  1. Susan in TX

    Sad

I am feeling nostalgia for the days of old when we fought about things like grocery carts and vacuum cleaners. I think we could use some kilts. Susan in TX
  2. This is a good article about cases in Dallas: https://www.dallasnews.com/news/public-health/2020/05/28/covid-19-has-hit-black-neighborhoods-in-dallas-hard-heres-why/ Susan in TX
  3. Our county (Dallas, TX) publishes a report every Tues. and Fri. with a breakdown of cases by city. I have been following the cases in our city closely since the end of March. I look at the week to week increase in cases to decide if it is safe to go out. I am waiting for a sustained decline in new cases. Also our county has a color-coded risk level so I am following that as well. So far we have been in the red zone which is "stay home, stay safe". There are four zones: red, orange, yellow, and green. They are using new cases as well as hospitalizations to determine what zone we are in. Susan in TX
  4. This might be because of anxiety rather than not wanting to work hard. It may be that he is a bit of a perfectionist or otherwise has some performance anxiety. Susan in TX
  5. My point was about the risk of overwhelming hospitals. Specifically: "In a town where a large portion of a younger demographic is infected, there will be a less overwhelmed hospital." Based on our local hospitalization statistics I think that there is still a risk of overwhelming hospitals even with a younger demographic. In Dallas County so far we have had 1,113 hospitalizations. Of those 738 were under age 65. Susan in TX
  6. The thing is that it is not just those in the high risk demographic that are needing hospitalization. In my county 66% of those hospitalized were under age 65 and half did not have any chronic heath conditions that would put them in the high risk category. https://www.dallascounty.org/Assets/uploads/docs/covid-19/hhs-summary/COVID-19-DCHHS-Summary_051120.pdf Susan in TX

  8. I am in Dallas County and we had 179 new cases today, which is the most we have had in one day so far, so I will not be going anywhere. Susan in TX
  9. It is very normal for children to be able to read words but not be able to spell them. The fact that she is reading so well is great. For most kids spelling ability naturally improves over time. I have always waited until 3rd grade to begin a formal spelling curriculum. If you want to use a program with her, I really like Spelling You See. I started using it with my son who is 8 and a struggling reader. It is very gentle and only takes about ten minutes a day. It is a very different approach from other spelling curriculum. Susan in TX
  10. I miss having a quiet house and I miss my kids being able to go outside and play with the other kids in the neighborhood. I don't miss driving or the school pick-up line. Susan in TX
  11. As a homeschooler the requirements to graduate are whatever you want them to be. My son struggled with academics both in homeschool and public school. I simply graduated him when he turned 18. Up until that point I met him where he was at and I did the best I could. Susan in TX
  12. A case in India in a person who visited Austin TX. (But of course we know he couldn't have gotten it in Austin). https://www.fox7austin.com/news/dell-india-employee-who-recently-visited-austin-now-testing-positive-for-coronavirus Susan in TX
  13. And now that mall is closed for deep cleaning https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2020/03/02/north-star-mall-closes-for-24-hour-deep-cleaning-after-infected-coronavirus-evacuee-visited-shopping-center/ Susan in TX
  14. Her mother might not have it now but everyone in that facility has been exposed. The entire facility should be under strict quarantine. And anyone who has been in the facility should also be quarantined. It is things like this that make me very pessimistic about our ability to stop this virus in the US. Susan in TX
  15. I'm in the Dallas area and I just got back from Costco. It was very busy and lots of people were buying bottled water. They sold out of the Kirkland brand bottled water and the rest was running low. There was no rubbing alcohol. Susan in TX
  16. "The County of Santa Clara Public Health Department says it is an adult woman who is a household contact of the third Santa Clara County case that was reported Friday." https://www.kron4.com/health/coronavirus/4th-case-of-coronavirus-confirmed-in-santa-clara-county/ Susan in TX
  17. Or maybe Trump got it wrong? (Wouldn't be the first time. LOL) Susan in TX
  18. Ok. New York Times got it wrong at first. It must have been the woman from South Korea. "Kay Taylor, a spokeswoman for EvergreenHealth, said the person who died was a patient at the organization’s hospital in Kirkland, Washington. President Trump identified her as “a wonderful woman, a medically high risk patient in her late 50s.” Susan in TX
  19. Again from the New York Times: "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Saturday that it was authorizing American laboratories to develop their own coronavirus tests, which should significantly increase the country’s testing capacity. The effect could be rapid. About 80 labs and private companies have applied for emergency approval for tests they have already created. If they have submitted evidence that the tests work, the labs and companies will be able to use them immediately, rather than wait for the F.D.A. to complete reviews and issue approvals." It's about time. They should have done this sooner. We have lost valuable time because of the lack of testing. I am afraid that this will spiral out of control now. Susan in TX
  20. New York Times reports: "A man near Seattle has become the first novel coronavirus patient to die in the United States, health officials said Saturday. Kay Taylor, a spokeswoman for EvergreenHealth, said the person who died was a patient at the organization’s hospital in Kirkland, Washington." Is this a case that we were already aware of? Or is this a new case? Susan in TX
  21. https://www.dallasnews.com/business/2020/02/27/largest-us-surgical-mask-provider-no-longer-accepting-individual-orders-amid-coronavirus-crisis/ Richland Hills-based surgical mask provider Prestige Ameritech is no longer accepting orders of its masks from individuals as it focuses on supplying its U.S. hospital clients. “If you are looking to place a one-time high volume order of masks or respirators we cannot help you,” a recording on Prestige Ameritech’s phone line said. “We are working hard to serve only U.S. hospital customers through the coronavirus crisis.” Prestige Ameritech operates a 200,000 square-foot facility near Fort Worth and is the leading manufacturer of surgical masks in the U.S. The company has been overwhelmed with demand but is following through with orders placed before it closed them to individuals. 22. It seems strange to me that there are so many cases outside of Italy that have occurred in people who were in Italy. It just seems like a high number based on the cases that are in Italy, which makes me think that there are way more cases in Italy that no one knows about. And I do not understand why we haven't been testing more in the US and why we don't have the ability to test but other countries do. If we really wanted to stop this thing we would be treating every pneumonia case as possible covid-19 and we would be testing many more people. And I also don't understand why we are not limiting travel to/from Italy and Korea or at least telling travelers from those countries to self-isolate for 14 days. Susan in TX
  23. My daughter is a student at the University of Dallas. They have a Rome campus. She spent a semester there two years ago. This is the situation for them now: http://udallasnews.com/2020/02/25/romers-in-semi-quarantine-as-italys-coronavirus-cases-rise-administration-weighing-options/ Susan in TX
  24. This is totally unrealistic where I live. Our public schools are over-crowded. There would be no way to divide students into smaller groups. And our schools are not set up to be able to provide internet instruction. This is something that would take a year or more to implement. Also, if we close the schools then the parents won't be able to go to work. I guess that won't be a problem if they tell everyone to stay home though. Does the federal government have the authority to order schools closed or would that be decided on a local or state level? Susan in TX
