  1. Both!!! We loved them both.I guess if you really had to choose, maybe Bronze Bow for a boy and Golden Goblet for a girl. No, wait I was thinking Mara Daughter of the Nile for a girl. I would try to do both. Maybe do one as a read aloud and assign the other as a reader. Or get it on CD and listen to one of them in the car? I guess I'm no help either!
  2. I'm looking for her to master essay writing and whatever writing she will need in college. I guess I should research what type of writing she'll do in college. She will be an art major (main interest in animation) and will start out at the local community college. When she starts there she'll do a placement test to see what English class to take. I hadn't looked at the syllabus for Preparation for Rhetoric class at WTMA before. It is good to look at and maybe that is possible to do this summer. Thanks!
  3. My daughter will be in 12th grade next year. She is behind in writing. Two years ago she did IEW SWI C (and did fine). This year she did Essentials in Writing11, but I haven't looked at it all year, and she feels she hasn't learned anything. I am starting her younger brother in WWS 1 so started looking at WWS 3 for her. But does she need to do WWS1 and WWS2 first? When I look at the samples of WWS, it seems to build on the previous levels so don't know if you can just start with the third book. I was hoping to do it this summer and either do an online writing class, IEW SWI CC or LTOW with her this fall. I have spend hours reading all of the writing posts (thanks to all you who have posted so much about what you use and why) but still don't know what to do with her in her final year with me. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do with her for her last year? or do I just sign up for an online class? I'm not against an online class (even if they are expensive) but it is hard to know which one will work for her. Thanks for any help. Grethen
  4. Good idea, I'll try reposting. I'm starting to panic as it is her last year and I want to focus on writing for her. Thanks for your input. Gretchen

  6. Hi, My daughter will start season 1 of AG in the fall. Have any of you used the DVD? I like the idea of her being less dependent on my for the lesson but I haven't heard any reviews of the DVD. Thanks, Gretchen

  8. When my kids were this age, I did SOTW 3 with many of the readers and read alouds from Sonlight 3. I think it is now called Core D? It worked out great and they all love history now! Gretchen
  9. I have this same question so I hope others will see it and help us out! I am leaning toward JAG, even tho I have seen many posts from others who have finished FLL4 and gone straight into AG. My son doesn't like grammar, so I think the simpler, easier JAG will get done with a better attitude than AG which I think will go too fast. But I still have a couple months to decide. Hope this helps. Gretchen in No. CA
  10. You ladies are great! Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to doing it with my daughter next year and I know my 10 yob will be listening in a lot! Since I know my son will enjoy it in a couple of years when he is older, I am already considering if for our co-op classes. thanks again! Gretchen
  11. Hi, Is there much difference between the first and second editions of Literary Lessons for Lord of the Rings? I know some have said that they just used the teacher's edition of the old version but I feel we might be missing something if I don't buy the current edition. Thanks, Gretchen in No. CA
  12. Hi, I am considering using Literary Lessons for Lord of the Rings with my daughter next year. Is there much difference between the first and second editions? We will be doing it a lot together, maybe the comprehension and voc. orally, so I don't think she write in it. I have a friend with the first edition so don't know if is worth the expense to buy the second, but I will if it has a lot of changes or is a lot better than the older one. Thanks, Gretchen in No. CA
  13. Sue, Did you decide what you'll be using for your co-op class? I am considering teaching American History in our co-op and am looking at either the Notgrass American History or Bill Bennett's The Last Best Hope books. I'd love to find out what you are doing. We meet weekly for 3 hours but I'm not sure what I'll be doing with all that time. Thanks, Gretchen
  14. There is a placement test to help you determine that. Also, look at the table of contents to see what he has covered and what he still needs to do. Gretchen
  15. I don't know any French. I took Spanish in high school and college and my older 3 have taken Spanish and I was able to help them some. My soon-to-be 9th grader wants to do French. Could she do Rosetta Stone and Breaking the Barrier with very little/no help from me? Thanks, Gretchen in No. CA
  16. Thanks for the reminder. It is so easy to get caught up in the business of each day that sometimes we need a reminder to say these special words to the ones we love and hold dear. Thank you !:iagree:
  17. You might email them and ask. I'm wanting to buy LLFLOTR so would love for it to go on sale.:iagree:
  18. Hi, My son has applied to Evangel University in MO. He got in but I don't know anything about it other than looking at their website, which of course looks good. This board is such a great source of info. I wondered if anyone here can give me any info. TIA, Gretchen in NO. CA
  19. Hi, I'm considering having my 9th grade daughter do Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings next year. Should she read The Hobbit this summer before the Lord of the Rings set? I haven't read any of these books so I don't know much about them. Anyone have a used set of LLFLOTR they would like to sell? :001_smile: Thanks, Gretchen in No. CA
  20. My son, Nicholas, just found out he got accepted to California State University at Sacramento and University of California at Davis! We almost didn't apply as the admissions people said to not apply and the applications said that your high school classes had to be from an accredited high school - and as a home school we are not accredited. :glare: But we decided at the last minute to apply and leave it in the Lord's hands and he got into both! :hurray: He said no to Sac. State and yes to UC Davis. Now just to wait for news regarding scholarships. Congratulations to all the other acceptances too!:hurray: Gretchen in No. CA
  21. I have heard that Shepherd Biology is a better fit for some than Apologia. I guess if your child struggles with the wordiness of Apologia, they will do better with Shepherd. I am considering Shepherd Biology in a couple of years for my 13yod. My older boys did Apologia and didn't like it so I wanted to try Shepherd for my daughter. Gretchen in No. CA
  22. I'm glad this is working well for you! I just ordered it today for next year. My 9th grader will be doing a lot more with it, but it will be a great spine to use for all of my kids. Gretchen in No. CA
