Grammar and spelling in 1st/2nd grade
OneRoomHomeSchool replied to Emmy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
For my current first grader, I did not do spelling or grammar at all until just these past few weeks, but rather, focused on just phonics, reading and handwriting. (I am very glad I did this!) There is nothing inherently wrong with not doing grammar, spelling, etc...this young. My son will be 7 next month, is over halfway down with grade 1, and I felt that for *us* we are just now ready to add those things, and so we have. He is now on lesson 3 of FLL and read to begin list 1 in SWO A :001_smile: -
If it's working...do not fix it. :001_smile:

Has ANYONE just followed WTM ........?
OneRoomHomeSchool replied to Jeana's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Since my logic (12 & 11) and almost logic (9) stage kids have come home for school (my 6 and 4 yr olds have always been 'home') I am getting closer and closer to using the WTM and plan to stay with it for the most part. What we deviate from, mainly is Science. We don't do science on the cycles here. I also have to improvise in order to meet each child *where* he/she is at. For example my 9 year old (almost 10) is no where near ready for 5th grade work. She is not doing Latin or the writing kids her age would do, she is just not ready. At this point we don't really do Art as laid out in WTM either. We just do free art. They have the time, space and materials to be creative. Everything else, we are getting there...slowly, adding in what we can and when. :001_smile: -
Happy Birthday Lisawa!!
OneRoomHomeSchool replied to Tina in WA's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yes, Happy Birthday, Dear Lisa!! :grouphug: -
Same here! My ds6 and dd9 are just beginning their recorder lessons. I think that if you took the time to learn recorder yourself, you could teach it very efficiently. I am a fairly advanced flutist. My oldest dd also took 1 year of flute in school band, so I am just furthering her. ds 11 has no inclination to learn music, at this point, with him, I am not pushing it either. Next year we plan to buy a piano and myself and oldest dd will take lessons. Anyway, I really recommend beginning with recorder. It will be easy for YOU to learn so that you can better teach them. Brittney, same thing happened here! Remember *me* raving about Queen? Well we dropped it. I am doing FLL 1 with my ds6 and FLL 3 with my dd 9, and we love it. I *really* like FLL 3, it is awesome! I am having no problem fitting it in, even with 5 kids. In fact *I* teach the FLL 1 and 3 with those 2 kids, Latin to the 2 olders using whiteboard and notebooks, OPG to Reading, Read Science to my ds6, teach 3 levels of new math concepts daily, give assignments for the older 3 in literature/reading, science, etc... a story everyday to my ds4 and we are still done by noon. We do history/Bible in the afternoon as a family. You can do it! It took me about 3 weeks to get our 'routine' down pat, and for the kids to be 'trained' for our school time. it's working great. :D
