    https://class.course...ution-002/class

(Hopefully that link works, but if it doesn't, Genetics and Evolution should be near the top of the Coursera class list.)

A lot of it is based on Jerry Coyne's 'Why Evolution is True' and includes an interview with him. I believe you can enrol in a course that has already started, so you needn't wait.

For these courses do you have to do the tests and such? I would just like to follow along

  2. Thank you for sharing that article. I have also been reading Weapons of Mass Instruction and since our government knows that No Child Left Behind isn't working and hasn't worked in 10 years who is benefitting from the policy? Why isn't President Obama talking about this? This is our future!

This is a topic that infuriates me. I can't believe that the American public educational system wasn't one of the top issues during the recent campaign.

Because there is no big money backing education. Money runs the country.

  3. The more I look at pics of molluscum the more I think that he has it. I put small pieces of duct tape over each bump to prevent spreading and to "pull" the center out when I take them off. I found it as a treatment suggestion to get the infectious part out without messing with the actual pimple. Hopefully that will work.

  4. My 4 year old gets these small pimple-like bumps on his skin. First they appear as a white head(but the size of a chicken pox bump) then the center gets hard and pointed. If scratched out the bump bleeds and then dries up. Mostly on the left side of his torso and on his arm. He does have a few on his right arm. They don't seem to itch really. Any ideas???

  5. My extended family has owned a lot of nissan Altimas and have loved them all. We just got a 2013 for DH and gave DS his 2006 with 130,000 miles on it. No work has ever been needed but general maintenance. Really great cars and roomy for a smaller car. My sister has 2012 civic and the reviews were correct. Very cheap feeling and nothing like my van in quality. They really messed up there. Although safe Volvos are $$ to fix and for the past few years were not made by the original company as it was sold. I would check that out before buying one past like 2010.

  6. I really like MFW or Heart of Dakota for the box-checking mentality. (I have not used HOD but am looking at it for next year. I have used MFW and like it, but don't care for their LA suggestions or science)

If you are looking for something more secular, maybe Easy Classical or Living Books curriculum? I think they both have Bible schedules that you just exclude if you wanted to. Memoria Press looks good as well. I would probably use MP, but I think it's a little too much for my daughter. Have you looked at Cathy Duffy's reviews to see what she suggests for the "open & go" type format?

Yes I looked at the literature and it is going to be too much for my reluctant reading 7th grader unless I can get the audio books.

  7. I'm not sure if the OP is still reading, but as a OCD boxchecker, I like the 1st edition (early 1990s) What Your _ Grader Needs to Know series.

And...I think...I'm finally settling into WRTR 4th editon for phonics, for better and for worse. I've completed most of many of the Spalding clones and have now entirely completed a WRTR 4th notebook. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but WRTR 4th is the most field tested and fine tuned, by one author. There are reasons why I actually FINISHED WRTR 4th.

I need my curricula to have rock solid organization. I can tolerate and merely frown and moan over yucky frosting, but lose my mind over faulty structure and organization. I also cannot tolerate bloated curricula that cannot be completed in a reasonable amount of time, or needs me to special order or to hunt down unexpected pieces.

Yes I am following still! What do you mean by using the Core Knowledge books to box check? I rebought all of them in the older addition after I followed your monster thread :bored: and have no clue what I am doing with them. I really like Phonics Road but think I like the format of McRuffy for my 6 year old. He likes workbooks but the songs from PR are really working for him to remember the rules since he learns best through his ears.

  8. No, you don't NEED one.

I have a very organized house, everything has its place - and I have never owned, nor coveted, a label maker.

Then I guess I do since my house is completely unorganized! I got one at Staples and bought the one that uses the less expensive tape. I can see where it can get ridiculous. They even had it for 9.99 (instant savings of $20! Woot)

  9. I am frustrated that people seem more interested in getting to the bottom of the motive and digging out all the gory details than working on a solution. What does it matter really? He's dead. Sadly the memory of the victims will fall far shorert in people's minds than the shooter who continues to almost be ....what's the word? Idolized.no. Romanticized..no. What word am I looking for ladies? I haven't had much coffee yet.

  10. I was very well aware that fertility lessens after 35. It's why dh and I started TTC the moment we were married even though no one but our witnesses and my oldest knew we were married. We were planning a "big" wedding months later, we had a small ceremony to make it legal since dd and I were moving in with dh. Since I had heard all the time that after 30 it takes on average a year of trying to conceive, with the time going up after that, we just went right to it. And ds was conceived 2 weeks after the wedding that no one knew about. We ended up telling our families about the pregnancy and that we were married already at the same time.

Same with dd. Even though I was 37 when we started trying for her, I was pregnant within 2 months. At my ultrasound, I was told I had the ovaries of a much younger woman. :tongue_smilie:

Old age ups the risks but doesn't guarantee difficulty conceiving.

Yes- I had kids at 26, 29, 30, 35, 37, 39. I tried one time for all but the 3rd, 5th, and 6th who were happy surprises, In my case age had no effect. Also married at 22.
