  1. Extremely relevant...... http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_29064963/open-carry-becomes-focus-after-colorado-springs-shooting Open carry becomes focus after Colorado Springs shooting rampage Noah Harpham was spotted openly carrying a rifle before he killed 3 in Colorado SpringsNaomi Bettis told The Denver Post she called 911 after spotting her neightbor 33-year-old Noah Harpham, armed with a rifle on the street. She says a dispatcher explained Colorado allows public handling of firearms. Harpham went on to kill three people. ... "Is this person exercising their rights or about to start a very serious situation in which someone is going to be killed?" said Jacki Kelley, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. "We just don't know the difference."
  2. BIL just got permanent residency in Canada, and it took him about two years. It's definitely worth considering the climate. We live in a relatively moderate area of Colorado, and have had several neighbors miserable after their first winter - and we don't even get that much snow! AND we have sunshine! So I think it can be very tricky for some. We would like to relocate as well, but Canada is too gloomy for us. I need the sunshine. But not the heat, like South America has. I think I'm too picky! ETA, relocate because of healthcare, consumerism, and other reasons. I *love* Colorado otherwise.
  3. A sincere question for those who believe there should be no additional requirements/limitations on gun ownership: Do you believe that we don't have a problem with gun violence? Or if you do believe we have a problem, then how would you propose we address it?
  4. I know this doesn't apply to all cases, but I personally know of two suicides that I am reasonably sure never would have happened without a gun in the house. These were not chronically depressed individuals. These were individuals under extreme stress/unhappiness, combined with alcohol, and combined with the presence of a gun. Both of these most likely would have, in fact, slept it off. Instead their lives were ended. Guns make suicide too easy.
  5. Any regulation that does not apply to the entire country is close to meaningless. There is no way that creates any meaningful change when it is so easy to work around.
  6. Angry on your behalf! Glad you are pulling her. Sorry this has to add to your stress.
  7. I'm curious to see the numbers on this.... Also, I've never done a really involved poll before :blushing:
  8. Sure there are some people who think in an ideal world no one would have guns except military and police. But they aren't the ones saying "This or nothing!" They know we live in a diverse nation. All those that I know would be pleased as punch to see any sort of decent gun control regulations implemented at all. That is why there is no real political proposal to "take away the guns". On the other hand, a seemingly large amount of people think gun ownership should have *no* restrictions or requirements. Those are the ones saying "no compromise" (or at least allowing those who represent them to say it). So which one of these groups is really stopping progress on the situation? I would also say that all the reasonable gun owners out there need to do a better job voicing their reasonableness politically. If the NRA really doesn't speak for all gun owners, where are the others? Where are the representatives promoting a middle ground of responsible gun ownership?
  9. This was a specific reason given why a concealed carrying person did not intervene in the Oregon shooting. The reality is that in the confusion it is most definitely NOT always clear who the bad guy is.
  10. Right. Because gun control never helped other countries either. (sarcasm) Sorry, but I'm tired of hearing the same worn-out arguments contradicted by actual facts. My words are sharp, I am sad and angry tonight. Better to sign off! :crying:
  11. Murph, I wasn't talking about you specifically. You have given some ideas that seem reasonable. I'm talking about the possibility of seeing yours or anyone's ideas implemented in today's political climate. Compromise is a dirty word right now.
  12. I'm just not seeing compromise. In Colorado after Sandy Hook, they passed a few pretty reasonable gun control laws, certainly nothing revolutionary. Several politicians were booted out after that, because "how dare they!??" They lost their careers because they tried to be reasonable. Reasonable just doesn't sell any more.
  13. If her page is "private" is that all she needs? Or are there other settings?
  14. This is absolutely true. But on the other thread, we were talking about where to *start*. We have to start somewhere. And no one can even agree on any starting point, or any compromise.
  15. Can you give me an example of what gun-rights advocates have compromised? Because to me it seems that gun-control advocates have offered lots of compromises short of take away all the guns. Limits on types of weapons, limits on magazines, stricter background check control. These compromises never once got support from the other side. They have been fought tooth and nail at every step. The NRA has said they will not support ANY regulation or limitation. So which side does not want to compromise? Editing, I see Murphy was also saying the other side wouldn't compromise as well. But I do see compromises being offered and rejected.
  16. This issue was discussed in another thread. I am sorry if a person loses their right to own a gun because of mental health problems. But that seems like the most basic and common sense place in the world to start. It absolutely astounds me that even that can't be agreed upon. What about the rights of the rest of us not to be shot by mentally ill people with guns? When does that start carrying any weight?
  17. Yeah, annoying. I also seem to edit every post. I don't note when I edit for spelling or grammar corrections. I usually note ETA if I add or change content. I don't like the automatic statement there.
  18. DD (about to be 17) finally wants to be on facebook. I H.A.T.E facebook. I have an account there for when I am forced to use it to look at other people's photos, etc. I have extremely minimal information on my own account, never post there or post pictures there. So, I don't really know or understand the settings, etc. DD set her page to private, but also understands the whole "nothing is private on the internet concept". What else do I need to recommend to her about settings, etc? She want to connect with a very specific group of friends that she knows fairly well.
  19. I can't speak to your OP, but we go on a trip to another state every year for Thanksgiving. For SEVEN years, DD has gotten sick during this trip every year. I used to think it was viruses she wasn't used to being exposed to. Now, who knows?
  20. It's interesting how many say they believe that but would never say it to a grieving person... and yet, there are clearly plenty of people out there saying it. Do the people saying it think, "I would *usually* never say that, but *this* time it applies..."
