I said you have to respect that religion gives comfort to many people and they wholeheartedly believe it and it's not right to make fun of them for that.
That is the viewpoint I take with my kids EXCEPT when they hide behind it to be bigots or whatever. Be decent, be open, be accepting.....but check the judgement of things like being gay at the door.

I have to say that I was a bit excited about the Omnibus online classes....and then I looked at the samples. No way around the biblical stuff. I had high hopes of using them to supplement but they literally focus on the books of the bible and not history in my opinion. Dang! Also, we are doing VP here to supplement and the kids have learned a lot and god is not shoved down your throat.

aaack! That link has since expired! DO we know if/when it will be up? My DS would love to match these up with SOTW

That was absolutely beautiful and I am thankful for you sharing your story with me. :grouphug:

I feel old. Hold on to your hats ladies...I will be married 22 years on June 22. And......we got married in a you-know-what church. What was I thinking? But DH used to be catholic and since his mom dies so many years ago, and church was her thing, I went along. Well of course he no longer goes so that has fallen to the wayside. But in spite of a strange start we have been smashingly happy for this long so the goddess must be watching over us anyhow!

Well I thought this day was blown even though I had a candle going with a peace enchantment....but I guess I wasn't specific in the kind of peace I wanted but I will take what I got ;-)

I got it for my DD but she is not into that format so I am saving it for my DS who will love it. Mine is good with just TT for now. She wants it to be over as fast as she can.

Celebrating a beautiful homeschool day with red wine........

I'm disagreeing that sugar and artificial coloring cause hyperactivity. I also thought you were saying caffeine wouldn't help, so I apologize for that misunderstanding.

The research on food dyes and other additives is incomplete, but at best it is likely they exaggerate behavioral symptoms, not cause them.
In spite of the sugar and additives, drinks with caffeine can help people with ADHD to focus properly, though it's nowhere near as effective as ADHD meds.
OP, giving dd her meds probably is the best way to go because they don't have the massive amounts of sugar or hfcs. Despite my defense of using caffeine drinks, I do agree with genscharm that all the extras in the drinks aren't the best option. I'm glad you found the connection and got her meds again. I know firsthand how difficult it is to find the right treatment for a kid with ADHD.
I have to say that I am strongly against food coloring, especially Red 40. It makes my son NUTS and he literally cannot read a sentence. Since I took it out of his diet things are good. Aggression was a HUGE issue as well.

What about tea? That caffeine hypes me up more than coffee. As for energy drinks...they are controversial but Red Bull does come in a sugar free version. Also the ice tea one from Monster tastes really good. Having said that-they are potent and I would split a can of monster into 3 servings and never give her a whole can.

I think all the above ideas are great. Sorry about your mom. Maybe she needs a bit of time to absorb the news and then will be more open about what she needs. Perhaps look for things that will make her life easier...perhaps her Dr would have some input?

Hey what do you guys suggest for a planner? I love the Well planned day but of course it is covered in scripture quotes. Any idea?

I would avoid Johnny tremain with younger kids as it is a tough dry read for older students.

My library has 79 of the DVDs! 47 of the CDs. Wow I think I need to get over there

I'm thinking he can buy me something and give his sweetie the night off from cooking. That's what I think!

Guesthollow has free American history you can pull from. I know it is religious, but mine are using Veritas self-paced this year for modern and it is not time consuming and easy to do. You could sign up for that and then supplement with other stuff. It is not a deep study of American history but it gets the general points across.

I'd love to know the name of it! I have a couple of college level texts that are written in a somewhat narrative style, those plus the Elemental history might be just the ticket. I love the way the science is laid out, and it is easy for me to make notes on both his printouts and mine with additional reading, web links or documentaries.
I'm thinking it was a Glencoe text.....

I posted this on the Gen Ed board, but thought I'd ask here too. We are doing Elemental Science Logic Biology and love it. DS needs a non boring crash course in American History and Civics....any thoughts on their History program but beefed up with original source readings and documentaries?
Is there anything set up like their programs, but more age appropriate for beginning logic stage? He is a fluent but somewhat slow reader, has a high level of comprehension and synthesis of information, but written output is still lagging behind.
Perhaps grab a good text from Amazon and pull out what you need? I know my HS son has one that he used that had original sources quoted in it. Actually I have a book about using original sources I could dig up for you.

I am torn. If you can identify the parts of speech then why diagram? It also burns my butt that they all conveniently use a different method of laying out the sentence. Could we please get a standard format???

What a second... who said Christians don't like to party and drink. Someone is getting their information really wrong there. :)
I was thinking more of the excess and behaviors that accompany it being not so religious :cheers2:

I have to laugh at the seemingly non-christian nature of the current mardi gras celebrations. Out of control drinking and parties anyone???
-
Is Mardi Gras a pagan thing that was worked in by the christian church? Much like christmas being on Dec 25th? I'm curious

I personally prefer cookies over cupcakes-more portable and flexible. Plus you can make them in a cauldron. :drool5:

Hmmmm... I thought that was mentioned in the handbook they give out when you have a baby. In the section right after back talk and sassiness.

Yes I prefer to know where I stand with people instead of wondering if they really care or if they are using me.
