I am such a huge Errol Flynn fan! We own that movie, plus about 6 of his others! My kids really loved it! We watched it this year when they heard the story from SOTW. I thought, "cool tie in!" I plan to have them watch "against all falgs" and Captain Blood" in a few weeks when they start learning about Queen Elizabeth I and pirates! Any excuse to watch an Errol Flynn movie! He was in quite a few westerns so we are all set for next year too!:001_smile:

Do you give your child an allowance?
Jennifer in NH replied to asher's topic in General Education Discussion Board
No. as was stated earlier, chores are a part of living here. However, they are not without money. On birthdays and some holidays relatives will give them money. That is theirs to do with as they please...we do have certain things that just aren't allowed in the house though, so they know that! Examples are: video games, anything Spongebob, anything Bratz, etc... they don't watch too much tv, so there is less influence to just go out and buy stuff anyway! When they are teenagers I will give them a clothing allowance....on that they will have to budget in everything from socks and underwear to wintercoats...my parents did this with me and it really helped me learn how to, and how not to, spend money! -

GERD--for those with it or professionals

There is a book that I love called "Heartburn cured" I'm not sure that it is sold on Amazon, but the doctor has a website. it is, heartburncured.com Anyway, the book is pretty good, but just so you know it is mostly about low carb eating. It helped me a great deal, so I thought I would just pass the infromation on. Jenny -
I have no good advice..I've been shutting most of the doors in our house lately! Mine is 22 months old and loves to play in the toilet or climb on top of the toilet and get to the sink where he plays in the water...gets into all the glue, tape scissors and everything else in the office if the door is open. All that stuff is way out of reach, but he manages to quick as lightning, get a step stool, find a chair climb up everything..well, you get the idea! He takes about a 2 hours nap and almost all of our school is being done then...too bad there isn't enough time to do it all in that 2 hours!:D

Some questions about naturopaths...
Jennifer in NH replied to Paz's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Mine charges $45 as well. No idea about vaccinations though. -

The slang word "ain't" and basically all profanity. -
Taking a year off from the history cycle
Jennifer in NH replied to Mom2boys's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I have been looking at the Winterpromise catalog and that unit sounds like so much fun! I say go for it! I am doing WP american story 1 this comming year, and just listening to the audio cd of SOTW3, my plan was to do the same thing next year and then perhaps do the adventures in sea and sky. If the kids like that kind of stuff, they sure will have a whole lot of "pegs" in history that they will remember! I cannot see it doing any harm at all! just my 2 cents worth. Jenny -
I am sooooo tired of snow.
Jennifer in NH replied to Elisabeth in IL's topic in General Education Discussion Board
it hasn't snowed here in a little while, alot of sleet and freezing rain etc...but we still have 2 feet of the stuff in the yard! I would love to see some green! green grass that is and maybe a leaf or two! However, a few years ago when Easter was in the middle of April we had 3 feet of snow! Hopefully by mid April all this will be a memory and there will be green! -

Are you a top or bottom gal/guy
Jennifer in NH replied to Gamom3's topic in General Education Discussion Board
When it is over the top the cat sees it and unrolls the whole darn thing!:D Then, the toddler helps! When it is in the back, the cat doesn't notice it, and well, the toddler just needs to be shut out of the bathroom anyway!;) -
I'm looking at the packages for PL and wondering if the dvd is useful..what do all of you PL users use? should I go for the whole thing, or just part? I've never been near anything Latin except maybe a statue! So, I am leaning toward all the help I can get! TIA Jenny

Are you a top or bottom gal/guy
Jennifer in NH replied to Gamom3's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Alright, this is a little silly, but I am someone, and so is my DH, that has to have it coming from the bottom! We figure it is because we are left handed...that's probably nothing to with it! If I am at my mother's house and have to change the roll, it goes over the top...her house and it drives her crazy the other way! Now that i've admitted this terrible secret...please don't hold it against me!;) -
I love cloth diapers! I do use a dry pail, it is actually an empty kitty litter pail with a lid. It keeps the ammonia smell inside the pail...it is a strong ammonia smell when I dumpit in the washer...my ds is almost 2 and about to be toitlet trained...the diapers didn't have such a strong smell when he was smaller. I'm one one those that never use disposables. I even use cloth wipes. My diaper bag used to have to be a bit bigger on trips but well worth it in my opinion. By the way, dumping disposables into the trash kinda smells worse in my opinion. And if you use a disposable with a "diaper genie" I just think that is really wasteful...although that is just my opinion... Good luck with your desision, there are some really cool cloth diapers out there now! We use a brand called "mommy's touch" pocket diapers..I love them!

That was so funny! I can just imagine it happening, good for you! I thought of something else that irked me, still does. My oldest is a girl and the next is a boy. Someone I considered a friend informed me that was perfect, I think she called it a rich man's family or something like that. When she found out I was pregnant with #3 she went on a tirade about overpopulation!:001_huh: and "population zero" and on and on....we have since drifted apart as friends....wonder why?;)

I don't ever comment, but I too may make a rather envious glance...We have three young children and if I had known how much I was going to love having them we would have "tried" to have many more! Alas, I never thought I'd like being a mom so we didn't even start until I was 35...start REALLY trying that is.. We had already been married for 10 years. its one of those things that if I could do it over again, I'd want more kids! You all really are blessed to have so many. But, of course, you all know that or you wouldn't homeschool!:001_smile: Jenny

I have NO idea what it costs now, but put into perspective what it costs for you to cloth, feed, provide hotwater for showers and everything else and then the price does not seem so much....I think my parents made out on the deal...as a teen, I ate a lot!:001_smile: I also totally agree on a semester or more! even to an english speaking country..but especially to a country with a different language! If it is a 3 or 4 week trip that is a vacation!;)

:lol: I'm sorry, but this really tickled my funny bone! My MIL is full of back handed compliments, but never any advice! If you cook the ham in a crockpot all day it will fall apart, no problem! Now, I've over cooked mine before and had it WAY too dry! Oops! That's when we call out for Chinese food! Of course my ILs don't visit very often:001_smile:.

I am going to say, yes...if the child really wanted to. I was an AFS exchange student back in 1981 (eek! cannot believe I am that old). However, so far I'm not sure that my kids have the personanilty for it. At least with AFS there was a fairly rigorous screening process. Oh yes, I would let them go away for a whole year...I did, and I learned quite a bit!

another homeschool name question.
Jennifer in NH replied to Jennifer in NH's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Yes, the task of picking one would be so daunting! There would be so very many great names out there, I think i would be paralyzed with indecision!:001_smile: My dd would love Hogwarts!;) They are as yet too young for me to be making transcripts and NH does not require a name. Thanks for the info! -
I don't want to hijack the other thread, but would love to ask a related question. Why do you name your homeschool. I obviously don't have a name for mine!:001_smile: Is it required, or that you just wish to? I have honestly never even thought about naming our "school." Now that I have, it sounds intriguing. so I am just wondering if there is a reason to do it, or just personal choice? TIA Jenny
