  1. I borrowed it from a friend. I have to be honest, I didn't lisen to the whole thing, because I had just watched her Right brain learner DVD and read through her Brain Therapy manual. But I found the suggestions on the booklet to be very helpful. I've implemented some of them with my 13 year old with ADHD with great results.
  2. I'll toss something totally different out there. We use Bob Jones English for 2-6th. I love love love it for it's simplicity and the open and go factor. I started using it with my oldest boy, because I wanted something that "looked" fun, but was still solid and would do a good job of teaching grammar and writing. The books switch off, one chapter on writing, one chapter on grammar. My boys loved it, and I loved that they loved it. Just a thought different than the rest.
  3. We finally decided to do IEP testing through our homeschool charter school for our 13 year old ds. I have mixed feelings, part of me wished we had done it sooner, part of me wanted to rip up the paperwork and say never mind, LOL. It's a 3 step process, we met with the psychologist last Friday. I felt like she really understood my struggles with Blake. I was able to explain the wierd things he does when he writes that make me think he has dysgraphia. I told her we are 99.9% sure he has ADHD and while he's been easy to work with all through elementary school, middle school has been a nightmare. I was so worried that she would be judgemental, but she was awesome. I was so stressed out by the process that I totally cried after I walked out of the testing room. After the testing we talked a bit without Blake. She told me he was brilliantly smart and was answering questions faster than she could write the answers down, but then she said he really struggles with abstract concepts. It was an eye opening conversation. So now we meet with her again on Friday for another test, I forget the name, but she said it was too many tests to do all at once. The first appointment took 3 hours... Then he will do more testing with a specialist at the school. Once all of that is done they compile the info and we have an IEP meeting. I hope we can get some answers.
  4. So DH and I have decided that I am definitely homeschooling our now 8th grader next year. I had never planned to homeschool high school, and we sent our now 11th grader to school in 9th, but we've decided to keep Blake home for high school. He will probably stay with our homeschool charter school, which will make transcripts and such easier for me. But I have no idea where to start with high school curriculum. We have very very very loosely followed TWTM book, done a few years of sonlight, a few things of Bob Jones etc... over the past 9 years. So I'm not curriculum loyal. We use what works for that year. He is really just an average kid, not brilliant and doing gemoetry in 8th grade or anything LOL. I have no idea where to start for 9th grade. Help!?
  5. I'll chime in that I'm totally wringing my hands with nervousness about planning high school too! I'll have a 9th grader next year eeek!!! My son would love an entire english program centered around LOTR's, who sells it?
  6. For preschool and Kindergarden we are using weefolk art's currculum. You'd have to print it oall out and get the books but I really like it!
  7. Oh good, I was hoping it would be appropriate for him. I'm so tired of trying new things and them not working. I think this just might be perfect!!
  8. Would Writing WIth Skill be appropriate for a struggling 8th grader writer? I can't tell what ages/grades it's designed for. I think I'm going to try it for a few weeks with the online sample before buying it. Just curious what everyone thinks about it and what ages you are using it with?
  9. I love the writing instruction in BJU 1-6. The instruction for 7th and up aren't the greatest, though I like the assignments. I have the 8th grade TM, and I've just been using it as a jumping off point. I'm off to check out the suggestions in the replies. Maybe something will work better for us!
  10. I fpound Marlie's Christmas dress 2 months ago at a childrens resale shop. It's beautiful and only cost me 7.99!
  11. My 10 year old dd has been quite snippy on occasion the past few months. She's totally hormonal, and I don't expect to get through the next year without her starting her period. Do you think maybe your dd is hitting puberty?
  12. I saw the 20/20 segment and I cringed when they talked about homeschooling. It is so sad that children are being taught Warren Jeffs is president, and that they can't read. I agreee with a previous poster, that's not homeschooling. They run a private school, which certainly should be held to some sort of standard.
  13. I'm on the fence about Minecraft. Better thant tv? Sure. But mine obsess over it, and I've had to restrict their access to it sometimes. I wish we hadn't started it...
  14. I agree that counseling is in order. DH and I went a about a year ago, to deal with some issues with our teens. It was very helpful to have an objective person help us work through our issues. If you could approach him with "let's go talk to comeone about our teens", instead of lets talk about ourselves, it would probably really help you ((hugs))
  15. Yes, they really do play with all those accessories! My dd loves her AG stuff. I agree with the others, the Target doll accessories are a really good price and work great with AG dolls.
  16. I really like LifePacs for the kids to do Bible independently. But the King James version references are really tough for Blake to understand. Is there anything similar to LifePacs with a different Bible translation?
  17. Ohhhh I totally forgot about Trixie Belden and Cherry Ames. I have those somewhere in the attic, and a whole box of the yellow cover Nancy Drew. I need to dig those out for Marlie!! I have to say though, the Bobbsey Twins were my absolute favorite! :D
  18. When I was a kid, my parents voted in a neighboors garage. They ask for volunteers to host polling places, so why not, LOL! They showed on the news last night, that one precinct was voting in a mortuary chapel!
  19. Both of my VT kids complained of headaches and were tired during VT. Vision therapy takes a lot of energy, and it's hard work. I'd talk to your therapist to be sure, it's within normal range for your kiddo.

  21. Another "just say no". You won't help her by enabling her. :grouphug:
  22. I wouldn't try any new curriculum while doing VT. In fact, we did much less school work. VT is so hard for them, their eyes are tired, they are tired etc...
  23. I've tried dvds, video games, skip counting, flash cards etc....None of it worked. The other day I posted in the special needs forum about the new thing we are doing for multiplication, and it's working!! Here's a c&p from my post there. In a later post I post picture of one of the cards with the story. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/showthread.php?t=434904 I'm doing Dianne Craft's "Brain Integration Therapy" with my two middle kids. So far so good, it seems to be helping. One of our huge hurdles for my daughter has been multiplication facts. She's almost 11 and in 5th grade. We've been working on multiplication facts since 3rd grade. I've done so many different things so help her, it's crazy. I bought Dianne Craft's Right Brain Multiplication cards, and have been following her instructions to help my dd memorize them. This is the beginning of week 3 using them. We introduce 5 facts a week. She knows 10 facts already, and is on her way to learning the 5 for this week. It's amazing. I can't believe how easy it's been. Diane says that right brain learners need pictures, color, humor etc.. to help things stick. At first I thought it was stupid, showing her the fact cards and reading the whole long story to her, but she totally gets it. So if anyone else's kid is struggling with multiplication facts, it's definitely worth a try! http://stores.diannecraft.org/Detail.bok?no=14
  24. Two of my kids have done VT, one of my younger sisters also did VT. My daughter did 12 weeks of therapy, one appointment a week with 30-45 min of homework every day. It was very hard, she cried a lot. I had to lighten her school workload and adjust our schedules a bit. She had convergence insufficiency, and a few other issues. ABout halfway through the 12 weeks I started noticing a huge difference in her reading. By the time the 12 weeks was over, she had her nose in a book everywhere we went (the dr said that wasn't typical, it often takes up to 6 months post therapy to see a big difference). With my son, we did 10 weeks of therapy, one appointment a week with the 45 min homework every day. His results were not as drastic as my dd's, but we have noticed a difference. He has a repeat visograph appointment next month for 6 months post therapy. I'll be interested to see if there is still an issue with his tracking. It was exhausting, but we've had great results. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
