  1. "They" are going to have to drag me kicking and screaming to a school to enroll my kids :) My kids have said, repeatedly, they do not want to go to (or back dd was in ps for a bit) to ps. I ask them every year and we talk about pro's and con's and still the refuse! So it isn't just me committed, it is my kids too! :grouphug::grouphug:
  2. :hurray: I just joined that group! I haven't been accepted yet though :tongue_smilie: Thank you for sharing! :grouphug::grouphug:
  3. Are you all using the full program or just the grammar? I want to use the grammar, language, practice, poetry etc... Thanks!
  4. supplement the writing portion? Is it comprehensive? I am looking at WWE and/or IEW. I want to be thorough but not overwhelmed. TY! :grouphug::grouphug:
  5. Is there anywhere else to but it (perhaps cheaper) than the main MCT website? I can't seem to find it used :glare: (hmmm wonder why??:tongue_smilie:) no one wants to part with it! Thanks ladies...and gents! :grouphug::grouphug:
  6. ok you two and Mrs. Mungo (sp?) are fast becoming my favorite people! :grouphug::grouphug:
  7. I chose Saxon, the poll didn't specify new soooo :) You can get Saxon used for under $50 and it's my fav! :grouphug::grouphug:
  8. So is it safe to say them you can use WWE without the workbooks?
  9. What is your favorite writing program and why? What makes you like it?
  10. Has anyone used any of his stuff? I have heard it is good. I am looking for something to teach technique. Like blending, shading, painting, watercolor, pastels, lines etc... Any info on Barry Stebbing and/or any suggestions on a good art curriculum?
  11. I am a Saxon fan as well! We used BJU (daughter didn't like it) then tried Saxon. *I* like Saxon. That said my daughter wasn't to crazy about it, however, it was because she wanted a workbook. She didn't like having to write the problems out. So...we went to A Beka. A Beka isn't bad, I can't say I don't like it, but I do like Saxon better. The same for my younger in 2nd. I like the incremental approach for the younger grades. A Beka doesn't practice enough for me. So we are finishing 6th and 2nd in A Beka then going back to Saxon for Alg 1/2 and 3rd! :grouphug::grouphug:
  12. WoW!!! Excellent, Love it! I am going to be up until o'dark thurty now! tyvm :tongue_smilie: :grouphug::grouphug:
  13. I would look for the IG used and use the library. Or try to find the complete core used. You can look here in the for sale forum, vegsorce, homeschoolclassifieds.com and ebay...to name a few. Sonlight has their own used board as well. Yahoo groups too :) Plenty of places out there!! :grouphug::grouphug:
  14. Ok I picked this one just because it was short and sweet. I have read this one before and it is one of the poems in the one book of poetry we have. (For the previous poster, my kids have read more poetry than in that one book, we only own one book :D) This is the kids of poetry that irks me...I can't explain why. I just don't like it. As many have posted I can see how studying poetry would be good for critical thinking and digging deeper. However I would rather do it other ways that I can't think of right now. My husband likes poetry, but I told him to please never spout poetry to me. I am not going to faint or go googly eyed :tongue_smilie: I have tried to read some of the poems you guys have posted but I just can't read them all. Perhaps it is a mental block? I dunno. I appreciate all the responses and I do understand why a lot of you want to study it. If y'all were closer maybe we could do a co-op and you could teach my kids about it! :001_smile: As for me? Nah...if it comes up in out Language Arts or anything else we shall but otherwise.....:001_smile:
  15. Don't know if this will help but I am using WS right now and it is so-so for us. I tried using WS 2 with my 2nd grader. Is was like wading through concrete that has set. I am using WS 3 with my 6th grader and she seems to be doing ok. I think I may try to find another writing program but haven't looked yet. I need a program that holds my hand because I am not a strong writer at all.
  16. Or you could just make this cake... http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Too-Much-Chocolate-Cake/Detail.aspx and not have to worry about it at all! :D BTDT many times and even without frosting!
  17. :iagree: :D See now some of Shakespeare I like. Like Hamlet, I like Hamlet. However I have never considered it poetry I considered it a play. I can understand it just my reading it. I don't have to "read between the lines". I have exposed my kids to it, we have 1 book on poetry, I told my daughter to read and see what she thinks. She read it once and put it down. Perhaps I should qualify what I mean by poetry. I mean that stuff that you have to read, re-read, re-read again, maybe understand maybe not. :confused:You have to really analyze it to know what they are talking about and even then you may not know what they are talking about.:confused:That's what I mean. I read Psalms...love Psalms. I know that is a form of poetry. I love music again another form as well. "Footprints in the Sand" is may favorite all time poem, if indeed it is a poem. I just like to be able to rad something and get it, I don't want flowery fluff around it and have to guess. :glare: If there is poetry in our curriculum I will teach it but I am not going to actively seek it out.:tongue_smilie:
  18. I can't stand about 99% of poetry out there. Never have and never will. I have a very, very, very difficult time even reading it to my kids let alone discussing it. None of it makes any sense to me. I mean none. And some of he "poems" the call poems sound like something my 7yo could have written. So am I missing something here? Or is there really a good reason to teach poetry? :grouphug::grouphug:
  19. I am using LLATL for my two. They love it and can't wait to do more. However I keep hearing the rave reviews about MCT and wondering, pondering and looking. Can these two programs be used together...perhaps on rotation? Has anyone gone from LLATL to MCT..if so what is the difference? I have been to the website and looked, it looks good but...well I can't really tell! Thank you! :grouphug::grouphug:
  20. :iagree: I don't use actual boxes I use file folders. I have absolutely nowhere to put a workbox station and start up was too expensive for me. So I bought one box on file folders and use those. Let me know fi you want more info on it :) It isn't fancy but it is functional. I also second the fun stations. That can be great "busy work". :grouphug::grouphug:
  21. I am a big baby...you wouldn't think I had three kids (with no epidural, getting an epidural scared me more than labor! Although I did have morphine with one and demerol with one and the last one there wasn't time for drugs...he wanted out too fast! :001_smile:). BUT I wouldn't get it without. I had filling when I was a kid and the dr always gave me novocaine. Had to have 2 shots worth because of tolerence to the drug but I did it! Gads my jaw is clenching and my teeth are grinding thinking about it! Give me the heebs!
  22. I have been trying and trying to find a system to give my kids incentive but without being too complicated. I don't have money to go out and buy things for them to "work up" to getting those items. I don't want to always use food as an incentive..I think (I could be wrong but) it can lead to food issues later on. I read in another post here in WTM somewhere :001_smile: that a mom (I forget which on of you it was sorry!) used beans. The kids earned beans and "bought" things to do. I really, really like this, the kids do too when I presented the but I just can't think of what they can "buy" with the exception of a few things. They buy game time..that means nintento/computer game time. They buy special snacks like a fun size package of M&M's and bubble gum. I also have these pencils called Smencils (The have scents and are made out of recycled newspaper...really cool!). But that is about it. That can get boring after 3 weeks and they have become disenchanted with the beans. So any suggestions??:bigear: Something I can rotate maybe or something? Oh and it can't cost and arm and a leg...already have promised those to the landlord, electric, phone and garbage service :glare: :grouphug::grouphug:
  23. Have you tried looking for an American Heritage Girls troop in your area? My daughter is in AHG here and really likes it. It is similar to GS in they have badges, learn things, field trips and the like but it's spine is biblically based. www.ahg.org is the HQ website to search for a troop if your interested in it :001_smile: Oh there are no cookie sales...or sales competition of any kind that I have seen in AHG too. That was one of the reasons (among others) I like my daughter in AHG as opposed to GS. :grouphug::grouphug:
