  1. Eden in Princeton, NJ has an adult center on-site. I haven't been on their site in a while, I know they expanded into FL though. I would ask her to speak with her psych, usually they all have a connection to an inpatient facility for short-term issues.
  2. My guy will be 11 in a few days: dx'd with pddnos-hyperlexic trait. He was vax injured at 17mos, lost speech with the development of measles post vax. Speech returned 6 months later, slowly, but was reading, with other apparent issues. Dx'd fully at 36 mos. LOTS of anxiety. Gross motor planning issues. Social issues in that his conversation is poor (but we're still working on it). What worked: HWT. What's working now: Saxon Math. The math whiz kid has slowed down and suddenly needs the drill and kill of Saxon. IT works. R&S grammar drill and kill works for him. He's hyperlexic so favors workbooks. Piano has helped. He needs this confidence boost. He is an amazing site reader so music theory is a breeze. His playing depends on his mood however ;)
  3. Looking for input.... My almost 11yo ds has high functioning ASD... pick a dx... pdd/nos hyperlexic trait versus Aspergers. Homeschool works for him. Classical Conversations (Foundations only this year) works and gets him in with other kids. There are ZERO schooling options for him here but I need to go back to work. Actually I will be working in the office of our biz. I'm sending my younger 2 to a B&M school in August. But my 11yo... no options other than homeschooling. He's entering 6th. I would really like to get him into a boxed curriculum, an online school, a distance ed program, something more "packaged" that will carry him through until graduation. I will add in my favorite curriculum on the side, but I want the foundation laid through a program. I'm weighing the following: the Keystone school which now has a middle school program, FLVS (FL virtual), Seton, MODG (both Catholic), or Ace/PACES. I'm looking at a diploma program. Academically he has the ability to do well, he has a normal IQ, but with his dx he has a few limitations. We have a private writing tutor which has really been a benefit for his composition skills. I will have to take him into the office with me, so he needs something that will require a bit of independence (that will allow me to get some work done). We're looking at it as a vocational school, he'll be getting his work done and also learning the business. I may still do CC one day a week or a local "drop-off" homeschool academy one day a week to get him in with peers. Any ideas/input would be appreciated!!! Thanks! -Kathy
  4. My almost 11yo has been on Zoloft on and off for a year. He put on weight QUICKLY with it which *really* freaked him out so we pulled back on it but it was our magic bullet for the tears. With Zoloft the tears just seemed to turn off. I really wanted to handle the anxiety through behavioral intervention but he needed more. The meds do help. We have another psych appt coming up and we WILL be going back on Zoloft but we need to add in something for the spaciness/focus. We didn't add in anything for the focus in the past because it will cause an increase in anxiety but now the spaciness is increasing so we need to address it.
  5. Oh yes! My 8yo dd is very mature for her age. I've had many people remark on her high "EQ." She's very nurturing and her conversations are very mature, but she LOOKS 8. Also, while she's having a very mature conversation with you she may be doing turns, splits, and heel stretches in her "Hello Kitty" head-to-toe ensemble, so it's apparent she is only 8. But some days in the course of a very mature conversation I have to stop myself (as a HS mom seeking more adult conversation) because I want to go on into conversation that she probably could handle, but doesn't need to, at this point in her life.
  6. Reading, home decor, and crafting. My happy places are the library, thrift stores where I can junk, Homegoods, and Hobby Lobby.
  7. I wonder how much of it is just the subject itself? Grammar is just.so.dry. I have often wanted to have a conversation with a long-term Shurley user to see if all of the jingles made a difference in retention. I have never tried Shurley but have wondered.
  8. Thank you all! We have a writing tutor who caught the fact that the kids did have a few gaps/holes. He has spent time in writing similes and metaphors with the kids, as I said. He also has the kids doing 5 min increments in a writing journal to increase their output. We're seeing a slow improvement. I definitely dropped the ball in writing. I love Even Moor products, will definitely check them out. Now that you mentioned it, I should use Daily Language lessons in addition to Daily Paragraph. I'll have to go peruse one at B&N and see if addresses story elements and figurative language. Thanks again!
  9. My dd will be returning to a B&M school next year. Looking over the state standards I can see that she has some holes: 1. Language Arts- we need to work on story elements and figurative language. Luckily her writing tutor has been going over similes and metaphors when he noted that gap. I'm a little lost here for resources, we've pretty much have always stuck with grammar and literature as our Lang Arts "curriculum" but we have holes (in comparison to our state standards). I have Figuratively Speaking on my Amazon wish list and have various story elements consumable workbooks on my list as well. Here's a question - I've never seen a AO Lifepak in person but I went through the S&S of their Lang Arts units and it looks like the Grade 5 Lang Arts Lifepak would fill in some of our holes in our Language Arts. Anyone have experience with Lifepaks? Looking to fill holes here, nothing more... 2. Social Studies - we've done more history a la WTM so of course we have the SS "hole" but I think I can correct that with a consumable SS book from a local teacher's store. Thanks so much!
  10. Gorgeous, thank you!!! We're in the middle of renovating an entire house so I have a billion ideas pinned. Thank you!
  11. Opinions on one vs. the other? :) I keep looking at the VIE 2011 video, the price has held me back. Just wondering! TIA!
  12. My sister-in-law. Her words to me with DS #1 were "Breastfeeding is just GROSS." Mother-in-law thought it was odd and gave me the eyeroll. I was shunned to the bathroom for feedings. They were completely thrilled when doc suggested formula for reflux and even bought me a CASE of formula. :001_huh:
  13. I don't get out much either. I like my elliptical... a lot. I like the Tracy Anderson workout vids. The biggest difference for me has been changing my diet to low, low carb. I recently went on a cruise to get a bathing suit body back I bought the prepackaged meals from dietdirect.com rather than do all liquid diet because I need to CHEW! It worked quickly (it's high protein) and was pretty painless. But I only committed to 2 weeks just to get me over a plateau.
  14. We live in a wood frame home if FLORIDA so ... termites are so, so common in my subdivision. I have neighbors who have 30K worth of termite damage. It's not unusual to see homes tented for treatment. We have a termite bond but from many neighbors' experience I can tell you they've not necessarily reaped the benefits of the bond. Some people have spent an entire year fighting with their pest control company about the bond. Some bonds only cover x,y, and z. Some bonds don't cover all the interior damage. I thought it was a standard blanket coverage but it seems to be each company has their own type of bond coverage. And they're pricey!!! I think the last one I paid was $500ish for one year. But I'm in a termite zone in a wood frame house (WHAT were the builders thinking). Almost all homes here have some type of termite damage. I've owned 3 homes in this subdivision and these 30 year old homes had some damage, somewhere. I had relatives in NJ who did not have a bond but seemed to have controlled their termite issue quickly and effectively and have had no residual issues.
  15. Some of the ideas are brilliant aren't they? I feel I could cover the walls of our classroom in all of the wonderful printables. I'm on a hunt for story elements teaching items and I think I hit the motherload last night!
  16. Ok, let me preface this with - I don't sleep a lot. I'm going, going, going constantly and multitask every minute of my day. So, I have an obnoxious amount of pins. I pin constantly. http://pinterest.com/cjbeach/
  17. I am looking at LA for grade 4 and 5. I feel like I need to more than just grammar. It is pricey, but IF it's worth then ... I really like what I saw in their samples.
  18. Has anyone's children taken classes through the Distance and Independent Study programs at Univ of Missouri, Mizzou Online?? http://cdis.missouri.edu/coursedisplay.aspx?l=e TIA!
  19. You know I love when I hear + MM stories. We *love* MM here. We use a combo of light blue MM and Horizons (purely for added flavor, though we've used all the MM supplements with as much success). MM works really, really well with my kids. I had a panic moment one day and emailed Maria in a "What should I do, what should I do?" state, and she got right back to me. Amazing customer service!
  20. For anyone considering the 2011 edition of VIE, Loyola is offering a 30% off promo using code JOY11 (stud ed and practice book is $45ish with code). http://www.loyolapress.com/
  21. My soon to be 11yo had the bumps but nothing really came to the point of eruption. I had him watch the owner's video on acne.org and bought him the clean & clear and the Neutrogena on the spot as recommended on the site. IF he uses it twice a day as recommended, his skin is gorgeous. It takes a few weeks and consistency is KEY but it works! I meant to buy the whole set from the acne.org site and I forgot (as a Christmas gift). Oops. http://www.acne.org
  22. I figured as much, since I hadn't heard of it here. :001_smile:
  23. Cleaning out my bookmarks today I found a link to its' site. http://jonesgeniuses.com/ I have never heard of it, and obviously I just bookmarked it without looking at it in length. Any experience with it here? Just curious.... TIA!
