  2. Mighty Joe may be going home as soon as today!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen thank you for your continued prayers! I will just copy Andy's (Fletch) post right here....

Joe’s doctor visited today and reported that almost all of his lab results were normal (I asked the doctor if he was making “smart pee†and he had no idea what I was talking about). This is remarkable! They have stopped all medications (for seizures and high blood pressure) and while I was typing this entry, the nurse just removed his nasal food tube and his picc line. Wow…kind of boring to only be monitored for heart rate and oxygen saturation…it’s like he is healthy or something (go figure…).

The best part (check this out), Joe’s doctor told us that if things go well tonight…Joe could go home tomorrow…

    WOW!

Has someone out there been praying or something? A week ago Joe had a 50:50 prognosis and now we are ready to go home…c’mon…one of you must have been praying. Raise your hand if it was you, because I can’t believe we are on the verge of taking Mighty Joe back home.

His hospital release comes with some strings attached, because we’ll need to return for an MRI in the next week or so. We’ll post tomorrow if Joe is really getting booted and then you can look forward to multiple photos from our party!

Thanks again for your prayer and support through this week!

    Andy and Kendra

  3. From Kendra's blog:

Hey! Great news! Joe has been demoted from the PICU to a regular hospital room (Yay!…Now we are in the regular hospital!).

    How to Pray:

***We are trusting that God will continue to bring his kidneys back to full health. We are guessing he has about 50% usage right now.

***Once his kidneys are 100%, he will get his MRI done.

***For his potassium to regulate on it’s own.

    Estimates:

If he does excellent…we leave in 2-3 days.

If he does good…we leave in 4-5 days.

If he does average…we are here for another week

  4. We did Abeka for two years and then switched to MUS. I don't know if I can help much as we have always used manipulatives with math.

DD has always struggled with math, and MUS really helps her to understand the why of what she is doing. It is much easier for me to check up on her and not have to teach her daily. We have 5 dc and I don't know how I could spend an hour a day doing math with all my school aged children.

Ds loves math and got discouraged with Abeka 3, is now happily doing division which he hated in Abeka.

What sold me on MUS was watching the demo of algebra, I never saw a polynomial before. It made so much sense to me and I know I could not teach math that way without help.

  5. I just gave her separate sections for maps, timeline, finished lit sheets, ect... I keep it really simple so I just put in a blank piece of paper and put a post it tab on the end. Nothing fancy. :D

That didn't really work well for us...especially for my upper grammar ds. I like Siloam's simple plan. Another idea is to make a history notebook ala WTM. I may just put each week's work in a folder and then file finished work in the notebook.

Hope this makes sense, I am typing with a sleeping baby on my lap.

  6. That's interesting because I heard that the Henty books were "boring" which is why I avoided them. Hmmm...maybe I will take another look now!

I picked up the Cat of Bubastes at a homeschooling conference. I was told that he gently abridged the Henty books so that they don't drag on so long. *I* enjoyed reading Cat of B, but I know ds would not, so I got the CD, I haven't listened to it yet.

  7. Here is the latest update from Kendra. Pop over to her blog for prayer requests and more information...

Today was a pretty steady day. Joe slept for most of it, but when he awoke he was irritated by diaper rash, bright-eyed, and sucking away on his pacifier. All good! He is still chubby from the fluids, and as a result they couldn’t replace his central line IV with a PIC line. Please pray for the swelling to subside so that we can move to a PIC line; the longer the central line stays in Mighty Joe’s groin, the more likely it will get infected. The PIC line will allow them to continue his fluids and antibiotics, but it is less likely to become infected. We can also take him home with a PIC line if we have to. A little scary for me, but God is stretching me in many new ways. I am so NOT a medical girl.

He is back on antibiotics because his culture came back positive for bacteria, and if I were a medical girl, I would remember the name. When Fletch updates next, you’ll get the technical info icon_smile.gif

When you spend five days in the PICU, you see a lot of sadness. All day long we watched a vigil for a 17-year-old dying of cancer. That young lady lost her fight with cancer tonight and we were broken-hearted to hear her mama sobbing. You can pray for them, if you think of it.

    Hold your babies tightly tonight-

    Kendra

  8. The latest from Kendra's blog:

Due to a blog friend we’ve now begun referring to him as “Mighty Joe.†...

We met with Joe’s doctor this morning, overall we are still maintaining his systems and putting out fires where they start. Remember, there is no medical treatment to stop the virus, only to deal with the symptoms that the virus causes. So, overall there is not much change today in what we are doing, just monitoring him for changes. The best guess is another week in the ICU and even longer in the hospital. With that said, there have been some improvements with our little guy.

    Here is what has improved:

    *Liver enzymes have dropped!

    *Blood clotting has improved!

*Seizures have stopped and the EEG has been removed!

    *He is still peeing tons!

*He has tolerated food well since yesterday without a return of diarrhea

*He has tested negative for the bacteria “c. diff.â€

    Prayer Requests:

With all the good news, there is still a lot to pray for in this little guy’s life.

    There is still the unknown:

*Kidneys to start working on their own.

    *Heart damage

    *Brain damage

    *Liver damage

    General Prayers:

*His immune system to start working against the virus.

    *For Kendra to feel better

    Parent’s Assessment

We were greeted with open eyes again this morning. He looks less swollen and much more responsive to touch. He is much more grumpy! Kendra got to hold him this morning!

For photos and commentary, you can read theMangoTimes!

Thanks for praying for Mighty Joe!

    Kendra and Andy

  9. From Kendra's blog:

Praise the Lord for His care of us through such a competent staff. We just met with his doctor and we were told that Joe has tested positive for Enterovirus. For adults, that means vomiting and diarrhea, but with little guys like Joe…it is worse. In his case, the virus has caused sepsis (entire body infection) including his brain. The bummer is that there is no way to treat a virus directly, so we just treat the symptoms.

    and another update

Let's continue to hold Kendra and her family in prayer. I cannot imagine what they are going through

  10. Thank you so much for praying. We are buoyed by the prayers of our online friends and those here in real life, too.

Yesterday morning I thought Little Joe was sleeping just a bit too late for my comfort and when I went to wake him he was white, purple lips, eyes rolled back, clammy skin. I called 911 and he was transported to the local ER. Care there was very good, but his signs were puzzling (extremely low blood sugar, dangerously high potassium levels, among other things) so they transported him to a children's hospital 2 hours from our home. Thankfully, my sister-in-law is a nurse here and my family lives in this city so we have places to stay when we need a bit of sleep.

Joe has been a normal, healthy baby with no signs of anything abnormal. He ate well at 1 a.m. the night before I found him struggling.

They have prepared us for the long haul (both in and out of the hospital). Joe will be in the PICU for a good portion of next week at least. He has multiple systems affected. They have completed CT Scans, EEG, Spinal Taps, Viral cultures and they want an MRI.

We desire your prayers more than anything right now, so please remember our Little Joe.

    ~Kendra

May the Lord heal Little Joe and strenghten you all.

  11. That was really sweet. I cannot relate to that number of children, but I sure can relate trying to juggle two little ones close to age while carrying on a conversation with another adult!!!

I laughed at the end of the video when she says "I'm sorry, what was the question?"

She seems so much more like a regular mom with regular kids in that video.

    :iagree:
