  1. A big dish of oven roasted veggies and a pot of rice. Sweet potatoes have been running ~28c a pound around here. I grab produce on the markdown cart when I see it. Pick up a rosemary plant on markdown after Christmas and plant it for many years of yummy seasoning!
  2. Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. He was the former head of the Human Genome Project.
  3. I agree about many of the titles already listed, so I'll add two of mine. * Imitation of Life * Madame X
  4. I've been looking at this, but it's gone now. Is there any reason to spend more to get the refurbed iPad 2 if I'm going to splurge on something like this at all? If these come back in stock again, that would be a nice deal, and it appears as though I could do away with printing for quite awhile.
  5. Bumping this up today, as I've been working with Kool-Aid dye this afternoon.... Kool-Aid has a flavor called Pina-Pineapple which gives a beautiful yellow-gold hue to the silks. I dipped mine in orange first, then left it in the pineapple liquid for several minutes, and it came out beautifully! I didn't care much for the purple that comes from the grape flavor though. The pineapple flavor smells yummy!
  6. :iagree: I have been on the other end of the stick, so to speak. It never dawned on me at the time to ask for help from others, especially for gifts at Christmas. If I didn't have it to spend, then we didn't get it. Our happiness at holiday time was not dependent upon whatever material "things" we had. If I could have asked for one thing, it would have been for help with buying propane for heating for the upcoming winter. I would never in my wildest imagination have asked others for anything I would have day-dreamed for. I would have realized that I didn't really need it at that time. There were other much more pressing needs. I say this having lived off of soup and cereal for several months at a time during a very lean period of my life. Do I think I missed out on anything by not having had a few "nice" Christmas gifts? No, of course not. I'm probably a better person for having gone through a season of poverty. I'm very thankful that my life has changed (financially) for the better, but I can definitely say that I have walked a mile in others shoes for a time. It just seems that today's attitude seems to be that getting some wanted material goods (at Christmas) will make it all better. It does not. Before you throw tomatoes at me, I've bought for Angel Trees, and contributed to other organizations who help the needy around here. I have decided to stop for now, as there is so much abuse of the system here. I feel that giving happens when my heart either "hears" or "sees" a need, and that isn't always at Christmas. There are too many other days in the year when people have real needs. I'm not too sure anyway that all the commercialization of Christmas is what the holiday was meant for. Editing to add... If you want to give during the Christmas season, check with a local nursing home or home health agency.
  7. I ordered two books by Jim Weise, Detective Science, and Spy Science. After looking through them yesterday, I'm not too sure if they are what I had in mind. I would like to assemble a kind of detective/spy kit, and I thought these two books would be just the thing as a kind of *spine* to work with, but I'm not bowled over by them. Any thoughts on books about spies, detective work, etc.? I don't think Amazon takes returns on books, so I guess I'm stuck with these.
  8. Yup, me too. ;) I can't remember the name of the episode, but a favorite is the one in which people are dropped off of a train (?) at a town in which there are no people. All the homes are empty--churches, stores, etc.--all empty.
  9. We have loved the Little House books so far. Farmer Boy has been a definite favorite, but boy, does that book make you hungry! Almonzo's mother must have been a fantastic cook!
  10. Wow! You all have such good ideas. I love the dishes too. Do you think I could dip some of the cones in chocolate and that they would keep okay until Christmas if I do them a couple of days before? I'm thinking I could put them in a seal-type bag with a sealer. Think that would work? I guess I could even dip the cones into the sprinkles too. I just don't know how long they stay fresh that way (out of the box, I mean).
  11. I found the Ben and Jerry's book at bookcloseouts on sale, so I'm hoping that will be good for starters. Adding an ice cream scoop to the list (wasn't on there before ).
  12. :confused1: Ruh, roh. I forgot about that. Thanks for all the great ideas. There are no nut allergies, so those would be great.
  13. Dharma Trading has some you can order, but you'd have to dye them yourself. I've read that Kool-aid works for this. Could be a cheap option for you.
  14. I ordered the Cuisinart ice cream maker for DD, and I'd like to assemble a box of goodies to go along with it. I've been looking around for some cute ice cream dishes, but haven't found any yet. I'm thinking of some things like: *mini-chocolate chips *toffee bits *chocolate jimmies and colored sprinkles Any thing else?
  15. Would one of those wool jackets from Chadwick's work for this? I saw a couple of those at the thrift shop, and for a $1, this would be a great re-purposing of them.
  16. Dredging up this older post of mine.... We're still working on infinitives right now. I am teaching the infinitive as usually the direct object of the verb, then the latter part of the infinitive phrase as the modifier of the infinitive. Is this too confusing for this level (2nd grade workbook)? Ex: Bobtail began to nibble the greenest leaves. We would mark this as Bobtail began to nibble the greenest leaves. So, we would mark subject, verb, infinitive (functioning as d.o. to began), adj., adj. direct object (of inf.). Am I doing this correctly, or should I include the infinitive as part of the verb phrase for now?
  17. We loved the National Gallery of Art too. There was a nice cafeteria onsite, but we didn't eat there, so I have no idea of the selections or prices. If you have the chance to get over to Georgetown, (we just walked), go to Sprinkles for a fantastic cupcake. Much better than DC Cupcakes, and a minimal wait, too. Cupcakes are ~$3.50, and the flavors are yummy! Look for Julia Child's kitchen at the Smithsonian. We really loved this. The inaugural gown display was amazing too. Not sure your ds would like it as much, but you surely will. Be prepared for spending $$ for food, unless you can find some cheap eateries. We paid ~$25 one evening for just two burgers, an order of fries and sodas from a popular burger joint close to the hill. If you find yourselves close to Union Station, there is a food court with lots of options, some of them not so expensive. Whatever you do, have fun!
  18. We have been using it on and off as time allows over the last year or so. Recently I decided to add it back into our schedule, but we will (hopefully) cover a week's worth of lessons on Fridays. I can't see that as a problem, as it will be the only math we cover on Friday. I frequently have CSMP requested, but haven't been able to work it in to our days. Maybe covering it on Fridays will work out better for us. On some of the older posts which were linked, I described how I made the mini-computers, negative number stones, and magnetic attribute blocks.
