  1. I try really hard to do museums and stuff with everyone. We are super lucky, San Diego has tons of awesome museums, parks, art galleries etc...
  2. Parasites are microscopic, I didn't see it. They just ran the tests for it. My regular Dr. freaked out, and was like, "Oh my gosh, have you been out of the country blah blah??" :scared: But then the new Dr. said it was sooo common. I would never have thought I had a parasite. But my stomach issues were so bad, i was starting to worry I had cancer or something. I was relieved it was only a parasite.

  4. I don't know about the heavy periods etc... But I had terrible IBS like symptoms with awful stomach cramps etc... for over a year with no relief. It was horrible. I finally *insisted* my dr run every single test she could run, and it turned out I had a parasite. Find a new dr, even if you have to drive, and don't leave until they run every test they can (and make sure you do a stool test, parasites are apparently more common than we think).
  5. I just download the Botany pages this morning. Are you using the www.apologia/.com/bookextras and the password that comes in the front of the book? It worked fine for me this morning.
  6. Thanks for the info ladies, I think I'll add Jump In and occasionally eliminate the LL writing. He really needs more writing instruction.
  7. I've been reading all the literature threads, trying to find a good program for my 9th grader, who is a little below grade level. It seems like Lightening Literature 8, would be a good fit for him. DO i need another writing program? I was planning to have him do, "Jump In". I just don't want to overwhelm him. Is LL enough for Writing and Literature?
  8. Thanks ladies. I think I'm going to order it. It looks like a good fit
  9. I don't mean the high school books, but the regular program? His grammer skills are weak. I just wondered if it would work for a high schooler.
  10. Looking for a typical recommended reading list for 9th. Anyone have one they like?
  11. ITA, but I usually hit Costco every week. I can buy a box with 2 gallons of non organic milk for around $4, cheese blocks for $5, apples for .95 cents a pound...I know what the good Costco deals are, and i use them! You just have to stay away from the expensive stuff.
  12. I loved Saxon in the younger years! So glad it's working for you!!
  13. Glad to see this thread! I'm planning 9th for my 14 year old, who sounds a bit like yours. I haven't done NotGrass for high school , but we did it last year for 8th and it was great, he loved it.
  14. I want to try to piece an earth science curriculum together with DVD's as the basis. Anyone know of a good series of earth science dvd's?
  15. I'd totally cater it, and make it a no kid party! Sounds fun :-)
  16. I ike the drama classes suggestion. What about Cotillion? That would give him lots of practice in how not to feel awkward in social situations but he'd learn it with a bunch of other awkward teens!
  17. Interesting how many people said they try for the 1:00 time slot. I've never thought to try that time! I'm going to have to try and see if that works better for us!
  18. You'd think by now I would have figured this out. My 14 year old was born with a cleft palate. It seems like the appointments go in waves. No apps for a few months, then we are drowning in Dr. appointments. Some I can make myself, some are "you get whatever time you get" appointments. I can't figure out what woud work best, appointments in the mornings to get them out of the way but it messes with our school day or appointments in the afternoon that would conflict with sports and extra curriculars. I can't leave the other kids home, they all have to come, since the next oldest is only 11.
  19. For Vocabulary cartoons I assigned him 5 words a week, and we just went in the order that they were in the book. He spent a few minutes each day, reading each page and looking at the pictures. At the end of the week I'd give him a quiz. At the end of 2 weeks, I photocopied the quiz that was inside the book and had him do it. It was so painless and he really learned the words!
  20. For straight vocab (not word studies) we used Vocabulary Cartoons this year. It's a brilliant way of learning vocabulary. Each page has a word on it, with a cartoon that somehow is related to the word. My 8th grader was memorizing vocab left and right with little effort. The cartoons just stuck in his head. It was fantastic.
  21. That would totally hurt my feelings too :-( I'm sorry. Sounds like to you need to stop relying on her though and find someone else.
  22. My dh was a bus driver for many years. It's a crappy job. Budget cuts took their bus monitors, so they were stuck with a bus full of as many as 70 kids with one adult. DH was punched by a student one day, and then they expected him to drive the kid a week later. The drivers are well trained where we live (and paid well too!), it's the kids who aren't well trained, LOL!
