academic Press newsletter and they say the Art of Argument DVD is done and for sale. HTH. Gretchen I'm trying not to look at it because I know I'll want to buy it and we are already to busy in our day!
  6. Elena, It seems as if in some areas the memory work starts out easier - like shorter poems first or the abcs are before harder works. But mostly it is organized by topic in a logical way. You could do this on your own, but I have said that I would do that for a couple of years now and we never got to it.:( I recently read "The Core" and have looked into Classical Conversations alot, which has a lot of memory work. I like what they have to say ,but for my family, we are memorising things that we are studying about so that there is some context for it. So it was worth the money for me, plus there is enough stuff in there for many years. Gretchen
  7. I just received Andrew Campbell's "Living Memory" book. Wow! What a resource. I'm going through it now, trying to pick what I want us to memorize for this year. He mentions a notebook pages that you can download from Ragamuffin Rosies, but that website doesn't exist anymore. Does anyone have a copy of this or know where I can get it? :bigear: Thanks! Gretchen
  8. I was planning on using IEW US History writing program with my 13 yod. She thinks she is good at writing so doesn't want to do a writing program with me but I know better. I have used the IEW History with 2 other kids so I know how to teach it. Then I heard about WWS. Sometimes I wish I never went on these boards :glare: because I think I know what we are doing next year and then I hear of something new! I looked at the samples and it looks great and would help my daughter in many areas but do I really need another writing program? I do have 2 more kids after her that could use it in future years. One drawback to WWS looks like it would take me working with her on a daily basis ( which I know would be better but with 6 kids to work with I don't need another mommy intensive curriculum.) Is anyone using it who used to use IEW? I really like all of the Peace Hill products but I'm trying to use more of what I already have instead of buying so many new things each year. What should I do? :bigear: Gretchen in No. CA
  9. I plan on doing the Anatomy one with my 3rd grade son (and his tag a long Kind. sister) this year. Would I be better off with the regular one or the Jr. one for him? I'm hoping to go to a Home School conference next week so maybe I'll see the differences then. Which one do you think would be best for a 3rd grade boy? Thanks, Gretchen
  10. My son will be third grade in the fall. The plan is for him to do FFL 3, WWE 3 and the Michael Clay Thompson Grammar Island and other books. I think I have too many things planned, but we can skip some of the repetition and take 1 1/2 or 2 years if we need to. Just got my MCT in the mail last week and it is very different than FFL but still looks wonderful. just in a different way. Gretchen
  11. Has anyone used the Classical Acts and Facts Science cards that they now sell? I have been reading The Core and gone to the cc website alot and am interested in my younger kids memorizing facts for the different subjects. I want to tailor it to what we are studying in science for next year, which will be either Astronomy or Chemistry/Anatomy. I know I could make up my own, but that would take time and I really don't know what I would have them memorize. Sometimes in the past, I try to save money and say I'll make something on my own but then it doesn't get done:blushing:. so sometimes it is worth it to pay for it, because having it sit there on the table will remind me to drill them on the science facts (or other subjects) Has anyone used these? Or made up their own science facts to memorize? TIA, Gretchen
  12. Hi, I am ordering the first level of MCT for my son (8) and thought the program would be right for my daughter who is 12. What level should I get her? She has done very little grammar, we just started GWG 6 last month. Anyone start with an older child that hasn't had much grammar? thanks, Gretchen
  13. Thanks Penelope, You have helped me think through what I need to purchase. Can't wait to order it! Gretchen
  14. I'm glad I'm not the only one using 2 Grammar programs!:tongue_smilie: Now I have to decide if I want to buy all parts of the program ( I am leaning that way) and if I need the teacher's editions. What did you all use? Thanks, Gretchen:)
  15. Hi, I was all set to use FLL 3 with my son next year when I started hearing all about the Michael Clay Thompson LA on my IEW email loop. I resisted looking at it for a while but just gave in and now I don't know what to do!! Could I use them both together or would that be too much? I keep trying to simplify my schooling as I'm homeschooling 6 kids, but there are too many great programs out there. I could alternate programs, or spead them out over 2 years or ??? Any thoughts?:bigear: Thanks! Gretchen
  16. Thanks! I'll send an email to the author to get access to the teacher stuff. Since his website has quizes and answers to the questions in the textbook, do you think I could manage this without a teachers guide? I'm not strong in chemistry myself so I thought I would need a teachers guide. Thanks! Gretchen in No. CA
  17. Hi, All these post for Conceptual Chemistry and Conceptual Physics have peaked my interest! I found many at good prices but I can't find a teachers manual or instructors guide for Chemistry. Anyone have any ideas of where to find one? I think I would be really lost without one. TIA. Gretchen in No. CA
  18. Hi, My oldest daughter loves Anne of Green Gables, and I just found Where the Brook and River Meet. It is a unit study for high school that includes everything except math, science, foreign language. After looking at reviews it looks like something she would really enjoy. Of course, I found this after I already planned her year, using the books that her older brothers used in 9th grade. I would be willing to suppliment the Anne study with what I have if I find an area lacking in the study. Have any of you used it or seen it? I am hoping to look at it at conference in June (if they have it there), but I'd love some feedback on it now. TIA, Gretchen
  19. Thanks Laurie for the clarification. (Sorry for misspelling your name!:tongue_smilie:) I plan to order the Apologia/Red Wagon Biology DVD today. Hope it will help science go better for the rest of the year!:001_smile: Gretchen in No. CA
  20. Lori, When you switched to Apologia, did you still use the DIVE DVD or did you use the Red Wagon one? Thanks, Gretchen
  21. These DVD's look great! Maybe just what we need to help jumpstart science. How does the Red Wagon DVD's compare with the DIVE into Science DVD's? I know that you can use the DIVE with different Biology books where the Red Wagon is just for Apologia. DIVE is also a lot cheaper. Has anyone compared the two? With 6 kids coming up through the ranks, DVD classes are more economical than online classes. TIA, Gretchen
  22. Hi, My son is having a hard time with Apologia Biology. He has taken the test to Module 2 three times ( 2 times the regular test and 1 time with the alternate test). He reads the text, answers the questions, takes notes, etc. I realize that he has difficulty reading and comprehending, also struggles with having a hard time memorizing things. So my question in this. Should I switch him to something like PASS Biology or should I keep working with him on the Apologia? I really don't care if he learns the science or not, I am concerned with the fact that he can not comprehend well enough from a textbook to pass a test. I know some of the blame is mine, that I haven't spent enough time in earlier years getting him ready for this. I have 6 kids and don't have enough time to do each subject with him. In his earlier years, we used Sonlight with me reading alot to him but probably not enough discussion to see if he was really getting it. He is very gifted when it comes to computers or engines. But he has taken computer classes at the community college and only gotten C's. He has done well on all of the labs, and activities, but scored low on tests from the textbook. Any words of wisdom out there? By the way, he is 17 and wants to go to college to get a degree in something computer, but I don't know if he can handle the textbooks. Thanks so much! Gretchen
