  1. My 3yo does the Core Knowledge PreK book only because she wants her own work and the activity books are very open-and-go. My older two did not do anything formal and didn't suffer because of it.

I love the Core knowledge stuff. Simple, complete, cheap. My little man loves having something for him to do like the big kids. I don't bother with handwriting or anything since it seems to work itself out...and he is my only leftie.

  2. Two of our 3 were simple one phase cases. A third was very complicated, two phase, crossbite, congenitally missing teeth, extractions, expander, exposures... Easily $20K by the time all is said and done (thankful for very good insurance, else we could not afford it). However, what we did do averted the need for jaw reconstruction.

So yeah, some cases are tougher than others. But I am also raising an eyebrow at how often I hear that 8 year olds with apparently basic cases are going in for two phase treatments.

Yes! In some case treating early is the only option. If an expansion is needed the window on doing that closes and then you are stuck.

  3. We pay $6500ish for braces and it doesn't matter how many appliances they out in the mouth. An overbite is not about looks. If the front teeth are not aligned then the back teeth aren't and the molars will wear wrong and the teeth will crack and become compromised down the road. I cringe when I hear people talk about it being just for looks. Orthodontics is about alignment and care for teeth. Looking great is the happy side effect of your teeth being aligned. Once the wisdom teeth move in it will get worse if it isn't taken care of. My younger DD has had 4 baby teeth extracted because in the xrays you can clearly see that the permanent teeth are turning in the gums due to crowding. Now that that is done the change has been remarkable. Fun? no Expensive? yes Worth it to think that as an adult they will look great? Absolutely

  4. Bravewriter.

New Pope. Old Pope. Meh. Don't care.

    Ex-Catholic.

I am totally over religious people getting their knickers in a twist when they hear non-religious people giving their (uncensored) thoughts.

    If it offends, don't read...

Coursera is a great free resource for high school.

But...but we are wrong. If you are a kind and just person I don't care if you worship a rock. If you are a judging, defensive, and vindictive person who cannot accept other viewpoints then you are...well you know. Having been raised in a church I can recite most of the service, Rite 1 and 2, and I can say with all honesty that chanting something like the nicene creed literally makes my skin crawl. I seriously have gone over and over it in my mind and it feels so empty and brainwashy. I feel bad for my parents who are life long servants of the church. Now have really gotten the short end of the deal in their parish with the running off a very good priest and the insertion of a nasty s.o.b. Money talks there just like anywhere else. Who else can front the money for a new $100K organ? Old money-but with it comes long strings. So corrupt under the pretense of good.

  5. I don't have experience with either but I've heard good things about Bravewriter. I wish I had the money to try IEW because I have a dyslexic 13 year old that is clueless when it comes to writing. Sonlight LA is not working. :/

I have Student Writing Intensive A that you can have for $50 shipped. Might work well. I had my DS son do it when he was in 5th and he hated to write but learned a lot. I am not using it so I need to unload.
