Thanks! This is the second vote for Belhaven! -
Small Christian Colleges with Classical Ballet Major
pmeilaen replied to pmeilaen's topic in The College Board
This is very valuable information for my daughter. We were not aware of this and I don't think my daughter would care for the new design of the program. Thanks so much for sharing and thanks for asking your daughter. We will take a look at the Belhaven link. The Ballet Talk forum is also a good idea! Thanks again! -

I guess Texas is quite far for us (we are in Western NY), but I will mention it to her. Thanks for pointing it out. -

Fastest/Shortest Algebra II Program
pmeilaen replied to pmeilaen's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thanks! I have looked at his program for my son a few years ago, but I could also show it to my daughter. -
I was wondering if anybody here has a son or daughter at a small Christian college that offers a major in dance (classical ballet). I am aware of the best colleges that offer such a degree, but was interested also in smaller places. It is much harder to find information on those. Any help is appreciated.

Fastest/Shortest Algebra II Program
pmeilaen replied to pmeilaen's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
She does not need so much repetition, she actually hates it. I showed her the newest version of Teaching Textbooks, but she did not like their explanations. I have never seen the original edition. This is her last year of school, she does want to go to college, but does not like math. She got a pretty good SAT score, but I do need to show that she has done three years of math and not just two. -
Fastest/Shortest Algebra II Program
pmeilaen replied to pmeilaen's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Our local college only offers "Abstract Algebra." We do not have a community college close by. How many pages does Lial's have? -
I am looking for the fastest and shortest Algebra II program for my daughter who has finished the Harold Jacob's books Algebra and Geometry. We are running out of time to finish Algebra II. Any suggestions?

AP Lit vs. Center For Lit course
pmeilaen replied to kirag714's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Very true. My son took several college classes as a high schooler here in NY, but his current college in PA did not accept all of them. They told us that their approach in certain subjects was unique and he had to take the courses his college offers. -
AP Lit vs. Center For Lit course
pmeilaen replied to kirag714's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I think the reason why some people think it is not structured enough is the approach of these classes: These are Socratic discussions. Some people really like this approach and learn a lot, while other people are better suited for a different approach. -
Reading in a 2nd language with dyslexia
pmeilaen replied to 4KookieKids's topic in Bilingual Education Board
My children are all growing up bilingually (English/German) and they all learned to read German first because it is easier to do so. My youngest has some learning issues, due to a rare genetic disorder. Some of these issues are similar to dyslexia. I am practicing reading with her in both languages and I do think it is helpful. She is not reading at grade level, she is officially a third grader, but is reading at a first/early second grade level in German and second grade level in English. Since German has simple phonetic rules, it is actually a boost to a child with reading issues to learn to read German. Chidlren can experience success faster in that language than in English. I think it would be hard if you tried French, for example, because it has also a complicated phonetic system. We really like these reading booklets to make slow, but steady progress in German. -
Getting Started With Spanish Pacing
pmeilaen replied to Juliegmom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I have not used GSWS, but I did use GSWL. I do not think the Latin book is high school level at all. I have used it for grade 4 or 5. -

Government Curriculum for Interested Student?
pmeilaen replied to rutamattatt's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Maybe Declaration Statemsmanship? We do half a semester economics and half a semester government/civics. Hillsdale also offers free online courses, but they are more on the conservative side. -
Questions about how to count Dual Enrollment
pmeilaen replied to BusyMom5's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My son took several 3-hour credit college courses and I counted them as 1 high school credit each. Many colleges have restrictions on how many credits you can take as a high schooler and also on what kind of level you can take. Also, some colleges will not accept credits from other colleges, as my son found out. I think I would take a look at the colleges your daughter is interested in and see what the requirements are for homeschoolers/freshmen. You could also ask admissions at those colleges and see what they think. -
Any music theory advice

Do you have a college close by? Many colleges offer a course like this to high schoolers for a modest fee. Also, check out this online class. -
AP Lit vs. Center For Lit course
pmeilaen replied to kirag714's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My son took several classes with Center for Lit and really benefited from them. He is not someone who picks up a book of fiction by himself. Those classes made him read and the online discussions were very good for him. He loves to discuss things! He even "met" his roommate in one of the classes: They ended up sharing a room as freshmen in college because they both happened to find themselves at the same college. He did not always agree with certain interpretations of the books they had to read and continued discussing his ideas with Adam Andrews "after class-time" via e-mail. Adam Andrews still remembers my son fondly. Right now my high-school daughter is taking a class and is also learning a lot (although she does not like to discuss things so much). They used to offer cheap or free summer classes. That would be a wonderful way to find out if your daughter likes this method of teaching or not. By the way, my children have not done any AP courses so far, in fact, my husband, a college professor, finds them utterly useless and not really beneficial for preparing a child for deeper thinking and writing skills. -

Maybe Guest Hollow's physical science suggestions will help you to find some good labs.
