  1. There is a community on Fire Island where it is illegal to walk around with straws or disposable cups. I believe if people can't be trusted to do what is obviously better for the earth then they need to be told. They tell us what lanes we can drive in during rush hour, whether or not we can hold phones while driving, and even if we can be out after dark as a teen in some places. Why not limit an environmental hazard that has other options? Aldi is a fine example of cutting down the fluff to offer lower prices. No fancy shelves and no bags. Pass on the savings and you will get results.

  2. I also have an irrational hang up about the reusable bags. Many stores have been more encouraging about it, but for a long time stores were very anti bringing bags from the outside in. The whole "we reserve the right to inspect your bags" thing. I hate going in there with a bunch of bags and wondering if someone is going to inspect my bags. I know, silly!

This is why I love Giant near me. Grab the hand scanner, scan and bag as I go, and whisk through checkout. I get the bags packed the way I like and they even give me 5 cents per reusable bag! and gas points!

  3. It sure seems like common sense is prevailing less and less every year. I honestly think part of that is because the government has been legislating things that shouldn't be in their sphere of influence. Of course, a lot of that was brought on by frivolous lawsuits, lol.

Oh you mean like the big WARNING your hot coffee might really be hot label on the McDonald's cups??? People are lazy and ridiculous a lot of the time and want everything for nothing. We need a nanny state to babysit all the irresponsible people.

  4. Yep. I am not bringing cloth or reusable bags to the grocery store. I just can't be bothered to remember to do that and to have to wash them, etc. If stores want to stop using plastic and go back to paper bags-- fine. I can certainly buy my own plastic bags for use at home. If stores want to charge me $.05 for each plastic bag-- go for it. I will just add it to the cost of my groceries. I honestly don't care how they handle this as long as there is some option for me to get my groceries home.

So is it also a hassle to carpool, conserve energy, or do anything else that saves the earth? I don't get that attitude from someone who takes such a huge inconvenience as homeschooling onto their shoulders. You use them, wash them once every few weeks, put them in your trunk. Hard?

  5. Common sense does not prevail and if it did we would be in good shape. If you don't recycle then don't use plastic and glass. If you have no money don't keep having kids. If you are on food stamps don't spend them at 7-11....and the list goes on. We are a nation of entitlement. No one should have to tell anyone how to behave responsibly and do right by their families(not short term unexpected issues). I use recyclable bags until I need some to gather recycling in. I gather any cans or bottles in them, take them out and put them in the big blue bag. I can carry double the amount in reusable bags so why use anything else! PLUS I made some really lovely ones out of old curtain material and it is way stronger than the ones you buy in the store.

  6. Personally, with a tree-nut allergic kiddo as an intended recipient, I would not use a different tree nut flour or butter or milk, absolutely no way. My only possible exception would be coconut flour - while it is technically a tree nut, my understanding is that many tree-nut-allergic people do not react to coconut (like peanut is technically a legume but most peanut allergy people do not react to peas). I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because I have a kiddo allergic to tree nuts but not coconut, and we are about to do a dairy-free trial if I succeed in getting him to drink a protein shake with rice protein and coconut milk when I get home this afternoon...

If there is no way the allergic kid would be eating the recipe result, then I might consider, depending on specifics.

Oh no one in the house but me would be eating it. My tree nut allergies can eat almond so I am not worried about the flour. I did get sunbutter to try in the bread instead and if it flops I will try almond butter.

  7. Okay I am going to try to avoid potato starch first. I am hoping that flax or that will be the answer since I just bought packs of namaste muffin mix on amazon. I hate to bring cashew butter into the house since I have 2 that are deathly allergic to cashews. Do you think I could sub almond butter for that????

  8.

Does it have a lot of flax in it? Flax meal upsets my stomach sometimes.

Flax is an ingredient. I guess I need to play around with it and see. I don't normally eat bread anyway but it is nice to have toast once in a while!

  9. I know it stinks but when the economy tanked a few years ago my DH took a huge pay cut because he did not receive any bonus for 2 years. That amounts to 6 figures in pay lost over 2 years. It really stunk but there was no one to complain to or about. We just had to deal. Hopefully the hill will get its act together and figure out this mess.

  10. And I don't think he should be allowed near the communion wine. Something tells me he's an unpleasant drunk.

But where will they put the litter box? And who will deal with the sacred kitty "expulsions"

They could auction them off the finance all the cat doors that will need to be installed

  11. Get a load of this Christian school fires pregnant woman for engaging in premarital sex. So guess everyone who works there has to sign a morality clause that says they won't engage in a bunch of behaviors including premarital relations. At first I'm thinking this woman is out of luck since she signed it. Then we get to the clincher- school offers her job to this woman's fiance! Who also engaged in relations hence the baby!!

Yet they do not see the double standard that sooooooo many xtian churches/faiths hold and cling to. The catholic church takes women back centuries........

  12. I am going to look closely at it! Thanks! One of my "aha!" moments from my Lenten studies this year was I should make an effort once ina while to experience what the poor experience, so i can understand better. Suggestions included using public transportation only for a week, or using just one car, or not using any credit cards for a month, and such. This looks like it might fit the bill.

My kids would think using the public bus as a treat! Even walking to the grocery store would be fun in their book!
